Patent number: 4957087Abstract: An apparatus for use in an internal combustion engine operable on either of gasoline fuel and gasoline-alcohol fuel blend. The apparatus includes an alcohol concentration sensor for sensing the alcohol concentration of the fuel to be delivered to the engine, and an oxygen sensor sensitive to the oxygen content in exhaust gases discharged from the engine for producing an air/fuel ratio feedback signal. A difference of the air/fuel ratio from the stoichiometric value is calculated based on the air/fuel ratio feedback signal for a closed loop air/fuel ratio control. A correction factor is used to correct the amount of fuel delivered to the engine so as to provide fuel enrichment during high engine load conditions. In the event of failure of the alcohol concentration sensor, the amount of fuel delivered to the engine is determined with the alcohol concentration being set at a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1989Date of Patent: September 18, 1990Assignee: Nissan Motor Company, Ltd.Inventor: Tadaki Ota

Patent number: 4899710Abstract: A system and method for detecting and determining knocking in an internal combustion engine in which various kinds of signals (engine vibrations, engine revolution speed, opening angle of a throttle valve, crank angle, ignition crank angle, and so on) are weighted by means of weight vectors so as to form a knocking decision signal. The knocking decision signal is compared with a reference signal so as to determine whether the knocking is occuring. The correctness or incorrectness of the determination result is determined on the basis of a highly accurate knocking detecting information provided by means of an external test device. The weight vectors are corrected in a direction in which the percentage of correct answers increases under the various engine operating conditions. The weight vectors thus corrected and learned are used to carry out highly accurate knocking detection under varying engine operating conditions.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1988Date of Patent: February 13, 1990Assignee: Nissan Motor Company, Ltd.Inventor: Hiroshi Takahashi
