    Abstract: Starch is phosphorylated by a virtually pollution-free, continuous process whereby an aqueous reagent solution of a tripolyphosphate, orthophosphate or pyrophosphate salt or a mixture thereof is sprayed onto a moist starch cake on a rotary vacuum filter in an amount sufficient to achieve efficient impregnation of the starch cake without losing significant levels of salt to the effluent. In a preferred embodiment, the reagent solution contains alkali metal tripolyphosphate salt and is obtained by diluting a concentrated solution thereof. The thus-impregnated starch is subsequently dried and heat-reacted by known procedures to produce an orthophosphate starch monoester.

    Abstract: Improved storage-stable anaerobic curing adhesive compositions useful as anaerobic adhesives and sealants are prepared by first mixing a polymerizable acrylate ester monomer, an inhibitor for free radical polymerization, a chelator, and at least an effective amount of an accelerator system consisting of an N-substituted sulfonamide and an aromatic tertiary amine. The resultant homogeneous mixture is thereafter maintained at a temperature of at least about 20.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to provide the composition with anaerobic curing properties and a specified minimum amount of active oxygen. In one embodiment, the mixture is stirred at a temperature of 45.degree.-80.degree. C. for 10-30 hours. In another embodiment, the mixture is maintained at an elevated temperature without stirring.

    Abstract: PET bottle assemblies are prepared from a PET bottle which has been blow-molded and joined to a HDPE base cup with a hot melt adhesive which consists essentially of a blend of: (1) a block copolymer selected from the class consisting of: (a) A-B-A block copolymer where A is a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and B is either a conjugated diene or a rubbery mono-olefin and (b) a teleblock copolymer comprising molecules having at least three branches radially branching out from a central hub, each said branch having polystyrene terminal blocks and a butadiene segment in the center; (2) at least one tackifying resin which serves to extend the adhesive properties of the system; (3) at least one stabilizer; and (4) at least one wax or oil diluent.The resultant assemblies are characterized by bonds or joints which possess an unusual combination of excellent low and high temperature adhesion and flexibility as well as high bond strengths.

An exemplary acid chelate used as stabilizer is prepared from boric acid and pyrogallol.     Abstract: An improved latex binder for nonwoven webs comprising an acrylate- and/or vinyl acetate-based copolymer containing 0.1-10% by weight of 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate is prepared by employing in combination with the copolymer 0.2-10% by weight, on latex solids, of anionic surfactant and 0.3-15% by weight, on latex solids, of nonionic surfactant in selected relative proportions and by adding to the copolymer 1-40% by weight, on latex solids, of a water-soluble salt. The resultant binder is characterized by being stable to coagulation at room temperature but coagulable at a temperature between 40.degree. and 85.degree. C. In the preparation of nonwoven fiber material, a nonwoven web is impregnated with the copolymer latex binder, heated to a temperature of within 40.degree. and 85.degree. C. sufficient to coagulate the binder within the web and thus prevent migration, and finally dried to form a chemically bonded, nonwoven fiber material in sheet form.
