  • Patent number: 4689244
Abstract: A method of ultrasonically treating a fibrous strand for subsequent use in high speed filament winding operations. The strand, composed of a multiplicity of filaments such as glass or carbon, is initially coated with a silane-type binder which is dried onto the surface of the filaments. The strand is then passed at a high speed through a bath of thermosetting resin, and while submerged in the resin is subjected to ultrasonic energy. The ultrasonic energy increases the rate of interaction of the binder and resin, thereby increasing the wetting rate of the individual filaments. This permits saturation of an individual strand or a group of strands with the resin in a much shorter contact time and guarantees removal of all entrained air in the bundle. At the same time, it provides a more stable resin-fiber bond after curing.

  • Patent number: 4685624
Abstract: An electric motor driven coffee grinder is turned on by manually activating an on/off/start switch when a bag is in position to receive ground coffee under a discharge chute and automatically turned off when the bag is removed. The grinder motor is controlled by both the manual on/off/start switch and by a switch which is actuated by a pivotally mounted lever responsive to the presence and absence of a bag under the discharge chute. This lever is designed to assume a switch-off position when no bag is present and is pivoted to a switch-on position when a bag is present.

  • Patent number: 4686020
Abstract: In electrochemically machining individual oversize blades of an integral bladed gas turbine engine rotor, opposed cathodes are initially offset in an electrolyte chamber relative to a selected machining position with the rotor outside the chamber skewed at an angle relative to the final position of the cathodes in the electrolyte chamber. The rotor and electrolyte chamber are then relatively moved in a vertical direction to position an individual blade to be machined in a workpart machining position in the chamber and concurrently one cathode is moved in a direction toward one side of the blade and the other cathode is moved in two other different directions, one toward the blade from the opposite side of the blade and the other transverse thereto, to position the cathodes in aligned relation on opposite sides of the blade at the machining position with blades adjacent the individual blade to be machined received in pockets in the cathodes without contact.

  • Patent number: 4685425
Abstract: A water heater having improved efficiency. The water heater includes a tubular member that is mounted in an opening in the side of the tank and extends generally horizontally across the tank. The tubular member defines a combustion chamber and a fuel burner is located within the combustion chamber. The outer end of the tubular member communicates with the atmosphere and air is drawn into the tubular member and mixed with fuel to provide a mixture which is ignited. The waste gases of combustion are discharged from the inner end of the tubular member into a heat exchanger which is located in the tank beneath the tubular member, and the hot waste gases being discharged from the combustion chamber and passing through the heat exchanger transfer heat to the water in the tank. The heat exchanger is connected to a stack and a blower is mounted in the stack downstream of the heat exchanger and serves to draw the waste gases of combustion from the combustion chamber through the heat exchanger to the stack.

  • Patent number: 4683701
Abstract: A sterilization apparatus for sterilizing the interiors of paperboard containers, wherein such apparatus is operative prior to the container being mounted on a mandrel of a mandrel assembly on which the container bottom closures are formed, closed and sealed. This is accomplished by providing nebulizing means for communicating a suitable sterilant fog through and onto the inside surfaces of the carton blank from the time that it is removed from a magazine and while being opened into a four-sided tubular shape, thereby greatly increasing the total interior sterilizing time available prior to the container being filled downstream, as compared to conventional sterilization processes which are operative after the bottom panels of the carton have been closed and sealed. Heated air is supplied to each mandrel of the mandrel assembly and applied to the interior of the container while the container is mounted thereon.

  • Patent number: 4684585
Abstract: A rechargeable, electrochemical generation apparatus and method has bipolar nickel-zinc electrode cells in a stacked, serially connected configuration for providing improved reliability and charge-discharge cycling capability. The apparatus employs a rotatable container having mounted therein a plurality of the electrode cell assemblies. An electrolyte solution is circulated, preferably according to a pulsed circulation, through the electrolyte cells. The electrode cells have an anode and a cathode electrode element, and each element has a substantially planar surface in contact with the electrolyte solution. The cells are mounted so that the planar surfaces of the electrodes align with the radial direction of the centrifugal force created by rotation of the container. The container, and hence the cells, are rotated to create centrifugal forces on the order of one hundred times the pull of gravity at the outer rims of the cells.

  • Patent number: 4683098
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing the waste area in a mold for an article molded from a heat-fusing material by a powdered vinyl process, has a mold box disposed adjacent the backside of a mold surface for controlling the temperature over respective first and second areas of the mold surface. The waste area elimination is accomplished by isolating and insulating the section of the mold defining the waste area. A kerf is cut into the mold around the waste area to isolate the area. The kerf is filled with castable silicone to insulate the waste area from the heated segments of the mold. To obtain the coating, the mold is filled with powdered vinyl and the excess material is removed from the mold by dumping the plastisol from the mold into a return tank.

  • Patent number: 4683014
Abstract: A process is claimed for removing the residual tensile welding stresses in the inner layer of the weld metal and the heat-affected zone of steel piping elements that have been butt-welded to each other end-to-end by means of a circumferential weld. The process involves mechanically introducing circumferential compressive stresses in the piping elements by applying a radial load inwardly on a section of at least one of the piping elements away from the weld such that the distance from the midplane of the section of the piping element upon which the radial load is applied to the weld midplane is equal to about two to about 12 times the thickness of the piping element upon which the radial load is applied. The distance from the edge of the section of the piping element upon which the radial load is applied that is adjacent the weld to the weld midplane is at least equal to about one-half the thickness of the piping element upon which the load is applied.

  • Patent number: 4680980
Abstract: A drive mechanism for imparting intermittent movement to an output member. The drive mechanism includes a rotatable input member which operates through a crank to move a beam with oscillatory or reciprocating movement. The beam is interconnected with a one-way overrunning clutch associated with the output member so that oscillatory movement of the beam is transmitted to the clutch. The clutch is designed such that rotation of the clutch in a first direction will cause the clutch to engage the output member to rotate the output member, while the clutch is freely rotatable with respect to the output member in a second direction. A resilient member, such as a compression spring, interconnects one end of the beam and the clutch and if the output member encounters an excessive load, oscillation of the beam in the first direction will compress the spring to provide overload protection for the drive. A second overrunning clutch can also be associated with the output member and is fixed against rotation.

  • Patent number: 4681205
Abstract: A displaceable inclined hoist has conveyor cars which can be moved up and down along two tracks by cable lines driven by windlasses, where the tracks together with the windlasses are located on a support construction, which is mounted in the region of its upper end around a horizontal axle on a displaceable support structure. The support construction can be pivoted in the perpendicular plane with the aid of a drive where the pair of tracks, which have different track gauges, lie one above the other in their middle region and lie in one plane in their end regions. The pairs of tracks lying one above the other, together with the support construction, have a separation distance from each other which provides clearance for the passage of the conveyor cars.
