  • Patent number: 7330430
Abstract: A packet-based traffic shaping system including a scheduler that forwards packets in accordance with a scheduling algorithm from queues that have at least a minimum good credit rating. The minimum good credit rating is not dependent on the size of a packet that is to be forwarded. Rate shapers associated with the queues reduce credit by transmission costs associated with the packets and restore credit incrementally over time. When a queue is empty, credit does not accumulate above an idle credit value at the associated rate shaper. When a packet is enqueued in a queue that has been idle for a period of time, the packet is forwarded without undue delay.

  • Patent number: 7330693
Abstract: A wireless system and method for providing informative broadcast services includes a plurality of base stations, each serving a plurality of wireless communications device users via a plurality of communications channels. An alert message is first transmitted to wireless communications devices advising of the availability of a broadcast message and identifying an associated communications channel. The base station then transmits the broadcast message to the plurality of users on the identified channel. The wireless communications devices may automatically switch to the broadcast channel, for example, when there is a weather or other emergency, or may offer the user the opportunity to change channels. Also, a user may initiate a request to access a broadcast channel for services such as news, sports, or stock reports on a subscription basis.

  • Patent number: 7327958
Abstract: A channel-growth plan for an optical transmission system selects channels such that the transients that result in the channels that survive a network failure, such as an upstream fiber cut, are either minimized or effectively handled by some transient-control technique. In one embodiment, the growth plan may try to keep post-transient surviving channel total power gain equal to the pre-transient total power gain. Alternatively, the growth plan may try to distribute the surviving channels uniformly over the pre-transient channel-frequency range. Other manifestations are to keep (1) the average power of the surviving channels substantially equal to the average power of the pre-transient channels or (2) the average power of the post-transient surviving channels substantially equal to the power level of a specified channel. Transient-control can be balanced with conventional low-cost and high-performance goals to provide an effective hybrid channel-growth plan.

  • Patent number: 7328220
Abstract: A method of efficiently providing estimated answers to workloads of aggregate, multi-join SQL-like queries over a number of input data-streams. The method only examines each data elements once and uses a limited amount of computer memory. The method uses join graphs and atomic sketches that are essentially pseudo-random summaries formed using random binary variables. The estimated answer is the product of all the atomic sketches for all the vertices in the query join graph. A query workload is processed efficiently by identifying and sharing atomic sketches common to distinct queries, while ensuring that the join graphs remain well formed. The method may automatically minimize either the average query error or the maximum query error over the workload.

  • Patent number: 7327037
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming an electrically and/or thermally conducting interconnection is disclosed wherein a first surface and a second surface are contacted with each other via a plurality of nanostructures disposed on at least one of the surfaces. In one embodiment, a first plurality of areas of nanostructures is disposed on a component in an electronics package such as, illustratively, a microprocessor. The first plurality of areas is then brought into contact with a corresponding second plurality of areas of nanostructures on a substrate, thus creating a strong friction bond. In another illustrative embodiment, a plurality of nanostructures is disposed on a component, such as a microprocessor, which is then brought into contact with a substrate. Intermolecular forces result in an attraction between the molecules of the nanostructures and the molecules of the substrate, thus creating a bond between the nanostructures and the substrate.

  • Patent number: 7323033
Abstract: A nanostructured substrate is disclosed having a plurality of substrate openings disposed between the nanostructures on the substrate. When a desired fluid comes into contact with the substrate, at least a portion of the fluid is allowed to pass through at least one of the openings. In a first embodiment, the fluid is caused to pass through the openings by causing the fluid to penetrate the nanostructures. In a second embodiment, the substrate is a flexible substrate so that when a mechanical force is applied to the substrate, such as a bending or stretching force, the distance between nanoposts or the diameter of nanocells on the substrate increases and the liquid penetrates the nanostructures. In another embodiment, a first fluid, such as water, is prevented from penetrating the nanostructures on the substrate while a second fluid is permitted to pass through the substrate via the openings in the substrate.

  • Patent number: 7324545
Abstract: An advance over the prior art is achieved through an efficient method to retransmit erroneous frames by identifying the users who are most likely to experience a frame error and requests retransmissions from them. Since the recovery is done by starting with the most likely, second most likely etc., the invention results in faster recovery of data. Moreover, the invention reduces the battery consumption of subsequent mobile nodes by suppressing the retransmission requests that were already made by nodes preceding it. A key element of the invention is to rank the set of receiver nodes in the order of decreasingly worse channel conditions, i.e., from worst to best. Hence, with K receiver nodes, a transmit node assigns rank 1 to a receiver node to which it has the poorest radio channel condition. Similarly, it assigns rank K to the receiver node to which it has the best radio channel condition.

  • Patent number: 7324760
Abstract: An optical RZ transmitter comprises an optical signal source and a pair of electro-optical modulators in tandem, one arranged to receive a NRZ electrical data signal and the other a clock signal at the data rate of the data signal. The phase difference between the data signal and the clock signal is controlled by adding a first dither signal to a bias signal applied to the modulator receiving the data signal, and a second dither signal, having a different frequency, to the phase difference. The amplitude of variations in the power of the optical output signal corresponding to cross-modulation of the first and second dither signals is detected and the phase difference is controlled in response to the detected amplitude.

  • Patent number: 7324808
Abstract: A method for delivering certain types of user information over a communication system is provided. Users identify certain user signals that can be transmitted in non-real time, and transmit such signals over signaling channels of the communication system. The system receives and stores these non-real time signals and transmits them over available traffic channels to their destinations at some later time. The user or the communication system defines when such non real time signals are to be transmitted over the traffic channels to their destinations. In this manner, the probability of real time signals and user identified non real time signals competing for traffic channels or other resources of the system is greatly reduced thus allowing the communication system to maintain or even increase its capacity.

  • Patent number: 7324580
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for modulating a communication signal in a CDMA environment using orthogonal N by N Hadamard spread spectrum codes. Orthogonal spreading codes are used that have lengths that are not a power-of 2 to provide additional channel variability for various multimedia applications and increase the flexibility of the number of channels/bandwidth relationship. The Hadamard codes are multiples of 4 (4n) and demonstrate a good cross-correlation property, making them very useful in the flexible design of CDMA systems. A transmitter encodes each of N data streams (N not being a power of 2), to be transmitted using a 4n codeword, Ni. The received signal is passed through a filter matched to the characteristics of the appropriate codeword, Ni, and PN spreading sequence.
