Abstract: A magazine for V-nails for use in underpinning of picture frames receives a strip of V-nails secured together by heat-bonded non-adhesive synthetic plastic material through an opening of greater width than the V-nails. A pusher has a downwardly projecting tongue which is driven in the machine and has depending side walls at its forward end affording a contact point for pushing the V-nails at their center of gravity towards a pair of locating formations and the extreme forward end. A single V-nail which may be presented either point foremost or point rearmost is removed from the end of the strip in the underpinning operation, the magazine being cut away and the pusher being cut away to permit this operation. On return of the drive member, a cam firstly returns the pusher to a stop in the magazine and then lifts the magazine from its operative position to enable it to be removed or refilled.

Abstract: A vehicle has as its prime source of power a fly-wheel (6) that is connected to a driving wheel of the vehicle through a continuously variable transmission mechanism (16). The transmission mechanism comprises conical drive members (53, 54, 82), with a spherical transmission element (55,) 81 between the conical surfaces, to transmit rotary forces from one drive member to the other. In this way rotation energy from the fly-wheel may be transmitted to the drive wheel on acceleration of the vehicle, or transmitted from the drive wheel to the fly-wheel of retardation of the vehicle. The vehicle is for use in a transportation system in which the vehicle travels around a predetermined route, with the fly-wheel being recharged either mechanically or electrically at a vehicle terminus (L).

Abstract: An internal gear pump is disclosed having at least two essentially identical internal gears and a pinion meshing with the internal gears, all being rotatably disposed in a housing, the axial dimension of which is substantially equal to the width of the gear and pinion teeth. The housing includes a suction connection and a pressure connection. The internal gears have radial through-bores for the medium to be pumped. A support is provided at the contacting surfaces of the internal gears near the pressure connection.
Abstract: The hydroxyl group in a pyrrolic compound having in the 2-position thereof a group having the formula R(OH)CH--R is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, is replaced by a group, for example a p-nitrobenzoate group, having better leaving properties than those of hydroxyl for a subsequent self-condensation and cyclization of the pyrrolic compound to form a meso-hydrocarbyl or meso-substituted hydrocarbyl porphyrin.
Abstract: A novel compound for controlling (treatment and prevention) of ocular inflammation or systemic inflammatory disease is disclosed. The compound, OB-186, is effective at both the early and late phases of inflammation. The compound is useful for the treatment or prevention of inflammation in both the anterior and posterior portions of the eye and systemic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, glyomerulonephritis, allergic inflammation and allergic encephalomyelitis.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of regulating or adjusting the transmission power when transmitting signals between a mobile station and a base station in a digital mobile telephony system. The output power is regulated to maintain the transmission power at an optimum level to prevent unnecessary disturbance of neighboring channels transmitting information on the same frequency and to insure that the transmitted information is interpreted properly in the receiver. The measured values of signal strength and signal-transmission quality are collected, and their mean values are calculated. An anticipated value of signal strength and transmission quality is then calculated at a next time-point provided that the transmission power is maintained unchanged in relation to the transmission power at the present or instant time period (t.sub.0). The transmission power at the next time period (t.sub.1) is regulated on the basis of these anticipated signal strength and quality values.
Abstract: In a mobile cellular radio system, load balancing is achieved by moving dynamically the borders between any two cells such that an overloaded cell becomes smaller and the neighboring cell larger. This is achieved by lowering the entering signal strength threshold for handoff to the neighboring cell and/or increasing the entering signal strength threshold for handoff from the neighboring cell. Thresholds are unique for any two cells.
Abstract: In a web pick-up device and a method of using the pick-up device in the press section of a paper machine, the running web makes contact, in a press gap, with a smooth rotating surface from which the web runs off at a point of pickup (A). The rotating surface and a suction box form together, in the area of the pickup point (A), a gap through which runs a porous conveyer belt which receives the fibrous web. The suction box is pivotably mounted and has in the area of the point of pickup (A) a sliding surface across which slides the conveyer belt, and which during operation is arranged at an adjustable spacing from the smooth surface. The spacing is determined by a stop on which bears the suction box during operation, under the effect of a flexible lift device.
Abstract: A stitch forming machine is provided including a transducer for determining the tension present in a thread, wherein the thread tension assumes a higher value during stitch formation and the transducer provides a signal representing the tension level. The control is provided for evaluating the signal corresponding to the tension level. The control includes a comparator device for comparing a peak of the signal representing the tension level, which peak can be used to detect a malfunction, with a limit signal, corresponding to a limit tension. The comparator sends a signal to a switching device when a signal peak drops below the limit signal. The switching device may be connected to a shut-off device of the drive motor of the machine as well as one or more display elements. In this way, the machine may be stopped and the display element associated with a limit tension, below which the tension dropped by a switching device.

Abstract: A doctor blade includes at least one row of openings extending across at least 10% of the blade width in an area representing the actual working width of the blade. The openings begin at a distance between 3 and 35 mm from the working edge of the blade. The openings may be formed as perforations, slots, or notches.
Abstract: A system for indicating the deposit of mailing mailbox comprises a two channel transmitter positioned within a mailbox and a two channel receiver positioned within a household. The first channel of the system provides a means for indicating at the receiver the opening of the mailbox door (deposit of mail) and the second channel of the system provides a means for resetting the indication of a deposit of mail. The transmitter and receiver both have means for resetting the indication of a deposit of mail. The transmitter has a spring clip for attachment to the mailbox.
Abstract: An electronic timepiece having a face forming a simulated sundial, a gnomon, a first and second plurality of electronic display circuit elements extending radially from the first and second ends of the base of the gnomon and a control circuit to activate selected display circuit elements to simulate a functioning sundial is disclosed. In one arrangement, the timepiece has a digital auxiliary display and a circuit to convert from the digital display to the selected display circuit elements. The timepiece, in one arrangement, includes a day/night indicator in the form of a solar disk for day and a moon crescent for night.
Abstract: The assembly of the invention includes a pressure vessel having a size to fit in a usual home refrigerator for the domestic fermenting of a fermentable liquid mixture under pressure and under chilled conditions. The pressure vessel defines a closed fermentation chamber for containing a bath having an amount of fermentable liquid mixture effective to provide a pressurized atmosphere above the surface of the bath within the closed fermentation chamber during the fermenting process. A pressure relief valve controls the pressure within the fermentation chamber at a level sufficient to maintain safety conditions during the fermentation process. Pressurized gaseous material is introduced into the pressure vessel upon completion of the fermentation process to maintain pressure in the bath within the chamber.

Abstract: A drip irrigation unit for insertion into a water supply pipe for reducing the flow through an outlet opening in the water supply pipe, includes a cylindrical member of a deformable elastomeric material fixed within the water supply pipe. The cylindrical member is formed with an inlet opening therethrough for conducting water from the interior of the water supply pipe to the outer face of the cylindrical member, and an outlet cavity in the outer face of the cylindrical member alignable with the outlet opening in the water supply pipe. A regulated flow-reducing pathway between the inlet opening and outlet cavity includes multiple, series-connected pressure-compensating chambers whose cross-sectional areas are changed by the deformation of the elastomeric cylindrical member to regulate the flow of the water in response to changes in the water supply pressure.
