  • Patent number: 5895079
Abstract: For threaded connections for oil and gas applications using tubular goods of composite materials, substantially greater make up torque can be applied, with significantly improved tensile and sealing properties, by incorporating stress-relieving conical gradient sections adjacent each end of the threaded section of the composite member. Joining each of two composite tubular members to a single double ended male member having complementary surfaces, circumferential distortion is not concentrated at the end regions of the threaded sections but is distributed, relieving stresses and allowing increased makeup torque to be applied, greatly expanding the useful parameters of fiber reinforced tubular products.

  • Patent number: 5894978
Abstract: A cutter for cutting flexible material held on a roll thereof. The cutter has a frame that mounts a drop in roll of flexible material and a drop in tensioning roller in an open end of the frame. The cutter has a cutting area that is generally enclosed and houses a plurality of slitting knives and a tear off cutting blade. The cutting area has an entrance and exit slot for the material with the slitting knives slitting the material as it passes through the cutting area. The slit material can exit through the exit slot. After a predetermined length has been pulled forwardly relative to the cutting blade the slit material can be cut into pieces by tearing it against the cutting blade. A length determining gage allows pieces of a precise length to be cut. The material is pulled through the cutter by a set of feed rollers contained within the cutting area.

Abstract: A method and system for computerizing learning, response, and evaluation is provided. The computerized system comprises a central processing unit and related memory and storage capacity to operate a learning, response, and evaluation system stored in a computer program. The learning, response, and evaluation system comprises an authoring portion and a presentation portion. Through the use of intuitive interface elements, the authoring portion allows an author to quickly and easily construct a lesson from a pool of relevant data. Due to the design and capabilities provided, the authoring portion reduces the time it takes for an author to learn how to construct a lesson and reduces the time it takes to construct the lesson. Data can be organized into pages which are presented to the user and pages which are hidden from the user. The presentation portion allows a user to view and learn the information contained in a lesson.

  • Patent number: 5891443
Abstract: Immortal avian T lymphocyte cell lines which produce and secrete immune lymphokines are disclosed. These cell lines may be produced from T cells recovered from fowl which have been hyperimmunized in vivo. The activated T cells are first exposed in vitro to a mitogen effective for secondary stimulation thereof, and then virally transformed to produce an immortal cell line. When cultured in vitro, the cell lines produce and secrete immune lymphokines which may be administered to fowl to increase their resistance to infections.

  • Patent number: 5892802
Abstract: A synchronization frame is first formatted and transmitted in accordance with the Global System for Mobile (GSM) 08.60 specification. After an initial synchronization procedure is accomplished between a transcoder/rate adaptor unit (TRAU) and a particular base transceiver station (BTS) serving a mobile station, a modified GSM 08.60 frame is thereafter used to transport greater user data payload across the established communications link. The modified frame replaces the synchronization bits included in the GSM 08.60 formatted data frame with user data to increase data payload from the conventional 13.5 Kbit/s to a more desirable 14.4 Kbit/s without altering the standardized 16 Kbit/s transmission rate supported by the IWF and the BTS.

  • Patent number: 5892149
Abstract: A heat transfer indicating device for monitoring and/or measuring a flowing medium, especially a flow indicator and/or a flowmeter, with a preferably flexible component carrier (1), with electrical and/or electronic components (2) on the component carrier (1) and connected to one another to form a circuit, with a heating element (3), with temperature measuring element (4), with electrical connection (5) and with a housing. The flow indicator can be produced with relatively low cost, is relatively simple to mount, and can be easily re-opened again so that it can be repaired in case of a defect and the parts not affected by the defect can be re-used, by the fact that component carrier (1) is formed of two component carrier halves (1a, 1b) located on top of one another and between which the heating element (3) and temperature measuring element (4) are located.

  • Patent number: 5892434
Abstract: A system for sensing the manner of operation of an automotive vehicle and for generating feedback signals to the vehicle operator as a function of the manner of operation includes a pressure sensor connected to the brake pedal so as to generate a multi-state output signal as a function of the instantaneous pressure applied to the brake, and a plurality of acceleration sensors supported so as to sense the rate of change of the motion about different axes. The sensor output signals are all provided to a controller which compares their outputs to values stored in a table to generate one of a stored set of output values. An audio signal generator receives the output values and generates an audio feedback signal to the vehicle operator as a function of the status of the sensors. The system may also provide a signal to the vehicle engine to prevent operation of the vehicle when excessively erratic operation is detected.

  • Patent number: 5890074
Abstract: A modular unit having a telecommunications component, a switching circuit, and a headset link is adapted for connection with a host electronic device. The headset link of the modular unit communicates with a module link in a headset. The headset also contains earphones or a speaker, a microphone, and a control panel in electrical connection with the module link of the headset. The speaker, microphone, and control panel of the headset communicate with the headset link of the modular unit through the module link in the headset. The switching circuit of the modular unit controls whether the headset link of the module is in electrical connection with the telecommunications component of the modular unit or an electronic audio component of the host electronic device.

  • Patent number: 5886775
Abstract: An apparatus and method for imaging a surface of a target object that produces a three-dimensional image of the target object without mechanical contact from a hand-held, free-motion scanner. In one embodiment, the apparatus has a scanner that an operator manually moves about the target object substantially without restriction. A noncontact distance measuring device is attached to the scanner to measure the distance between the scanner and the target object without mechanically contacting the target object. Additionally, a position tracking system detects the position and orientation of the scanner within the position reference field without mechanically restricting the scanner. In operation, a computer is operatively coupled to the position tracking system and the noncontact distance measuring device to correlate position measurements of the scanner with corresponding distance measurements between the scanner and the target object.

  • Patent number: 5887249
Abstract: In a method for remotely establishing a cellular service account for a cellular radiotelephone within a cellular system, prompts for user input of account information are generated by the cellular system and sent to the cellular radiotelephone. The cellular radiotelephone provides the prompts for user input of the account information, accepts user input of the account information, and generates a data signal within the cellular radiotelephone in response to the user input of the account information. The cellular radiotelephone sends the data signal from the cellular radiotelephone to the cellular system, and the cellular system stores the account information to establish the cellular service account.

  • Patent number: 5884493
Abstract: When in operation, devices for telecommunications installed in rooms generate a considerable amount of heat. This takes place continuously, and a maximum temperature must not be exceeded. In order to obtain reserve time for an air cooling system having a reserve time system with a guaranteed low temperature level of the liquid for the reserve time system, an evaporator (2) for the air cooling system is provided with a liquid circuit (2b) which is connected with a liquid tank (7). Liquid is circulated continuously through the evaporator with the liquid circuit, where it is cooled by the cooling medium for the air cooling system, at the same time as the inside air is cooled by the same evaporator. The continuous cooling and circulation of the liquid in the tank ensures that there is always the coldest possible liquid available when the ordinary cooling system is not working.
