    Abstract: An automotive vehicle drive unit assembly which is located near the sides of a vehicle includes a first driving axle shaft, a second driving axle shaft, a first gear box, a second gear box, a first electric motor, and a second electric motor. The first driving axle shaft drives a first wheel hub of the vehicle and the second driving axle shaft drives a second wheel hub. Together the first and second driving axle shafts define an axis of rotation about which the first and second wheel hubs rotate. The first gear set drives the first wheel and the second gear set drives the second wheel. A first electric motor is mounted in an angular relationship relative to the axis of rotation and drives the first gear set. A second electric motor is mounted in an angular relationship relative to the axis of rotation and drives the second gear set. A plurality of electric motors can be used to drive each wheel hub.

    Abstract: A parking braking system for a brake in a vehicle wherein, upon moving a parking brake selector to a park position, the brake is arranged to be mechanically locked or latched into place by means of a variable position park latch mechanism which is adapted to co-operate with an operating member of the brake so as to set the park load on the brake at a desired level. The parking braking system includes a control system which has a brake level determining means (134) to determine the brake load level at which the brake is to be parked and a control means (136) for controlling the actuation of the latching mechanism, or a combination of several latching mechanisms, to selectively maintain that brake load level during a parking phase. In order to determine the park load level to which the brake should be applied in a given situation, there is provided a static mode 1 which generates a signal representative of the static condition of the vehicle or a static compensation signal.

The electronic control unit, upon receiving various suspension related inputs, transmits the electrical signals having the varying signal strength to the unitary flexible member to change the shape thereof in order to vary the stiffness of the flexible member and thus control the suspension of the vehicle.

The rotor members are spaced a first distance in the non-servo position, and the rotor members are spaced a second distance which is greater than a first distance in the servo position. The movable rotor member includes a second inner surface with a plurality of second pockets adjacent to the first inner surface and a friction surface spaced from the second inner surface. A plurality of balls are arranged between the first and second pockets with at least one of the first and second pockets being ramped.

    Abstract: A method of fabricating a driveline assembly including the steps of inserting a first member within a second member, heating the first member to a temperature greater than that of the second member and inserting both members into a die. The inner surface of the die includes an interlocking torque transferring profile. Fluid pressure is applied to the inner diameter of the inner member to expand both members into the profile on the inner surface of the die. The inner and outer members are then removed from the die and cooled such that both members are at a common temperature. Because the inner member was at an elevated temperature, and thereby expanded a greater amount than the outer member, cooling of the members results in a clearance between the members that provides for relative axial movement between the inner and outer members.

The on board engine control unit stores the vehicle operation history with respect to an individual driver and may also contain navigational information. In the event that the on board engine control unit indicates a violation of hours of service regulation, the vehicle may be prevented from being started by the driver. The smart card is also used for vehicle access and may be used for conventional fuel purchase.

The sensor is mounted to rotate with the wheel assembly and the magnet is mounted to the axle, at a position eccentric to or radially offset from the axle axis. The sensor is mounted to the wheel assembly in radial alignment with the magnet such that rotation of the wheel assembly aligns the sensor for magnetic interaction with or responsiveness to the magnet once per revolution of the wheel assembly.

    Abstract: A vehicle drive unit assembly includes an axle extending between a pair of wheels, a braking system for slowing and stopping the vehicle, and a retarding system located on the axle for assisting the braking system. The axle has a housing and an axle shaft that receives input from an engine and driveshaft to drive the wheels. The braking system includes a brake member supported on each of the wheels and an actuator for selectively moving the brake members between an unactuated position and an actuated position. The braking system produces a braking force to slow or stop the rotation of the wheels when the brake is in the actuated position. The retarding system includes a plurality of magnets supported for rotation with the axle shaft and an inductor held fixed to the axle housing. The retarding system produces a retarding force as the magnets rotate with respect to the inductor to slow the rotation of the wheels when the actuator moves the brake members to the actuated position.

The bushing can be removed from the bushing retainer without removing the retainer from the brake spider. Further, the bushing assembly incorporates strategically located grooves that significantly increase lubricant flow to and around the camshaft.

A central processor receives the weight signal and transmits the weight signal to a vehicle driver. An electronic control unit, in communication with the steering angle sensor, determines a first desired turning angle for one of the wheels and a second desired turning angle for the other one of the wheels based on the desired amount of turning of the vehicle and the direction of the turning of the vehicle. The second desired turning angle may be the same as or different from the first desired turning angle. Independent turning mechanisms are coupled to each of the wheels and receives control signals from the electronic control unit for controlling the turning angles of each of the wheels independently of the other wheel.

The washer seal is preferably made of a metal washer bonded to a flexible material. The bushing assembly supports the camshaft in the cam braking system. The bushing washer seal is preferably generally ring-shaped having a first ring-shaped flat section defining a bore along a longitudinal axis, a second ring-shaped curved section contiguous with and spaced radially from the first section, and a lip that extends longitudinally from the second section. In a preferred embodiment, the lip extends from the washer seal at an angle from the washer seal second section. In an alternative embodiment, the lip extends from the washer seal at an angle from the washer seal first section. The bushing assembly includes a radially outer surface. The lip of the washer seal deforms radially outwardly to engage the bushing assembly radially outer surface, thereby providing an axial locating feature.

    Abstract: A variable engagement mechanism for a dual wheel assembly is provided. The mechanism includes a spindle having a drive axle defining a rotational axis. A first wheel hub is supported on the spindle and coupled to the drive axle for being rotatably driven about the rotational axis. A second wheel hub is arranged adjacent to the first wheel hub and is rotatable relative to the first wheel hub about the rotational axis. Friction members are provided between the first and second wheel hub. An actuator forces the friction members into engagement with one another to permit transfer of torque between the wheel hubs. The actuator may be operator controlled or integrated with a braking or other vehicle control system. In this manner, the first and second wheel hub may be selectively locked together for increased traction and/or braking. A differential assembly may be used between the first and second wheel hubs so that both wheels may be driven at all times while being permitted to rotate relative to one another.

The differential controls rotational speed and torque supplied to the first and second axle shafts. The differential clutch is used to selectively lock the axle shafts together when the vehicle experiences unfavorable road conditions. An actuating mechanism is used to control the differential clutch. The actuating mechanism includes a stationary piston actuated by a fluid force and a rotating piston actuated by the stationary piston. This stationary piston moves the rotating piston causing the rotating member to displace a volume of fluid to actuate the differential clutch.

    Abstract: An inter-axle differential assembly for a tandem drive axle set is disclosed that permits a rear drive assembly and a forward drive assembly to have the same input axis. The forward drive assembly includes a hollow pinion gear. An inter-axle differential assembly receives input from a driveline connection and transfers this input to the hollow pinion gear and to a through shaft that extends through the hollow pinion gear. The hollow pinion gear drives a main differential assembly that in turn drives a forward axle. The through shaft extends toward a tear drive assembly and provides input to the rear drive assembly. The rear drive assembly utilizes a rear pinion gear to drive a rear differential. The rear differential in turn drives a rear axle. Thus, the present design permits a common axis to be shared by the input to the forward drive assembly and the input to the rear drive assembly. In addition, the present design eliminates the traditionally required helical gears from the forward drive assembly.
