Patent number: 7013116Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the number of erred bits in the decoded signal by using a channel decoder whose transfer characteristic is matched to the transfer characteristic of the MIMO detector. This means that the curve of the transfer characteristic of the MIMO detector is 1) above the curve of the reflected transpose of the transfer characteristic of the channel decoder for about 95% of the curve, and 2) close to the reflected transpose of the curve of the transfer characteristic of the channel decoder. Particularly, an LDPCC decoder can be used as the channel decoder and can be matched to the MIMO detector by matching 1) the transfer characteristic of the LDPCC decoder's CND to 2) the transfer characteristic of a combination of the MIMO detector and the LDPCC VND. Furthermore, the LDPCC can be similarly matched to any appropriate detector in addition to or instead of the MIMO detector.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2002Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Alexei Ashikhmin, Gerhard Guenter Theodor Kramer, Stephan Ten Brink

Patent number: 7013129Abstract: Apparatus and a method for establishing a cellular mobile call. If no radio traffic (voice or data) channels are available for a calling Mobile Station (MS), then a test is made to determine the expected wait time before a channel becomes available. If the expected wait time is less than a first threshold, then the call request is queued. If a channel does not become available before a second time threshold, then the caller is notified that the call has been queued and is expected to be established in a short time. A control message is sent to the MS to trigger an indication of the queued status to the user. The indication may be one or more tones, a data display, or the playing of a pre-recorded announcement. If the expected wait time is more than the first threshold, the caller is given the opportunity to be called back when a radio channel becomes available. Advantageously, the number of failed calls because of unavailable traffic channels is reduced, and the caller's annoyance level is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2001Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Stephen C. Patent number: 7009949Abstract: A rate feedback and adaptation scheme or system uses a rate of rate feedback asymmetrical with the rate of data rate adaptation. In particular, the rate adaptation system provides a rate of rate feedback slower than the rate of rate adaptation. Thus, by allowing the base station to change the data rate more frequently than the individual wireless units reports the rate information, the rate adaptation system can provide improved flexibility and more efficient use of wireless resources while reducing the processing and transmission overhead required to report the rate information. For example, every 3 slots, a wireless unit can calculate and report a rate for the wireless unit to use on a shared channel to send data. The base station receives the rates from the wireless units seeking to send data over the shared channel and selects a wireless unit to use the shared channel.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2000Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Nandu Gopalakrishnan, Teck H. Patent number: 7009980Abstract: A heterogeneous telecommunications system employs “out of band” signalling to automatically discover the identity of the two ports connecting two network elements through a specific link. Either of the connected network elements may be a circuit switching network element or a packet switching network element. One network element initiates the port discovery process and transmits an overhead signal, such as a SONET/SDH protection switching message, to the network element attached at the other end of the link. The other network element monitors the status of its ports and, when it detects a change in state at one of the ports, resulting from the first network element's transmissions, the receiving, or passive, network element recognizes the port as the port which forms a part of the link of interest. Each group of network elements, packet switching and circuit switching, elects a network element leader which coordinates requests for port identification.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2000Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Yang Cao

Patent number: 7010104Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for charging and billing of Circuit Switch, Packet Switch, and IP Multimedia Subsystems in third generation telecommunication systems. The charges for a call are computed by a rating engine, a software system comprising data tables and a program for calculating charges from the parameters of the call, such as the calling and called numbers, the length of the call, and special charge items such as priority service. For calls whose billing cannot be deferred, referred to as on-line billing calls, the rating engine is accessed immediately. For calls whose billing can be deferred, referred to as off-line billing calls, the rating engine performs its function only when the rating engine is not busy rating on-line billing calls, for example, during periods outside the busy hour. Advantageously, only a single rating engine is required, and the capacity of that single rating engine is determined only by the busy-hour volume of on-line billing calls.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2004Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Yigang Cai, Qing Hong He, Min Liu, John B. Patent number: 7010010Abstract: A broadband CLE capable of operation simultaneously at multiple wavelengths comprises: a core region including a multiplicity or cascade of stages, each stage including a radiative transition region. A first group of stages emits radiation at a first wavelength and at a first aggregate intensity per group, and a second group of stages emits radiation at a second wavelength and at a second aggregate intensity per group lower than the first intensity. The invention is characterized in that the second group has more stages than said first group, and the per-stage intensity of the first group is greater than that of the second group. This design reduces the difference between said first and second aggregate intensities. In one embodiment, groups that are located at or near to the ends of the cascade have more stages than groups that are centrally located within the cascade regardless of their wavelength.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2003Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Federico Capasso, Alfred Yi Cho, Claire F.
