  • Patent number: 6282427
Abstract: In selecting location measurement units for measuring an uplink signal received from a mobile communication station operating in a wireless communication network in order to locate the position of the mobile communication station in the wireless communication network, a possible position of the mobile station in the network is identified. The location measurement units to be used in measuring the uplink signal can then be identified by evaluating one or more of relative positional relationships between the possible position of the mobile station and a plurality of further positions respectively associated with a plurality of location measurement units in the network; path loss measures predicted for each of a plurality of location measurement units relative to the possible position of the mobile station; and geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) values determined for each of a plurality of groups of location measurement units with respect to the possible position of the mobile station.

Abstract: A wrapping apparatus, in which the supporting elements (4) supporting a film roll (5) are mounted on the frame (3) of a film dispenser (1) with bearings permitting free rotation so that the film roll supported by them is freely rotatable. The pre-stretching rollers (6, 7) are mutually engaged via a transmission and are likewise mounted on the frame with bearings permitting free rotation. A pendulum roller (9) comprised in the film dispenser and the spring force of a spring (10) applying a load on it have been so adapted that the pendulum roller (9) forms between the second pre-stretching roller (7) and the deflecting roller (11) a bend that functions as a film supply containing a varying amount of film, depending on the prevailing draw of the film to keep the drawing velocity and tension of the film substantially constant at the pre-stretching rollers regardless of the variation in the draw and velocity of the film that is caused by the shape of the article being wrapped.

  • Patent number: 6275692
Abstract: A mobile station operating in a cellular communication network requests service from a server coupled to the cellular communication network. Within the mobile station is composed a request for service including a code for use by the server in determining operational capabilities of the mobile station. The request for service is then sent from the mobile station to the server. The server uses the code to determine operational capabilities of the mobile station, and then provides a level of service to the mobile station commensurate with the operational capabilities of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6275798
Abstract: In producing an approximation of an original speech signal from encoded information about the original speech signal, current parameters associated with a current segment of the original speech signal are determined from the encoded information. Reproduction of a noise component of the original speech signal is improved by using at least one of the current parameters and corresponding previous parameters respectively associated with previous segments of the original speech signal to produce a modified parameter. The modified parameter is then used to produce an approximation of the current segment of the original speech signal.

  • Patent number: 6272450
Abstract: A traffic simulator for a cellular radio telecommunications network. The traffic simulator includes a function handler which generates a plurality of basic call functions performed by mobile stations (MSs) over an air interface link with the network. A sequence handler utilizes the basic functions to generate a plurality of call sequences, and a traffic mix handler utilizes the plurality of call sequences to generate an overall traffic mix. A MS handler includes a plurality of MS state machines for different types of MSs and a database of MS properties. The MS handler interfaces with the basic functions to generate realistic inputs to the sequence handler. A cells handler includes a database of cells in the network and parameters relating to radio conditions. The cells handler also interfaces with the basic functions to generate realistic inputs to the sequence handler. A traffic repository may inject recorded real mobile station traffic into the traffic mix.

  • Patent number: 6272436
Abstract: The present invention provides a new analysis based on Differential Spectral Topographic Analysis (DISTA). Using data from the spectral methods known in the art, DISTA is based upon the normalization of the spectra to a fixed topographic space, creating a set of spectral forms, and the summation of the absolute differences in topography between one or more reference spectra and the test spectra taken at different magnitudes of the perturbing parameter. This method allows for a sensitive estimate of the fraction of form A and form B of an entity of interest. This method also allows for the calculation of apparent free energy from the conversion of the entity of interest from a first to a second form where appropriate, and in the alternative, calculation of a fraction of structural changes.

  • Patent number: 6267755
Abstract: A method of hair depilation using an Nd:YAG laser which causes local heating at the hair bulb due to the absorption of the oxyhemoglobin contained in the capillaries. The Nd:YAG laser operates at 1060 nanometers. Each pulse is a special pulse having a first portion and a second portion, where power output in the first portion is 20 times greater than power output in the second portion. That way, the first portion of each pulse is used to quickly heat up the tissue to a damaging temperature, and the second portion maintains that temperature to cause hair removal for the tissue.

  • Patent number: 6268683
Abstract: A transducer for use in an ultrasonic gas flow meter includes a housing having an open end and a closed end with a side wall extending therebetween. The closed end of the housing is shaped to receive and transmit sound waves during operation of the transducer. A resonator is positioned in the housing with a transmitting and receiving end facing the closed end of the housing. A thickness of the side wall of the housing at the closed end is less than at a position further toward the open end in order to divert and diffuse spurious vibrations that might otherwise occur near the resonating frequency of the transducer. Generally, such vibration diversion and diffusion is best achieved when the thickness of the side wall housing gradually decreases toward the closed end of the housing. Further, an outer diameter of the housing side wall may gradually decrease toward the closed end of the housing to improving ringing and bandwidth properties.
