Patent number: 5074614Abstract: An automobile rigid convertible roof (4) retracts horizontally rearward over the rear part of the upper body. The rear end of the roof is supported by two external elongated struts (12L and 12R) which are permanently attached to the rear corners of the roof at their upper ends and retract with it as a unit. Strut bottom rollers (18) are guided by guides (22) mounted adjacent the vehicle rear deck. The struts (12) are outside of the vehicle cockpit enclosure. The retracted roof is moved horizontally so that the retracted roof panel does not interfere with rear vision from the cockpit and in the retracted position does not use any cockpit or vehicle trunk volume for roof storage.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1991Date of Patent: December 24, 1991Assignee: Laura M. Patent number: 5072818Abstract: The invention concerns an elastic clutch including a hydraulic damping device wherein a viscous damping medium is displaced through predetermined gaps upon occurrence of large angles of rotation. To that end, a cam arranged on one clutch half plunges into a capsule type displacement chamber. The cam features friction elements which in the plunging make elastic and sealing contact with the sidewalls of the capsule, thereby causing both an effective sealing of the displacement chamber and also a frictional damping which supports the hydraulic damping. The disk type second clutch half can, during operation, more freely adjust within the clutch, which simplifies the manufacture.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1990Date of Patent: December 17, 1991Assignee: J. Patent number: 5072166Abstract: Rotor position information for a switched reluctance (SR) motor drive is obtained indirectly in response to the motor phase inductance. An oscillator generates a signal having a time period that is a function of the inductance. The signal is processed by other circuits to obtain proper instants of commutation. In the preferred motor drive, the energized phase windings are isolated from the oscillator, and periodic signals are obtained which have periods indicating the phase inductances of the unenergized phase windings. The periods are compared to threshold values to obtain position indicating signals, and commutating signals are derived from the position indicating signals.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1990Date of Patent: December 10, 1991Assignee: The Texas A&M University SystemInventor: Mehrdad Ehsani

Patent number: 5069428Abstract: A method and apparatus of dynamic heat treating the ferromagnetic amorphous alloys by applying AC current or pulsed high current on the alloys in the form of a ribbon are disclosed. The amorphous ribbon is continuously passed through a pair of electrodes from which AC current is conducted on the amorphous ribbon to perform a Joule heating. A DC magnetic field is applied on the amorphous ribbon preferably along a length direction thereof to improve the soft magnetic properties of the amorphous alloys. The DC magnetic field can be applied on either the section of the amorphous ribbon between the pair of electrodes or the section that has already been heat treated. With the method and apparatus, ferromagnetic amorphous alloys with improved magnetic properties such as greater magnetic induction, lower coercivity and low hysteresis loss are resulted and the annealing embrittlement is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1989Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignees: James C. Patent number: 5070303Abstract: An amplifier/detector chain logarithmically amplifies an input signal as well as compensates for delays generated by necessary bandwidth restrictions. A plurality of amplifiers are connected in series and grouped in amplifier stages with each stage having at least one amplifier. In between each amplfier stage is a filter which restricts the bandwidth of signals to frequencies in a desired signal range. When an amplifier stage includes more than one amplifier, a local summer sums the outputs detected by detectors associated with each amplifier in a particular stage. When an amplifier stage includes only a single amplifier associated detector, the local sum signal for the stage is simply the detector output. No local summer is required. Because of the time delay introduced by each interposed filter, each local sum is input to a corresponding compensating device which compensates for the associated time delay.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 1990Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M EricssonInventor: Paul W. Patent number: 5068980Abstract: A paper web travels together with a support belt over two heatable drying cylinders and a guide roll between the cylinders, which together define a pocket. Vacuum prevails in the pocket upon operation. Above the pocket there is provided a sealing strip support with sealing strips fastened to it. The sealing strips are at the drying cylinders where they enter the pocket, and these strips counter the penetration of air into the pocket. The sealing strip support is moveable in various ways so that the distance between the sealing strips and the cylinder outer surfaces can be enlarged temporarily. The guide roll is hollow, is connectable with a vacuum source and has a perforated roll shell and is free of stationary inserted parts. A separate vacuum source communicates with extra perforations at axial end edge chambers of the guide roll for applying greater vacuum at the edge chambers than over the remainder of the roll.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1990Date of Patent: December 3, 1991Assignee: J. Patent number: 5067912Abstract: A subassembly for microwave structure such as a connector is described. An insulator for spacing of at least one center conductor is formed of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and effectively bonded to at least one center conductor to be used in the connector. The PTFE may be bonded to the conductor by employing an intermediate layer of FEP (fluorinated ethylene-propylene) that can be bonded to the center conductor. Bonding of the components into an integral subassembly is done in a single step involving heating and pressurizing a pre-assembly in a mold to a sufficient amount and for a sufficient time to provide an acceptably strong bond. Superior electrical characteristics such as a low SWR and insertion loss are achieved in captivated and/or sealed connectors. A good seal is achieved between the insulator and the outer conductor by forming an undercut in the latter, filling it with silicone grease and enabling a temporarily mechanically-collapsed bead on the insulator to expand into the undercut.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1987Date of Patent: November 26, 1991Assignee: M/A-Com Adams-Russell, Inc.Inventors: Wayne F.
