  • Patent number: 6000727
Abstract: A copyproof document includes a paper document substrate, a disc having a primarily holographic first face facing away from the substrate and a second face with permanent pressure sensitive adhesive engaging the substrate, and mechanical intertwining between the substrate and disc so that they are substantially inseparable. The mechanical intertwining enables the materials thereof become substantially inseparably intertwined, the permanent adhesive also acting to insure inseparability. Typically the parameter of the disc will be a mechanically intertwined with the substrate while at the center there is little or no mechanical intertwining so that the holographic activity of the first face is not significantly occluded. Unique identifying indicia (e.g. consecutive numbers or bar coding) may also be provided on the disc, and application of the discs to a document may not be practiced without security authorization and access (by key, computer, or the like).

  • Patent number: 6002415
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for "field effect imaging" of moving substrates, such as webs of paper. Non-conductive, non-magnetic toner having approximately a 5-20 micron mean particle size is electrically charged to a level of at least about 8 micro Coulombs/gram and then a first roller with a conductive surface is brought into operative association with the electrically charged toner so that toner particles adhere to the surface. The toner particles are preferably maintained in an electrostatic fluidized bed, and charged by a corona element in the bed. An array of pin or stylus primary electrodes are selectively energized or de-energized to provide no-write or write condition, respectively using a computer to switch the electrodes into or out of operative connection to a source of electrical potential.

  • Patent number: 5981013
Abstract: A web of labels, particularly linerless labels, is produced which has specially formed perforation lines that are neither too strong or too weak. Each perforation line comprises alternating cuts and ties, including a cut to tie ratio of 0.18.times.0.008 to 0.012.times.0.008, and between 30-58 cuts per inch. Where permanent adhesive is used for the linerless labels, each perforation line comprises 45-58 cuts per inch, and has a percent of hold of 45-58%, with each cut having a thickness of about 0.028 inches. When repositional adhesive is used each perforation line comprises 30-45 cuts per inch, with a percent of hold of 25-35%. At least one, and typically substantially all, of the perforation lines have substantially V or U-shaped enlarged end terminations to facilitate dispensing of the labels. The perforations are formed by applying a perforation pressure of about 500-600 lbs.

  • Patent number: 5972478
Abstract: Label assemblies are produced which obscure confidential information that is part of each label assembly, while allowing ready exposure of the confidential information in a tamperproof manner. A web of label components having a face ply with a top surface, underlying pseudo adhesion layers, an underlying image ply, an underlying adhesive layer, and a bottom release paper carrier ply are acted upon to non-impact print a security pantograph and readable indicia on the web face ply, and with an impact element generate a confidential information image on the image ply, which image is not visible from the face ply. Labels are die cut out of the web and matrix material formed by die cutting is removed so that the web then includes a bottom release paper carrier ply with a plurality of spaced labels, each having a confidential information image. The labels may be applied to a mailer or other substrate.

  • Patent number: 5968996
Abstract: A silicone release composition having a non-gloss, i.e., matte finished, surface and a linerless label incorporating the silicone release composition. The release composition includes a crosslinked silicone-based polymer having microparticles of a polymeric wax at least partially embedded therein. The polymeric wax may be polytetrafluoroethylene, polypropylene or other polyolefin, or a hydrocarbon-based wax. The microparticles of polymeric wax cause incidental light to scatter upon reflection, giving the release composition surface matte appearance. This makes the release composition particularly useful for linerless labels on which bar coded information will be printed. Also, a method for producing linerless label stock. The method includes mixing an uncured silicone material with microparticles of a polymeric wax. The mixture is coated onto a substrate and exposed to UV radiation to cure or crosslink the silicone around the microparticles of wax.

  • Patent number: 5958174
Abstract: A card package assembly and method of manufacture thereof allow simple and inexpensive production of desirable products, particularly useful for telephone debit cards. A web of card stock is imaged on both first and second faces with indicia (preferably variable and non-variable), and the faces are spot coated with plastic at spaced locations equal to the length of card package ultimately separated from the web. A card is formed from or out of each of the spot coated plastic locations, by die cutting, or with lines of weakness such as perforations. The form is narrower at the card, and adhesive patterns outside the card portions hold other panels of the package together once folded over to sandwich the card between other panels. The cards may be produced from a web one package wide, or from a web two or even more packages wide. A bang tail is preferably provided connected to the card, and of the same width, with a perforation separating the bang tail from the card and coupon indicia imaged on the bang tail.

  • Patent number: 5949438
Abstract: A raster image processing system and method that can keep up with the fastest high resolution printers now available can process images "on the fly"--that is, generate images from compact input representations so rapidly that printing can occur substantially in the same real time as raster image processing of input data. This system is capable of automatically "screening" data relating to the images so that the various gray scales or color levels are correct for a contone printing process. Different print engine control modules can be replaceably plugged into and out of the system to allow it to be used with different types of print engines/intelligent imaging systems--including high speed, high resolution color printing engines. A high speed data cache and associated array disk drive provide high speed throughput of data into the system. The disk array may, for example, store a library of high resolution graphics that can be accessed "on the fly" as needed in response to the input data stream.

  • Patent number: 5933177
Abstract: An erase unit for an ion deposition web-fed print engine includes a plenum extending the width of the electrostatic image on the image cylinder and defining an ionization chamber with the image cylinder surface. The plenum has first and second electrodes separated by a dielectric. Upon application of a time-varying potential having a frequency of 0.2 to 50 mHz across the electrodes, ionization occurs, causing an ion current flowing in relation to the image surface until the image surface and the biasing electrode are at the same potential, thus erasing any residual electrostatic image on the cylindrical surface. By providing a DC biasing voltage, the residual electrostatic image may be erased when equalization occurs, with the image cylinder maintaining a pre-charged potential.

  • Patent number: 5904968
Abstract: Paper stock (e.g. about 3 mils thick) is highly calendered to form a paper label substrate having first and second faces, with indicia imaged on the first face, a coating of adhesive release material over the imaged indicia, and a pressure sensitive adhesive on the second face. The release coating may be silicone release coating, and the adhesive permanent acrylic adhesive. The paper stock label substrate desirably has a moisture content of between about 6-8%, the release coat and adhesive sealing the moisture within the paper stock. The pressure sensitive adhesive is applied to a blow molded plastic article while the article has a temperature of above 120.degree. F. The article is cooled so that the label conforms to the surface of the article without visible flaws (such as lifted edges, air bubbles, or puckering).

  • Patent number: 5893958
Abstract: In the manufacture of integrated labels it is desirable to apply pressure sensitive adhesive in a continuous manner, yet it is undesirable for active adhesive to be on one or more edges of the form since active adhesive can interfere with nip rollers upon entering a laser or other non-impact printer, or can otherwise interfere with proper operation of the printer. By using an adhesive--that is de-tackified by direct exposure to a sufficient type and dosage of electromagnetic radiation (such as a hot melt adhesive de-tackified by applying about 3000 mJ/cm.sup.2 total dosage of ultraviolet radiation)--that problem may be avoided. Apparatus for producing integrated labels with the adhesive at one or more edges being de-tackified may include a first conveyor for conveying sheets (either in stacked or single sheet form) in a first direction, and at least one ultraviolet radiation source mounted adjacent a side of the conveyor parallel to the first direction.

  • Patent number: 5877788
Abstract: A fluid (liquid or water) wash is used to clean the front surface of an ink jet printer cartridge. In addition, a nozzle plate that overlies the nozzle shields the nozzle array from the splatter of ink. In ink jet printers, ink droplets are propelled from an array of orifices in a nozzle plate in the printer head. During the ink droplet ejection, ink is sprayed or deposited around the orifices. The ink droplets are deposited on a paper web adjacent the nozzle and mist from the droplets drifts back to coat the face of the nozzle plate. Some ink seeps behind the nozzle plate onto the array of nozzle orifices. The ink coating attracts particles that tend to clog the nozzle orifices. The ink coating is washed away by fluid streams that flow over the nozzle surface and in some embodiments flow over the nozzle orifices themselves. The fluid may be water, ink or other liquid that is channelled across the nozzle surface, or the fluid may be an air stream that blows across the nozzle surface.
