Patent number: 8834597Abstract: A method of fabricating metallic Cu nanowires with lengths up to about 25 ?m and diameters in a range 20-100 nm, or greater if desired. Vertically oriented or laterally oriented copper oxide structures (CuO and/or Cu2O) are grown on a Cu substrate. The copper oxide structures are reduced with 99+ percent H or H2, and in this reduction process the lengths decrease (to no more than about 25 ?m), the density of surviving nanostructures on a substrate decreases, and the diameters of the surviving nanostructures have a range, of about 20-100 nm. The resulting nanowires are substantially pure Cu and can be oriented laterally (for local or global interconnects) or can be oriented vertically (for standard vertical interconnects).Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2012Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: The United Stated of America as Represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)Inventors: Jin-Woo Han, Meyya Meyyappan

Patent number: 8725456Abstract: The prognostic tool disclosed here decomposes the problem of estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of a component or sub-system into two separate regression problems: the feature-to-damage mapping and the operational conditions-to-damage-rate mapping. These maps are initially generated in off-line mode. One or more regression algorithms are used to generate each of these maps from measurements (and features derived from these), operational conditions, and ground truth information. This decomposition technique allows for the explicit quantification and management of different sources of uncertainty present in the process. Next, the maps are used in an on-line mode where run-time data (sensor measurements and operational conditions) are used in conjunction with the maps generated in off-line mode to estimate both current damage state as well as future damage accumulation.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2009Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: The United States of America as Represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)Inventors: Bhaskar Saha, Kai F. Patent number: 8680749Abstract: A novel full piezoelectric multilayer stacked hybrid actuation/transduction system. The system demonstrates significantly-enhanced electromechanical performance by utilizing the cooperative contributions of the electromechanical responses of multilayer stacked negative and positive strain components. Both experimental and theoretical studies indicate that for this system, the displacement is over three times that of a same-sized conventional flextensional actuator/transducer. The system consists of at least 2 layers which include electromechanically active components. The layers are arranged such that when electric power is applied, one layer contracts in a transverse direction while the second layer expands in a transverse direction which is perpendicular to the transverse direction of the first layer. An alternate embodiment includes a third layer.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2009Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignees: National Institute of Aerospace Associates, The United States of America as represented by the Administration of NASAInventors: Tian-Bing Xu, Xiaoning Jiang, Ji Su
