  • Patent number: 6064873
Abstract: A single two-ended echo canceller is provided that uses an adaptive FIR filter to model the impulse response of the echo path and cancel the echo originating from the PSTN side of the connection, and a non-linear processor controlled by input signal levels to cancel the echo originating from the mobile phone side of the connection. Since the linear processing function is not used for cancelling echoes of the mobile phone side, the algorithms directed to estimating and cancelling echoes on the two sides of the connection can be executed in a single DSP, with all of the attendant advantages.

  • Patent number: 6064888
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for determining the distance between a radio receiver (RX) and a radio transmitter (TX) by uplink time measurements, whereby uplink messages are transmitted by the transmitter (TX) and used primarily for position determination. In one embodiment, the uplink messages are intra-cell handover messages if the transmitter (TX) is a component of a mobile radio terminal which is operating in accordance with an existing TDMA standard. In a second embodiment, the uplink messages are a new type of message transmitted in time slots not used by the mobile radio terminal and preferably, also not used by other mobile radio terminals in the system, if the transmitter (TX) is a component of a mobile radio terminal which is operating in accordance with a new or emerging TDMA standard. The evolving GSM radio air-interface standard is an example of such a TDMA standard.

  • Patent number: 6061559
Abstract: A method and system used in a mobile telecommunications network for reconnecting at least one of a plurality of low priority calls that were disconnected due to preemption by high priority call(s) are disclosed. The system includes a queue for arranging the plurality of low priority calls. The system further includes a controller coupled to the queue for determining whether a traffic channel was located within a predetermined amount of time for use by the low priority call. The traffic channel may be located within one of a plurality of neighboring cells or within a current cell. If the traffic channel was located within the predetermined amount of time, then the controller will remove the low priority call from the queue and automatically reconnect the disconnected call using the located traffic channel.

  • Patent number: 6058302
Abstract: A mobile cellular communications system and method are disclosed, which limit access of private network cells only to mobile subscribers of those private networks. In cells belonging to the public network, only information about the public cells is broadcast on the public system information control channels. This public cell information is thus the only cell information that the non-subscribers' terminals are able to receive. When a mobile terminal belonging to a subscriber of one or more private networks surfaces in a public cell, the public network transmits a radio link control message to that mobile terminal, which contains information about the candidate cells for selection associated with the private network(s). The private network transmits system information via the private cell to a subscribing mobile terminal about the private and public cells' neighboring cells.

  • Patent number: 6056737
Abstract: A single use pen-like marking device is disclosed which is useful for marking skin to form marks which persist for a least a week and which are invisible under ambient light but fluoresce under ultraviolet light and to reveal cracks and caries in teeth which are difficult to see under normal light and for visualizing plaque on teeth without leaving a stain visible under normal light. It has a flexible housing with a dry wick-type marking nib in one end which communicates with the interior of the housing and which is impregnated with a skin fluorescing furanone. Inside the housing is a sealed fragile glass tube therein which contains a solvent for the furanone. The marking device is activated by bending the housing until the glass tube breaks and releases the solvent, which saturates the marking nib and dissolves the furanone therein.

  • Patent number: 6058303
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the activity of a mobile subscriber in a GSM-based PLMN system from an Intelligent Network (IN) telecommunications system comprising several Intelligent Peripherals (IPs) connected to a Service Control Point (SCP) over a network. The detailed technique is automatically initiated when the Service Control Point (SCP) of an IN system attempts to reach a mobile subscriber and fails. In the first phase, the SCP arms an SMS-IP using a dummy SMS message. Upon the detection of renewed subscriber activity of a mobile subscriber who was previously inactive or unreachable, a PLMN triggering notification is generated. In this second phase, the PLMN transmits an alert to the SMS-IP which in turn notifies the SCP.

  • Patent number: 6055846
Abstract: The focus of this paper is to introduce a novel method for calibrating natural gas flowmeters. This new method can accommodate very large flow rates and it avoids common problems associated with current techniques for meter proving. In this method, the amount of gas accumulated in a vessel of fixed volume is determined by measuring the change in capacitance of the vessel with respect to time. Because the accumulator has a fixed volume the problems inherent with the mechanical motions involved in volumetric provers such as bell provers, piston provers and ball provers are eliminated. Accurate measurements can also be made in larger vessels than would be feasible for gravimetric provers, especially for in situ calibrations. Along with avoiding the fundamental problems associated with current provers, initial studies indicate that accuracies of .+-.0.1% are possible, even for flow rates in large pipelines.

  • Patent number: 6055888
Abstract: A wrench device with a bearing-type clutch for selectively and reversibly providing a unidirectional rotational force and an opposite unidirectional independent rotation. The wrench device includes one or more bearings disposed in an irregular space between a primary wall of a primary body and a secondary wall of a secondary body. The space has tapering or narrowing sections in which the bearings bind to fixedly engage the primary and secondary bodies as the primary body rotates in a first rotational direction. A pin or toggle dislodges a bearing so that the primary body may rotate freely in a second, opposing rotational direction while another bearing binds the secondary body to the primary body when said primary body is rotated in the first rotational direction. Alternatively, a bearing is selectively positioned in the space to cause the primary and secondary to rotate together or independently depending on the positioning of the bearing and the rotational direction of the primary body.
