  • Patent number: 5343070
Abstract: A mesa-type PIN diode and method for making same are disclosed. A diode made according to the present invention includes a junction formed in the top surface of the mesa-shaped structure, having an area that is less than (and preferrably, approximately half) the area of the top surface. A highly-doped, N-type conducting layer is formed in the side-walls of the mesa-shaped structure. The resulting diode is subject to greatly reduced charge carrier recombination effects and suffers from much less carrier-to-carrier scattering than conventional diodes. Thus, a diode made according to the present invention is capable of achieving much higher stored charge, lower resistance, lower capacitance, better switching characteristics, and lower power consumption than one made according to the prior art. Particular utility is found, inter alia, in the areas of high-frequency microwave and monolithic circuits.

  • Patent number: 5341579
Abstract: In a paper making machine a porous support belt travels together with the web over a drying cylinder and leaves the cylinder at a point of removal. A suction box provided in the region of the web removal has a suction zone which is defined by means of two yieldable sealing strips which extend transversely to the direction of travel of the web, and each is supported in a sealing strip holder. The distance between each sealing strip holder and the outer surface of the drying cylinder amounts to at least 30 mm, and each of the yieldable sealing strips has, in its normal condition of operation, such an inherent stiffness that the sealing strip remains substantially free of deformation in the event of a difference in pressure of 0.01 to 0.1 bar between the suction zone and its surroundings.

  • Patent number: 5340611
Abstract: In a process for the coating of a running web of paper or cardboard, provisions are that in a press gap formed between two rolls a coating substance applied in a very small quantity on the surface of the one roll is first pressed on the web leaving a very thin coat on the web which, however, covers all spots including the "mounds" of microroughness. Next, the second coat can be applied and dosed on the still moist first coat with the usual means. In the process, the first coat is preferably dosed on the shell of the first roll, by means of the peripheral grooves of a rotary doctor. The same may be performed also as regards the second coating on the web.

  • Patent number: 5341401
Abstract: A method of detecting the identity of a radio channel and to ascertain whether the channel is a control channel or a traffic channel, in conjunction with convolution decoding in a mobile radio receiver. Channel identification is effected without such complete decoding. Part of a data block is decoded in accordance with the Viterbi algorithm as though the block represented a control channel. If the metric obtained after a given number of nodes is smaller than a given number of threshold values, the channel is considered to be a control channel and is thereafter decoded as such a channel. If the metric is greater than the threshold value, the channel is decoded as a speech channel.

  • Patent number: 5339430
Abstract: In telecommunications switching systems, software is frequently modified, enhanced or replaced altogether by new versions. The implementation or integration of the new or revised software into the operational system must be accomplished in accordance with strict requirements for not disturbing the ongoing activities of the system. Therefore, it is desirable that the system not be halted while the change to the new software is made. Rather, the preferred approach is to be able to replace software modules with new versions on the fly, during system operation. The smooth modification made possible in the disclosed system allows such changes with minimal disturbance to ongoing activities by dynamically linking and binding software modules during execution.

  • Patent number: 5336066
Abstract: A balloon pump includes a cylinder having an outlet end and a piston adapted to reciprocate within the cylinder. One-way outlet and inlet valves are associated with the pump for allowing air to exit the cylinder outlet end only when the piston moves toward the outlet end and enter the cylinder only when the piston reciprocates away from the cylinder outlet end. An elongated piston drive member or base is connected at one end to the piston with the other end extending out of the cylinder at the end opposite the cylinder outlet end. A biasing arrangement acts between the cylinder and the piston to bias the piston away from the outlet end of the cylinder. With the pump positioned vertically and supported on the elongated piston drive member, the biasing arrangement raises the cylinder to perform a return stroke so that the pump may be operated simply by pushing down on the cylinder.
