  • Patent number: 6900399
Abstract: An electrical switch assembly for actuating an electrical circuit by closing at least one pair of conducting contacts in a sliding manner is disclosed. The assembly includes a contact carrier within a switch housing, a spring attached to the carrier that biases the carrier in an electrical circuit open position, a slot connected to the carrier that receives a force transfer member, and a force transfer member that is insertable into the slot and transfers a force applied by a switch operator to an angled wall portion of the slot. The angle of the wall portion is preferably 45-degrees relative to the axis of travel of the force transfer member. In operation, when the force transfer member is inserted into the slot and pushes against the angled wall, the carrier is displaced approximately orthogonal to the insertion direction of the force transfer member to move the contacts in the carrier from an electrical circuit open position to an electrical circuit closed position.

  • Patent number: 6860745
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a modular clockspring to be used in automobile steering columns that allow modular parts of the clockspring to be modified without the need to alter the design of the entire clockspring. The clockspring is composed of at least six modules, a cover module, a housing module, an inner diameter (ID) connector module, an outer diameter (OD) connector module, a locking module, and a flat electrical cable module. The modular nature of the clockspring allows a single generic clockspring to be used in various steering columns. Minor differences in mounting styles, connector styles or the number of circuits within the differing steering columns can be accommodated with minor changes to the relevant modules without having to redesign the entire clockspring.

  • Patent number: 6844541
Abstract: A position sensor for determining the angular position of a steering wheel. The shaft of the steering wheel is connected to a code disk and turn ring of the sensor so that when steering wheel is rotated, the coded disk and turn ring are also rotated. The code disk is a flat circular disk having a series of cut-outs or bits around its perimeter. A light emitting diode shines a light through the cut-outs and is read by a photo detector which determines the angular position of the code disk. The turn ring is fitted on the outside of the code disk and rotates in a hypocycloidic circle so that for every full revolution of the code disk, the turn ring rotates through a smaller angle. The turn ring is placed over a series of Hall sensors to determine the number of revolutions of the code disk.

  • Patent number: 6676452
Abstract: A squib connector is provided that allows detection of an improper connection within a squib connector prior to incorporation within an airbag mechanism. The squib connector includes a male squib connector and a female squib connector. Positioned within the female squib connector is a disengaging member. The disengaging member may be, for example, a spring or the like. The disengaging member prevents the male squib connector and female squib connector from having an electrical connection if the male squib connector and female squib connector are not properly interlocked. The disengaging member performs this function by forcing the male squib connector away from the female squib connector at such a distance that no electrical connection is possible. The improperly connected squib connector may then be more easily detected. Thus, the squib connector improves the efficiency and reliability of the airbag mechanism.
