    Abstract: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents transport of molecules larger than 500 Daltons from blood to brain. Receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT) facilitates transport across the BBB of specific molecules that bind receptors on brain endothelial cells that form the BBB. An insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R)-binding antibody or fragment thereof is identified that transmigrates the BBB by RMT. The antibody or fragment is used to deliver a cargo molecule across the BBB, wherein the cargo molecule may be a therapeutic or detectable agent. The antibody is a camelid VHH, prepared by immunizing a llama with a 933-amino acid IGF1R polypeptide. Humanized forms of the camelid VHH are also generated.

    Abstract: The invention discloses an apparatus and method for use with Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) systems that can be applied to the real time analysis of various materials. The invention, in one aspect, provides a layer-by-layer method to remove the undesired coating layer of a material in which a pulsed laser is coupled with high speed scanning optics. To prepare the surface for LIBS, (i) a pulsed laser beam is scanned over an area of the surface to ablate the surface coating layer; (ii) the laser parameters are changed (i.e. pulse duration is made smaller) and the area scanned again to polish the surface; and (iii) the laser parameters are changed again (i.e. pulse duration is made smaller yet again) and the area scanned again with spectrometric analysis of the plasma plume created by the laser (i.e. LIBS is performed).

    Abstract: A method of generating a random number that involves applying pulses of energy to amplify a quantum mechanical vacuum fluctuation to generate one or more macroscopic fields having one or more physical properties (e.g. phase or energy) that are random and measurable, and, measuring at least one of the physical properties to obtain a value for the physical property, the value of the physical property being a random number. Measuring the phase of a Stokes signal generated in a transient Raman scattering process is one way of generating the random number as the phase of the Stokes signal is random. This method can produce random numbers faster than prior art methods as the real numbers generated can be converted to binary to produce more than one random bit and the measurement process itself is faster permitting more rapid data collection rates and more rapid turn-on times.

    Abstract: A technique for acquiring target's coordinates for industrial dimensional metrology involves a target that serves both as a 2D contrast target and a 3D contact target, and a metrology tool. The target has proximal and distal surfaces, at least some of which being primarily flat and facing a common normal direction. At least 3 mm separate the proximal and distal surfaces in the normal direction. Reflectivity factors of the distal and proximal surfaces differ by at least 20%. Risers connecting pairs of the proximal and distal surfaces are sufficiently undercut so that none of the risers are in view at nominal viewing angles. At least two reference edges are defined where risers meet proximal surfaces. The tool has meeting features for registration with the edges and primarily flat surfaces, in at least two registered positions, to permit a retroreflector of the tool to acquire coordinates the target centre.

    Abstract: A technique for joining parts of incompatible metals involves cold spraying a 150-900 micron thick layer of a metal compatible with the second part onto the first part, and friction stir joining the parts by lap welding while keeping a tool of the FSJ tool at least 300 microns away from the first part (less layer) throughout the joining, to avoid damaging the cold spray to first part interface, and formation of intermetallics. Improved fatigue resistance is shown. A sealant can advantageously further improve fatigue resistance.

    Abstract: A vibration reduction (VR) human support has exactly two paths to ground in each degree of VR: one provided by respective displacement actuators (DAs) for active VR, the other by one or more elastomeric damping bodies (EDBs). These paths extend from a frame for carrying a support structure for a live human, to a grounding for fixing the VR system in a vibrating environment. Each EDB is composed of a material having a dynamic Young's Modulus of 0.1-2.5 MPa, and a resilience test rebound height less than 40, and is positioned between the grounding and frame to provide elastic restorative forces and damping in each of the respective directions. The use of EDBs simplifies construction, and allows for a more compact arrangement, without reducing VR efficiency.
