    Abstract: Novel diphenyl ether compounds of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a nitro group, process for preparing the same and diphenyl ethers of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, alkenyl group or alkynyl group, and Y represents an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, or the group ##STR3## wherein R' is defined as R above by reacting 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl-3,4-dinitrophenyl ether with a compound of the general formula:RYH (III)wherein R and Y have the same meanings as defined above, respectively. The latter diphenyl ether compounds of the general formula (II) are useful as herbicides.

    Abstract: A tubular polymerization reactor comprising a feed opening for a polymerizable material at one end portion, a withdrawal opening for the resultant polymer at the other end portion, a tubular reaction space within the reactor extending from said feed opening to said withdrawal opening, and a rotary conveying member disposed within the reaction space and extending therealong with some clearance from the inner wall surface of the polymerization reactor; characterized in that(i) the length-to-diameter ratio of the tubular reaction space is about 20 or more, and(ii) the rotary conveying member is of a tubular coil-like shape;and a process for polymerization using the aforesaid tubular polymerization reactor.

    Abstract: A polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate composition comprising polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanates, a part of the isocyanate groups contained therein being substituted by a carbamate group, or said polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanates having the substituted carbamate group and polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate not having carbamate group. The total amount of the carbamate groups contained in the composition is up to 10 percent by mole based on the total amount of isocyanate groups contained in the composition. The composition is useful for the preparation of rigid polyurethane which has many industrial applications. A process for the preparation of the composition is also disclosed.

C. of 1.0-2.4 dl/g, a melt index (MI.sub.B) of 0.5-20 g/10 min., a density of 0.910-0.940 g/cm.sup.3, and a melting point of 115.degree.-130.degree. C., with the proviso that the MI.sub.A /MI.sub.B ratio is 0.15-4.0, said layers (B) being in direct contact with the two sides of said layer (A) and laminated thereto.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation of 2,2'-bis(4-substituted phenol)sulfides which comprises reacting a 4-substituted phenol with sulfur dichloride in a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature of from -10.degree. to 40.degree. C. in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. For example, 2,2'-bis(4-cumylphenol)-sulfide, i.e. 2,2'-bis(4-.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethyl benzyl-phenol)monosulfide, which is a novel compound can be prepared by reacting 4-cumylphenol with sulfur dichloride in benzene at a temperature of from 0.degree.to 10.degree. C. in the presence of zinc chloride.

    Abstract: Reinforcing material for hydraulic substances such as cement, mortar, concrete or the like and a method for producing it. The reinforcing material consists essentially of an elongated product of a synthetic resin having protrusions on its surface and which was obtained by extruding and subsequent stretching. The method comprises mixing a polyethylene having a melt index of not more than 0.01 at 190.degree. C. under the load of 2.16 Kg with a polyethylene having a melt index of more than 0.01 thereby to obtain a polyethylene mixture having a melt index of 0.01 to 10, melt-extruding the polyethylene mixture under such conditions as to give an extruded product having a jagged surface and stretching the extruded product, whereby the reinforcing material having protrusions on its surface is obtained. Hydraulic substances with the reinforcing material incorporated therein is useful for production of concrete panel, concrete pipe, concrete channel, tetrapod, sleeper, tunnel, etc.

    Abstract: Phenolic resin compositions comprising a polymeric substance having a phenolic OH group such as phenol resins, and a rubber having an epoxy group and an epoxy equivalent of 500 to 30,000 such as butadiene copolymers, acrylic copolymers, chloroprene copolymers and urethane copolymers are provided. These resin compositions exhibit improved properties having overcome the drawback of brittle properties intrinsic of conventional phenolic resins, and also exhibit cold resistance; hence they are used as molding materials, laminating materials, casting materials, binders, etc. Further, molding resin compositions having improved solvent-resistance and metal insert properties are provided.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing rubber modified styrene resins comprising the 1st step of polymerizing a styrene monomer in the presence of a butadiene polymer and an organic peroxide at the ratio of 100 parts by weight, 3 to 15 parts by weight and 0 to 0.01 parts by weight respectively until the polymerization yield of the styrene monomer becomes 2 to 5 time more than the weight of the butadiene polymer, and the 2nd step of polymerizing the full amount of polymer mixture from the 1st step and 0 to 200 parts by weight of the fresh styrene monomer in the presence of 0.01 to 0.9 parts by weight of the organic peroxide until the polymerization yield of the styrene monomer becomes at least 1.5 times more than that of the 1st step. The molded product of the resin thus obtained shows an improved impact strength at the portions wherein polystyrene molecule orientation tends to occur.

Preferably, the polymerization is continuously carried out by bulk or solution polymerization while the reaction mixture present in the polymerization zone is kept in such a mixed state as to make it substantially homogeneous.

    Abstract: An arrangement is described for controlling a winch used in mining machinery, wherein the direction of operating a winch and speed thereof are controlled by changing the position of a control element of a fluid pump for supplying a fluid into a fluid pressure recirculating circuit, by a device incorporating the fluid pressure recirculating circuit and a control circuit. The arrangement is characterized by feeding ON/OFF signals for giving instructions of a position to a control element, by a bi-polar pulse generator. Pulse from the bi-polar pulse generator are fed to a reversible BCD counter by pressing push buttons, and comparing a voltage generated via a D/A converting circuit from the reversible BCD counter with a voltage generated from a potentiometer coupled to the control element according to the position of the control element to be selected, thereby controlling the instruction of the position of the control element; and setting a speed of the winch by pressing the push buttons.
