Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a cellular mobile radio telephone system for initially setting a time alignment parameter in a mobile station. The method comprises the steps of estimating an optimal time alignment parameter for use during communication on a new traffic channel of a desired base station based on information available before the communication on the traffic channel is established, sending the estimated time alignment parameter to the mobile station, and setting the time alignment value in the mobile in accordance with the estimated time alignment parameter. An apparatus for initially setting a time alignment parameter is also provided according to a preferred embodiment.

  • Patent number: 5353723
Abstract: The transplant head of the transplanter has an upper plate with four pinholes spaced at the corners of a square of a determined width. A lower plate is adjustably spaced beneath the upper plate and has four pinholes located at the corners of a square of a lesser width than the upper plate pinhole spacing. Four transplant pins extend between the upper and lower holes such that when the upper plate is brought closer to the lower plate by a pneumatically activated mechanical linkage, the pins converge within a seedling plug. Additional pins and pinholes provide for transplanting of an array of seedlings. A pneumatic actuator is connected to the lower plate and is adapted to elevate the transplant head with engaged plug. A carriage is driven by a pneumatic actuator to position a growth pot beneath the engaged plug. A computer controller causes the plug to be lowered into the soil of the growth pot after which the mechanical linkage may be activated to space the plates to disengage the pins from the plug.

  • Patent number: 5355514
Abstract: A base station (BS1) in a mobile radio system has connection in a first cell (1) with a mobile station (MS1) on a two-way channel (K1) having two carrier frequencies. A base station (BS2) and a mobile station (MS2) in a second cell (2) remote from the first cell are mutually connected on the channel (K1) disturbing the connection in the first cell (1) through signals (F1, R1). The combined signal strength of the disturbing (F1, R1) and the home connection (K1) is measured. The signal strength of solely the disturbing connection (F1, R1) is also measured, the carrier frequency of home connection being closed down. The quotient between these signal strengths is a measure of connection quality. The stations (MS1,BS1) may include means for closing down their respective carrier frequencies when no information is transmitted, the receiving station then measuring the disturbing signal strength.

  • Patent number: 5351149
Abstract: An amplitude-shift-keyed (ASK) optical transmitter is described for generating an ASK modulated infrared signal from a light-emitting-diode (LED). The transmitter includes a DC powered microcircuit for generating an ASK modulation signal. A pair of mosfet devices are connected in series with one or more LED's between the mosfets. An oscillator signal used to operate the microcircuit is also employed as a carrier signal to activate one mosfet while the ASK modulating signal is coupled to operate the other mosfet. Input capacitances of the mosfets are used to tune the oscillator signal and smooth the leading and trailing edges of the ASK modulation signal. Several embodiments are described.

  • Patent number: 5351281
Abstract: A double open-ended sample holder for sample material for X-ray spectroscopic analysis including a cylindrical body containing the sample material and having top and bottom open faces. An analytic film is mounted tautly across the lower face, and a microporous film positioned across the upper face cell passes gases generated by X-rays striking the sample material but does not pass harmful particle materials contained in the cell. Upper and lower rings mounted to the cylindrical body secure the lower and upper films to the body. A handling support connected to the top securing ring provides a grip for a tool used in the process of remotely raising or lowering the sample holder relative to placement into or removal from an X-ray cassette. The handling support is spaced from the microporous film so that gases generated in the cell are allowed to escape across the microporous film at a maximum rate of evacuation.

  • Patent number: 5351317
Abstract: An interferometric tunable optical filter selects a predetermined wavelength or wavelengths from a wavelength division multiplexed signal. The optical filter splits an input signal into a plurality of waveguide branches. In each branch, the amplitude and phase of the signal can be individually controlled. The signals are then recombined. The resulting interference gives a wavelength dependent transmission spectrum that can be adjusted as desired.

  • Patent number: 5350740
Abstract: This invention relates to drilling fluid additives that suppress clay swelling within a subterranean well and to methods for controlling clay swelling during the drilling of a subterranean well. A trihydroxy alkyl amine is reacted with an alkyl halide or a water soluble quaternary amine to form a quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amine. The reaction products can also include condensed reaction products of quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amines. The quaternized reaction products are characterized by low toxicity and compatibility with anionic drilling fluid components. The products are added to water base drilling fluids which are circulated throughout a well. The drilling fluid additives and the method of controlling clay swelling provide for improved control of the rheological properties of drilling fluids along with increased environmental and drilling fluid compatibility.

  • Patent number: 5349806
Abstract: A feeding mechanism for a round hay baler is capable of feeding plastic sheet, netting, or alternatively twine by means of a single set of parallel feed rolls. The device includes a control mechanism which, upon sensing of a full bale having been formed within the baler, initiates a programmed control sequence beginning with driving of one roll for an incremental period of time. The driven roll engage netting, sheet or twine against the second idler roll and feeds the netting, sheet or twine into the bale forming mechanism for wrapping about the bale. Upon completion of the wrapping sequence, a special knife descends and cuts the twine or sheet of netting or plastic. The controller then resets the mechanism.
