Abstract: In a shaft seal having a radial plane seal ring gap and comprising a seal ring rotating with a shaft, and a non-rotating seal ring mounted on a housing of the seal through an element which is elastically yielding in every direction and serves as a packing at the same time, the sealing fluid flows into the sealing gap through supply bores and through associated distributing pockets which are provided in the non-rotating seal ring and/or at the outer or inner circumference of the rotating seal ring. Sensors for measuring the sealing gap are provided in the non-rotating seal ring on the gap side. By means of the measured values, electromagnets disposed in the seal housing to face each other and cooperating with opposite magnetizable bodies provided in the non-rotating seal ring, are electronically controlled to maintain a predetermined constant small width of the seal gap.

  • Patent number: 4434987
Abstract: A seal device for a shaft rotating with respect to a housing comprises a rotating seal ring having opposite radial side surfaces and a circumferential end surface. The rotating seal ring is connected for co-rotation with the shaft. A non-rotating seal ring is non-rotatably connected to the housing over a yielding packing element and surrounds at least a portion of the rotating seal ring to define axial plane sealing gaps and an annular circumferential gap. Sealing fluid is pumped to each gap over bores communicating with the radial plane gaps. An electromagnet is connected to the housing and attracts or repels magnetic material in a radially extending portion of the non-rotating seal ring for regulating the width of each radial plane gap. Electromagnet is connected over a control unit to a sensor for sensing each gap, to maintain a selected gap width for each gap by regulating the activation of the electromagnet. The non-rotating seal ring is also slidable within a smooth sleeve connected to the housing.

  • Patent number: 4427323
Abstract: A device is disclosed for cutting two parallel partially intersecting bores, such as the bores used in a screw type compressor housing, comprising, a device housing, a pair of spindles rotatably mounted to the housing and a tool holder connected near the end of each spindle. The spindles are engaged with each other through gears so that rotation of one spindle in one direction causes rotation of the other spindle in opposite direction. A drive shaft is connected to one of the spindles for rotating the pair of spindles simultaneously. Each tool holder is elongated along a major tool holder axis thereof which is substantially transverse to an axis of its associated spindle. The major axes of the two tool holders are always substantially perpendicular to each other so that free rotation of the two spindles, in opposite directions is possible.

  • Patent number: 4426565
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the travel speed of automatic welding machines uses a rotatable member which is engaged with the workpiece as the workpiece is moved relative to the welding head. The rotatable member advantageously includes one or more apertures on one side of which light is directed and the opposite side of which light pulses are received during rotation of the member and these pulses are used as an indication of the speed of the welding machine. In the preferred apparatus a separate frictional member is frictionally engaged with the workpiece and moved by the movement of the workpiece relative to the welding head and through suitable gearing drives the rotatable member having the aperture.

  • Patent number: 4421339
Abstract: An articulated vehicle such as, a bus having a lead car and a trailer coupled to each other through the intermediary of a central ball joint in the central longitudinal plane of the vehicle. The central ball joint transmits only horizontal forces between the lead car and the trailer and can therefore be supported through comparatively lightweight elements which require little space. The transmission of vertical forces between the lead car and trailer is effected through arms located on both sides of the joint. A cardan shaft is extended along the longitudinal center plane of the articulated vehicle from the lead car to the trailer.

  • Patent number: 4417549
Abstract: A sealing system is intended for wet cylinder liners and having a flange seat on the crankcase of internal combustion engines. Sealing rings are respectively provided in the recess and in an annular groove arranged in the area of the upper guiding portion of the liner. The annular groove should not reduce the length of the guiding portion by more than 40%. In this manner, salt crystals forming as cooling water evaporates are prevented from penetrating up to the top sealing ring, so that this ring will not be corroded, and its sealing action is maintained.

  • Patent number: 4405175
Abstract: A resilient sealing frame having two continuous slots, one for accommodating the periphery of a vehicle window and the other for accommodating a web projecting from the vehicle body into the vehicle opening which accommodates the window. One wall of each slot has a continuous groove, and a pair of closely spaced-apart holes extend from each groove to the exterior surface of the sealing frame. Each groove is flanked by prominent sealing lips which seal against a surface of its respective window or web. The short length of each groove between the pair of holes is plugged, such as with a resilient cord. Fluid cement is injected into one of the holes of each pair; the cement flows through the long length of each groove and when it reaches the other hole of the pair, further injection of cement is terminated, since the groove has been completely filled.

  • Patent number: 4401071
Abstract: The invention sets forth a method and apparatus for improving the injection and mixture of fuel and air in air-compressing combustion engines. The fuel is admitted into a rotationally symmetrical combustion chamber in such a manner that all droplets of the fuel stream are finely atomized at all speed and/or load ranges of the engine, and that the complete spray on entering the combustion chamber is so broken up that, from the combustion chamber wall to a point approximately one third of the combustion chamber radius, the broken-up spray matches the combustion chamber geometry, the injection of the fuel being effected in such a manner as to match the velocity and/or density distribution of the combustion air which rotates in the combustion chamber.
