Abstract: Compositions of matter comprising nitro-substituted metal complexes of porphyrins are catalysts for the oxidation of alkanes. The metal is iron, chromium, manganese, ruthenium, copper or cobalt. The porphyrin ring has nitro groups attached thereto in meso and/or .beta.-pyrrolic positions.
Abstract: The present invention pertains to an apparatus for measuring nasal air flow. The apparatus includes a head for interacting with at least one of the nasal cavities of a patient. The head has a measuring chamber through which air is inhaled into and exhaled from the nasal cavity. A resistance wire is positioned within the measuring chamber with the path of air flow. There is also a current generator electrically connected to the resistance wire for providing a constant current through the resistance wire such that the resistance wire is heated. The apparatus further includes means for analyzing change in voltage across the resistance wire over time such that air flow through the measuring chamber is determined. The analyzing means is electrically connected to the resistance wire. There are also means for displaying the determined air flow. The present invention is also a method for measuring nasal air flow.

Abstract: Novel precipitated silicon dioxide abrasive compositions which can be incorporated into therapeutic toothpaste compositions containing soluble fluoride salts are disclosed. The abrasives comprise low structure, high fluoride compatible amorphous precipitated silicon dioxides (silicas) having a controlled refractive index for use in low water clear gel dentifrice applications. Also provided are methods for preparation of the novel silicon dioxide abrasives and resulting toothpaste formulations containing such abrasives.
Abstract: A method and device for detecting errors in a digital time switch that does not require the signal to be synchronous throughout a multi-plane processing unit in a digital time switch. The present invention allows for the detection and localization of errors occurring in one section of one plane in a multi-plane unit. The invention is preferably included in a telecommunications system operating with pulse code modulation and time multiplex. In a multi-plane portion of a digital time switch, there is generated for each one of corresponding parallel planes at corresponding locations a compressed version of the data signal and the corresponding compressed data signals are compared. An alarm is given when the comparison shows a difference between the compressed signals.
Abstract: A method of treating acid poisoning in mammals or of lowering blood cholesterol levels in mammals, which involves administering to the mammals a pharmaceutically effective amount of an aminated dextrin where amine groups or residues are present in an amount of from 0.5 to 2 groups per glucose unit.
Abstract: The engineering of foreign vertebrate gene constructs by recombinant DNA techniques for the more efficient processing and secretion of foreign genes in insect systems is done by replacing the foreign vertebrate protein signal peptide sequences with protein signal sequences from insect cell secreted proteins. A baculovirus expression vector system is constructed wherein the natural signal DNA peptide sequence associated with the desired foreign gene, such as CD4 (T cell surface protein T4) is replaced by the signal DNA sequence from the insect signal peptides coding for the cuticle gene or adipokinetic hormone.
Abstract: A vibration test apparatus for applying simultaneously three equal mutually-orthogonal vibration forces to each of at least two test objects so that each of said forces extends parallel to a corresponding respective one of mutually-orthogonal X, Y and Z axes of each test object. The apparatus comprises a fixture adapted for attachment to a conventional shaker table or a sliptable that has two or four object-supporting plates disposed in a selected angular relationship with the shaker table or sliptable. This angular relationship is selected so that the input vibration force generated by the shaker table is translated into the three equal forces, each of which extends parallel to a corresponding respective one of the three mutually-orthogonal axes of each test object secured to said fixture.
Abstract: An animated wind up toy, that is safe, durable, lightweight, compact and includes a wind up motor that drives a cam actuated mechanism that causes the toy to move. The wind up toy has an outward contour and coloring that resembles a food item, such as a milk shake, fries or hamburger.

Abstract: A roll, specifically a paper machine press roll, with a hollow rotatable roll body features a roll shell and on at least one of its two ends a hollow roll journal. A guide body which is stationary or fastened to the roll body extends through the interior of the roll body and forms with the roll shell a channel system through which a tempering medium flows. For purposes of using air as tempering medium, a pressure blower and/or a suction blower are connected to the channel system. The channel system and the blower(s) are so dimensioned that an air flow velocity above 10 m/sec will materialize in the channel system.
Abstract: Barium peroxide oxidizer, together with a transition metal from Group I, III, IV, V, VII or VIII or compound thereof is used as stoichiometric reagent in the oxidative dimerization of hydrocarbons having three or four carbon atoms. Barium peroxide oxidizer, together with a transition metal from Group I, III, IV, V, VI, VII or VIII or compound thereof is used as stoichiometric reagent in the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons having three or four carbon atoms.
Abstract: A motion detector is incorporated on a drilling rig for detection of drill string motion. An output of the motion detector provides an enabling signal for conversion of block height data to bit depth drill string velocity or penetration rate without errors associated with block motion during static drill string conditions.
Abstract: A vending machine for providing french fried potatoes from dehydrated powder. Powder is metered into a cylinder of a rotatable, multi-cylinder cylinder block. Water is added when the block is rotated to the next stop. After mixing and two ready stations, the dough is extruded into hot oil in a cooking chamber. The oil is filtered and is then replenished from a reservoir. The dry powder and rehydrating stations are refrigerated. The vending machine includes absorption and adsorption filters to scrub the air while cooking to decrease oil odors.

Abstract: A ski and ski-binding combination. The ski has several holes for receiving therein fastening screws for the selective fastening of ski-binding elements arranged in the ski in the binding-installation area. The holes are covered, however, are marked to the outside by markings. The arrangement of holes for the ski-binding elements is adjusted to the length of the ski and chosen such that the ski bindings are suited to receive only a limited number of successive ski-boot sizes.

Abstract: An improved butterfly mop comprises a sponge member adapted to be either urged into a normal position for cleaning, or folded inwardly upon itself in a compressed position to facilitate squeezing of the sponge member, or folded outwardly upon itself into a retracted position with the underside of the sponge member exposed to facilitate maneuvering the sponge into narrow recesses or around tight corners. In one embodiment the butterfly mop comprises retraction members secured to the sponge member whereby the sponge member is easily forced into its retracted position.
Abstract: The press brake of the invention comprises a cross bar-like pressure ram member. The two lateral ends thereof are connected each to the piston rod of a pressure bar operating cylinder. For transmitting the power exerted by the operating cylinder, there is provided an articulated joint assembly with two articulated joints which are arranged in series as seen in the power transmission direction. Thereby, a complete absence of clearance in the pressure ram driving elements can be realized and higher tolerances as far as the parallelism of the two operating cylinders can be accepted. Furthermore, an operational tilting of the pressure ram member with relatively high tilting angle is possible.
Abstract: A thin film electrocoagulation liquid treatment apparatus includes a nonconductive housing formed by opposite top and bottom walls, opposite side walls, and tubular end members with slots therethrough which define a treatment chamber. Pluralities of elongated electrodes extend between the side walls and are spaced along the top and bottom walls in spaced apart interleaved relation to define a serpentine fluid treatment path. The tubular end members form fluid connections, one end member receiving liquid to be treated from a supply conduit and the other discharging the treated liquid to a discharge conduit. A DC power supply has opposite poles thereof connected respectively to the sets of electrodes in such a manner that the polarity on succeeding electrodes is opposite. The first two electrodes in the flow direction of the fluid path are preferably connected to the negative pole of the power supply.
