Abstract: One or more shock absorbers may be disposed between the layers of an optical assembly, which may be used in a head-mounted display (HMD) device for the display of augmented and/or virtual reality (AR/VR) content. In one example, an optical component positioned adjacent to a waveguide in the optical assembly may have one or more shock absorbers positioned on the surface which faces the waveguide. The shock absorbers may either touch the surface of the waveguide or may not touch the waveguide but rather have a gap (i.e., a stand-off shock absorber). The shock absorbers may take the form of, e.g., a pillar, a cone, an inverted cone, an inverted pillar, a spring, a double helix, a three-dimensional mesh, a strap, or a high aspect ratio 3D mesh tower.

  • Patent number: 12248204
Abstract: A reflective polarization rotator based on a twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal (LC) configuration may be optimized for achromatic performance in both bright and dark states by compensating wavelength dependence of polarization transformation by the TN LC layer. At linear achromatic input polarization, the compensation aims to provide a circular achromatic polarization at the reflector, which guarantees the achromaticity of the 90 degrees polarization rotation on double pass. The compensation takes care to preserve linear polarization at the reflector when the LC device is driven to a vertical LC director configuration. Such an approach ensures that the performance of the polarization rotator is achromatic in both driven and undriven states of the LC device.

  • Patent number: 12249092
Abstract: In one embodiment, a computing system accesses a set of 3D locations associated with features in an environment previously captured by a camera from a previous camera pose. The computing system determines a predicted camera pose using the previous camera pose and motion measurements generated using a motion sensor associated with the camera. The computing system projects the set of 3D locations toward the predicted camera pose and onto a 2D image plane associated with the camera. The computing system generates, based on the projected set of 3D locations on the 2D image plane, an activation map specifying a subset of the pixel sensors of the camera that are to be activated. The computing system instructs, using the activation map, the camera to activate the subset of pixel sensors to capture a new image of the environment. The computing system reads pixel values of the new image.

  • Patent number: 12248346
Abstract: A method by a computing system associated with a set of disjoint devices that includes at least one wearable device includes receiving a request to perform a task. The method further includes determining, based on sensor data associated with the set of disjoint devices, a thermal-constraint differential for each device of the set of disjoint devices. The method further includes determining a plurality of workload assignments needed to be performed to accomplish the task. The method further includes distributing, based on the thermal-constraint differentials of the set of disjoint devices, the plurality of workload assignments to one or more devices of the set of disjoint devices to satisfy one or more power or thermal constraints associated with each device of the set of disjoint devices. • Patent number: 12248806
Abstract: In one embodiment, an operating system of a computing system determines, by an application instance manager of the operating system, that a first instance corresponding to a first application is to be activated according to an instance database managed by the operating system, where the first application includes several application components, including the first instance and a presenter. The application instance manager invokes the first instance and the presenter, the presenter being managed by the first instance. The operating system determines that the presenter is configured to present data obtained by a data provider, the data provider being one of several application components of a second application. The data provider accesses data from a data store and populates a dataset defined by the second application. The presenter of the first application generates a user interface to present the data from the dataset defined by the second application.

  • Patent number: 12242672
Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure can trigger an action based on a motion detected by an artificial reality (XR) device, such as a head-mounted display (HMD). The XR device can display an XR experience to a user. While displaying the XR experience, the XR device can detect a physical interaction with the XR device using one of more sensors (e.g., sensors of an inertial measurement unit (IMU)). The physical interaction can generate a movement profile captured by the one or more sensors. The XR device can identify the physical interaction as a particular motion (e.g., one or more taps on the XR device) by applying a machine learning model to the movement profile. In response to identifying the particular motion, the XR device can trigger an action on the XR device (e.g., activating pass-through on the XR device).

  • Patent number: 12242666
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure are directed to an interface for receiving input using multiple modalities in an artificial reality environment. The interface can be a virtual keyboard displayed in an artificial reality environment that includes characters arranged as elements. Implementations include an artificial reality device/system for displaying the artificial reality environment and receiving user input in a first modality, and a controller device for receiving user input in an additional input modality. For example, the artificial reality system can be configured to receive user gaze input as a first input modality and the controller device can be configured to receive input in a second modality, such as touch input received at a trackpad. An interface manager can process input in the multiple modalities to control an indicator on the virtual interface. The interface manager can also resolve character selections from the virtual interface according to the input.

  • Patent number: 12242587
Abstract: An administered authentication system can authenticate an artificial reality device using an authorization record between a user account and an artificial reality device. In some implementations, the authorization record is created in response to activation of a user account-specific key sent to a user-supplied contact, where an artificial reality device identifier was provided with the user-supplied contact. In other implementations, the authorization record is created in response to activation of a user account-specific key provided to the artificial reality device as a code, where activation of the key includes adding an artificial reality device identifier to a key activation message. In yet other implementations, the authorization record is created in response to an application associated with a user account activating an artificial reality device-specific key, with an artificial reality device identifier, that is provided via the artificial reality device.
