  • Patent number: 6092464
Abstract: A method of screen printing raised three-dimensional images, for example, corporate logos, on printable textile and/or non-textile substrates involves the use of a stencil attached to the print side of the print screen. The stencil is made from a pre-fabricated, photosensitive thick film having a precision controlled thickness. The print screen is coated with a photosensitive emulsion, and the combination of the print screen and the attached photosensitive stencil blank are exposed to UV light from metal halide lamps to harden the non-exposed emulsion and stencil material. The screen and stencil are thereafter washed to remove the non-hardened emulsion and stencil material, thereby creating openings in the screen coating and stencil material to form a three-dimensional image volume. Pigmented paste is screen printed through the one or more image openings in the coated screen and the associated one or more image volumes in the stencil to form a three-dimensional image on the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6092911
Abstract: An emergency vehicle includes an extendable ladder and a compartment for storing a kit containing a source of light and a cable. When the vehicle arrives at the scene of an emergency, the ladder is partially extended, and the kit is removed from the compartment. The source of light is then suspended from the ladder, near the distal end of the ladder, and the cable is connected between the source of light and a source of power. The ladder is then extended and elevated. The method provides light in hard-to-reach places, regardless of whether the accident scene already is lighted. The kit preferably includes cable support hangers which aid in suspending the cable along the length of the ladder. When the emergency work is complete, the components of the kit may be removed and stored in the vehicle. In another embodiment, the kit includes a unitary frame which holds a generator and a plurality of lamps. The kit does not interfere with the operation of the vehicle, and substantially extends its capability.

  • Patent number: 6089985
Abstract: A fastener sorting apparatus is configured to mount on a fastener forming machine and to shunt bent workpieces through a wastegate of the fastener forming machine when the bent workpieces contact a detection ring. The detection ring is electrically-conductive and is coaxially aligned with a part gripper of the forming machine. The ring has an inner diameter slightly larger than an outer diameter of a series of workpieces to be sorted. Either the ring or the gripper are moved so that a workpiece held in the gripper passes through the ring. If the workpiece is bent beyond acceptable limits it will contact the ring, closing an electrical circuit. Closing of the circuit causes a workpiece diverter to shunt the workpieces through the wastegate.

  • Patent number: 6087833
Abstract: An apparatus and method for passively determining the depth and thickness of a subterranean geologic formation bearing hydrocarbons, e.g., oil and/or gas, or commercially important ore deposits, e.g., precious metals. The apparatus has an antenna to pick up extremely low frequency signals naturally emanating from the Earth's surface. In a preferred embodiment, the received signal is amplified and filtered. The signal is then modulated onto a carrier wave. The modulated signal is then filtered to eliminate one of the sidebands, for example, the lower sideband. An oscillator generates a tuning frequency which is then beat against the filtered, modulated signal in order to tune to a particular frequency. The oscillator sweeps through the range of frequencies, e.g., in the upper sideband portion of the filtered, modulated signal.

  • Patent number: 6083544
Abstract: An improvement to existing meals-ready-to-eat (MRE) rotational retort processes reduces the time that the food is exposed to heat. This is achieved by adding a pulsed electric field process (PEF) to the MRE process to aid in inactivating microorganisms in the food. The food may then be exposed to heat only long enough to obtain the desired sensory characteristics. Because the PEF inactivates the microorganisms in the food, the food does not have to be exposed to high temperatures for a prolonged time. As a result, the food is sterilized without losing the desired sensory characteristics or nutritional value. Moreover, the process may easily be incorporated into existing MRE production processes.

  • Patent number: 6082926
Abstract: A novel energy absorbing module is described which is relatively inexpensive, easy to make and provides for a relatively consistent crush resistance along its length when impacted axially. The module is made up of a generally cylindrical metal member which is formed from a roll of sheet metal that is wound into a tube having a spiral cross-section. A layer of spacer material, such as polyethylene foam, is placed adjacent the sheet metal so that the winds of the spiral are separated from one another. The energy absorbent module of the present invention provides a relatively constant and predictable level of crush resistance which makes it particularly suitable for such applications as an insert for a guardrail end treatment or other crash barrier. The module is formed by rolling a sheet of metal, or similar material, and the spacer sheet into a tubular or cylindrical form. A portion of one end of the module is then crushed slightly by impact loading.

  • Patent number: 6085153
Abstract: The present invention provides a new analysis based on Differential Spectral Topographic Analysis (DISTA). Using data from the spectral methods known in the art, DISTA is based upon the normalization of the spectra to a fixed topographic space, creating a set of spectral forms, and the summation of the absolute differences in topography between one or more reference spectra and the test spectra taken at different magnitudes of the perturbing parameter. This method allows for a sensitive estimate of the fraction of form A and form B of an entity of interest. This method also allows for the calculation of apparent free energy from the conversion of the entity of interest from a first to a second form where appropriate, and in the alternative, calculation of a fraction of structural changes.

  • Patent number: 6085342
Abstract: A power-on reset circuit with glitch sensing capabilities is formed as part of the same integrated circuit chip containing other logical circuits. A port included in the integrated circuit chip enables a power-on reset signal generated by the integrated power-on reset circuit to be output from the chip and applied to other chips installed in a single chip or multi-chip electronic system. The power-on reset circuit compares a capacitor stored reset voltage to a reference voltage and outputs the power-on reset signal when the reset voltage falls below the reference voltage. Storage of the reset voltage by the capacitor is controlled by a glitch sensor which detects changes in voltage provided by a power supply in excess of a given threshold and, in response thereto, triggers a capacitor discharge. This causes the reset voltage to fall below the reference voltage, and the power-on reset signal to be output.

  • Patent number: RE36764
Abstract: A device for removing obstructions from vessels or small openings in the body, comprising a rotatable ablator tip which is guided to the obstruction in a reduced diameter configuration, expanded and rotated to remove the obstruction, and contracted to remove the device from the body. The variably expandable abrasive tip coil in one embodiment of the invention is actuated by a piston means disposed within the coil. A pair of collars is attached to the ends of the coil, and the piston effects relative longitudinal axial movement of the collars and, hence, the respective ends of the coil tip. When the ends of the coil tip are so moved with respect to one another, expansion and contraction of the diameter of the coil tip results. In another embodiment of the invention, the expansion tip coil is actuated by an expandable and contractible bellows means disposed within the coil, instead of the piston means.
