Abstract: A real time data transmission method is used in a network in which a real time media gateway is provided to allow access to the internet backbone in addition to the usual GPRS specific gateway. The method involves changing the header in a real time data stream as it passes through the network so that it can pass directly to the real time gateway without passing through the GPRS specific gateway. This ensures that the data stream travels along a more direct route and shortens the headers used in the data stream in the process.

Abstract: Various apparatus and methods for generating a 90° AP optical pulsetrain. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes: (1) a phase-modulated optical signal generator configured to generate a phase-modulated optical signal having a carrier band and sidebands phase-shifted relative thereto by multiples of 90° and (2) an optical filter coupled to the phase-modulated optical signal generator and configured to 180° phase-shift selected ones of the carrier band and sidebands to generate the 90° AP optical pulsetrain.
Abstract: In a telecommunications transmitter and receiver two IQ-mixers of the same type are operated in 180 degrees phase shift. In both the transmitter and receiver, an input signal is coupled to each IQ-mixer and the output signal of the mixers are combined so as to cancel unwanted error components in each individual output signal. In the transmitter, residual carrier signals are cancelled, and in the receiver, DC-offsets are cancelled. In both, the wanted signals are added, doubling the amplitude of the resultant output signal leading to four times more output power and improved dynamic range.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for supplying cooling air to electronic equipment from ones of at least two sources. A detector detects whether the quality, such as the temperature of the cooling air from a source, is satisfactory and if not shuts the damper to that source and opens the damper to another source. A main controller provides additional control signals for controlling the dampers to protect the electronic equipment, or for shutting down the electronic equipment.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for providing voice communication over a packetized network in which quality of service is guaranteed for voice communications. The method involves identifying reserved paths within the network, such as multi-protocol label switching paths. When a call is made, the identified reserved paths are evaluated to determine whether each contains sufficient bandwidth for the requested voice communication. The effective bandwidth for the call is estimated based on the codec used for the call, the service class parameter set from the caller's user profile, the time of day, and other parameters. A priority parameter is set for the requested voice communication, which may be based on the service class parameter, and is mapped to a specific Differentiated Service Code Point (DSCP) and 802.1p service class parameter. If the reserved path is determined to contain sufficient bandwidth, the requested voice communication is transmitted over the reserved path at the set priority.
Abstract: A software program is configured in accordance with a software aging process such that one or more files generated by the program are at least partially encrypted using a cryptographic key associated with a current time interval for which the files are generated. The cryptographic key may be a symmetric key used for both encryption and decryption operations, such that cryptographic key used for encryption in a given interval is also required to decrypt files encrypted during that interval. Periodic updates of the software program are provided to a legitimate user of the software program, with a given one of the updates including a different cryptographic key associated with a subsequent time interval. The cryptographic key associated with a particular one of the time intervals may be common to each of a set of legitimate copies of the software program that have received the corresponding version of the periodic update.

Abstract: A reel for storing optical fiber is disclosed that significantly reduces the torsional force applied to optical fiber as the fiber is being wound onto the reel for storage. The optical fiber reel comprises two spindles that are offset with respect to the rotational center of the reel. Such an arrangement causes the fiber to be wound onto the reel in a substantially linear fashion, thus preventing the torsional force and resulting twisting that cause micro-cracks to develop. The spindles are of a sufficiently large diameter to facilitate operational use of the fiber while stored on the spindle without increasing the attenuation of signals that could result from the use of a smaller diameter spindle.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for user-based provisioning of distribution channels in a communications network allows an end user to select and initiate digital distribution channel allocation to accommodate their needs instead of submitting a service order to the telephone company each time a change in channel allocation is desired. In one implementation, a user-accessed provisioning terminal at a Distant Terminal (DT) receives a subscriber's distribution channel allocation selection after the user is authorized. The user's allocation selection is transmitted to a Remote terminal (RT) via a control channel, such as the Facility Data Line of an ESF-type T1 line or a dedicated data link that directly connects the DT and an RT. When the RT receives a provisioning message from a DT, the RT confirms that the provisioning selection is acceptable and automatically rearranges its time-slot interchange (TSI) connections according to the provisioning change initiated by the user.
Abstract: Improved frequency utilization in a radio network is achieved by using a radio system with a plurality of base stations, which respectively have at least one transmitter and one receiver, each base station being assigned at least one dual-polarized antenna. More efficient utilization of the available frequency band, and consequently a reduction in the cluster size, is made possible by the dual-polarized antenna being assigned a polarization modulator for changing at predetermined points in time the polarization state of a transmit signal to be transmitted.

Abstract: A mirror for an optical MEMS device has a plurality of segments supported on a substrate layer. Each segment includes a support post, a support layer, and a reflective layer formed over the support layer. The reflective layers of the plurality of segments form the reflective surface of the mirror. Due to the relatively small lateral dimensions of the segments, the mirror has a smaller thermal bow than prior art mirrors. The bow can be controlled, e.g., by appropriately choosing the number of segments and the layer thicknesses.
Abstract: A method of verifying that a CDMA code allocator maintains mutual orthogonality between all concurrently busy codes includes the steps of identifying a code being allocated by the allocator, and determining if the identified code is busy. It is also determined if any ancestral parent of the identified code is busy, and if any descendant of the identified code is busy. If the identified code, one of the identified code's ancestral parents, or one of the identified code's descendants is determined to be busy, then an error in allocator operation is indicated.

Abstract: The inventors propose herein a novel band filter design for planar lightwave circuits. In one embodiment of the present invention, the band filter includes two waveguide grating routers interconnected by a third waveguide grating, wherein waveguides comprising the third waveguide grating have unequal path lengths. In addition, the waveguides in the third grating are partitioned into sets of adjacent waveguides wherein each set corresponds to a particular wavelength band for the filter. The individual sets of waveguides are spaced at their connection to the second waveguide grating router such that optical signals within predetermined, different optical wavelength bands are routed to different output ports of the band filter. Some of the advantages of this novel band filter include compactness, sharp passband corners, low spectral ripple, and a lack of chromatic dispersion.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the observed rate of change of the channel characteristics in a system with multiple antennas at a mobile terminal. The slowing down of the observed channel fluctuations is effectuated on the downlink by either calculating or receiving signals that have a similar Doppler shift, referred to herein as Doppler-compensatable signals, and processing one or more of the Doppler-compensatable signals to compensate for Doppler shift. The slowing down of the observed channel fluctuations is effectuated on the uplink by pre-compensating symbol streams with the Doppler shift associated with the direction in which they are transmitted, so that the observed Doppler shift of these signals when they are received is reduced or even eliminated.
Abstract: A MEMS device having a deformable mirror. In a representative embodiment, the MEMS device includes a deformable membrane supporting a plurality of light-reflecting segments that form the deformable mirror. One or more actuators, at least one of which is configured to apply torque to a side of the membrane, are used to deform the membrane. Membrane deformation causes the segments to change orientation and thereby change the shape of the minor. A representative MEMS device of the invention enables segment displacements in two directions and thereby realizes effective mirror curvature values in the range from about ?2 mm?1 to about +2 mm?1.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for improving the processing time of reduced complexity sequence estimation techniques, such as reduced state sequence estimation. Precomputing the branch metrics for all possible symbol combinations in the channel memory makes it possible to remove the branch metrics unit and decision-feedback unit from the feedback loop, thereby reducing the critical path. A set of multiplexers select the appropriate branch metrics based on the survivor symbols in the corresponding survivor path cells. The computational load of the precomputations is reduced for multi-dimensional trellis codes by precomputing each dimension of the multi-dimensional trellis code separately.
Abstract: A method for determining the reverse link data Rate Limit for mobile stations active on the reverse link of a High Data Rate system is disclosed. In the ideal case, the Rate Limit is based on only the number of mobile stations located in a common sector that are actually active on the reverse link. Currently, the Rate Limit is determined from the total number of mobile stations in a common sector where the total includes mobiles that are transmitting and receiving. Thus, the current method includes mobile stations that are active on the forward link and may not be active on the reverse link. In this invention, a more optimum method of estimating the reverse link loading is obtained from calculations which includes only the mobile stations which are active on the reverse link. An estimate of the reverse link loading of the mobile stations in a common cell is obtained by adding together the data rates of the data sent from each mobile in a common sector during a common frame.

Abstract: A cache replacement system and method for changing the number of cached copies of segments of a media clip in response to rank change for the media clip is disclosed. Whenever rank change for a media clip is detected at an origin server, rank change information is distributed to proxy servers organized in a loosely coupled distributed cache. Each proxy server uses this information to recompute caching probabilities for segments of the media clip in order to determine which segments of the clip to store or discard, thereby forming a new cache layout for the clip at each proxy server. Segments are neither added nor deleted to build the new cache layout until client requests for segments of the clip are received at proxy servers. Upon receiving client requests, construction of the new cache layout occurs on a segment-by-segment basis by employing techniques of lazy caching and token exchange.
