  • Patent number: 5850444
Abstract: A generic communications network provides an encrypted communications interface between service networks and their subscribers. When communications are initiated between a subscribing communications terminal and the generic network, the terminal compares a stored network identifier associated with a stored public key, with a unique identifier broadcast by the generic network. If a match is found, the terminal generates a random secret key, encrypts the secret key with the stored public key, and transmits the encrypted secret key. The generic communications network decrypts the secret key using a private key associated with the public key. The secret key is used thereafter by the terminal and the generic network to encrypt and decrypt the ensuing radio traffic. Consequently, the network can maintain secure communications with the terminal without ever knowing the terminal's identity.

  • Patent number: 5850391
Abstract: A mobile switching center (MSC) not equipped with the necessary hardware/software devices or modules communicates with a Shared Interworking Function node to provide an Interworking function (IWF) service to a particular mobile station. Control data associated with the requested IWF service are transported from the serving MSC to the SIWF node using basic and supplementary Integrated Service Digital Network User Part (ISUP) signals. Such control data are encapsulated into optional parameters within the transmitted ISUP signals and transparently transported from the serving MSC to the SIWF telecommunications node.

  • Patent number: 5849301
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing an immunogenic construct comprising activating at least one first carbohydrate-containing moiety with CDAP, CTEA or pNPC, and covalently joining the activated first moiety to a second moiety. Preferably, the first moiety is a polysaccharide and the second moiety is a protein. Immunogenic constructs are prepared by this process using either direct or indirect conjugation of the first and second moieties.

  • Patent number: 5846309
Abstract: A coarse particle kaolin clay is provided having an average Stokes equivalent particle diameter of about 4.5-6.0 microns, a BET surface area of about 8-11 m.sup.2 /g, and preferably having a median Malvern particle size of about 9.0-10.5 microns as determined by laser light-scattering measurement and a high aspect ratio preferably of about 12-14 as determined by Sphericity Model calculations. The coarse particle kaolin clay provides low viscosity build, good reinforcement properties and excellent surface finish qualities as a filler in thermoset composite materials, such as polyester molding compounds, and also provides excellent pigmenting properties in paints and industrial coatings.

  • Patent number: 5845569
Abstract: A turret style printing machine (10) includes a first tier (16) of pallet supporting members (14), a second tier (20) of printing head supporting members (18) and a third tier (24) of printing head supporting members (22). One can thus selectively move either a second tier member (18) or a third tier member (22) into alignment and registration with a first tier member (14). A uniform registration is further provided ensuring the second third tier supporting members consistently align with the first tier supporting members (14). This expansion increasing the number of stations is accomplished without necessarily increasing the required floor space or system diameter.

  • Patent number: 5847656
Abstract: An electronic combination lock includes a combination lock having a dial with no markings thereon. Rotation of the dial drives a generator which produces electrical pulses. The voltage pulses serves as a power source for the electronics of the lock. The lock also includes a security feature to disable the lock if the combination dial is stopped between dial rotations for a period of time which indicates dialing by an automatic dialer.

  • Patent number: 5845741
Abstract: An escape apparatus for installation within an upper storey of a building in the proximity of an emergency exit opening, such as a window, comprises a foldable ladder carried by a stage which is mounted on a vertically positioned fixed mounting frame for sliding and pivoting movement together with the folded ladder between a retracted position against the mounting frame to an extended position of use in which the stage projects through the emergency exit opening and in which the ladder may be slid along the stage and unfolded at a leading edge of the stage to form a rigid ladder extending downwardly from the stage outside the building. The escape apparatus may also comprise a child carrier guided by the ladder for controllably lowering a baby or small child down the ladder and an automatically opening folding rescue platform for providing a temporary place of safety for escapes unable to reach the ground while they wait for rescue.

  • Patent number: 5847336
Abstract: Light-emitting diodes are positioned directly under each key of a multi-key flexible pad of a keypad assembly. Each of the light-emitting diodes is disposed within a cavity formed in the lower surface of a respective key whereby all of the light emitted by the diode is transmitted directly into the key. In one embodiment, the light-emitting diodes are mounted on a flexible film disposed between the flexible pad containing the keys and a flexible sheet having a plurality of raised domes. In a second embodiment, the light emitting diodes are mounted on the upper surface of a printed circuit board. The keypad assembly addresses the problem of low light transmission efficiency through light guides, or the use of individual optic fibers to illuminate each of the keys. Furthermore, the keypad assembly, by the elimination of light transmitting structures within the keypad assembly, enables the design of thin-section telecommunication instruments.

  • Patent number: 5844121
Abstract: A method of inhibiting the production of mycotoxins of fungus, such as aflatoxin-producing and sterigmatocystin-producing fungi, in plants susceptible to contamination by such mycotoxins consists of introducing into the susceptible plant a gene encoding for lipoxygenase pathway enzyme of the mycotoxin. Exemplary of the lipoxygenase pathway enzymes are soybean lipoxygenase, allene oxidase, hydroperoxide lyase and hydroperoxide dehydratase. The resulting transgenic plant demonstrates substantial resistance to mycotoxin contamination of such fungus. Plants which are substantially resistant to mycotoxin contamination of Aspergillus spp. are further obtained by incorporating into mycotoxin susceptible plant antisense genes for the 9-hydroperoxide fatty acid producing lipoxygenases.

  • Patent number: 5843068
Abstract: A form fitting diaper comprises a backsheet having a front section, a back section, and a crotch section, and has bonded thereto an absorbent layer. The diaper further comprises a pair of elastic side panels bonded between the front and back sections of the backsheet and define therewith a circumferentially continuous and elastic waist, and further defining leg openings. The side panels having substantially unidirectional elasticity whereby the panels are elastic in the circumferential direction and substantially inelastic in the direction perpendicular thereto. The side panels being of composite construction comprising an elastomeric layer with a unidirectionally elastic nonwoven layer bonded thereto. The composite combines the barrier and strength properties of the elastomeric layer with the unidirectional elasticity and fabric-like properties of the nonwoven layer. The unidirectional elasticity of the composite is useful for putting on and taking off the diaper.
