Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making chlorinated hydrocarbons. A mixture is prepared of a hydrocarbon or partially chlorinated hydrocarbon from C.sub.18 to C.sub.30 and either benzotrifluoride or parachlorobenzotrifluoride in an amount sufficient to liquefy the mixture at the chlorination temperature. The mixture is heated to a temperature of about 50.degree. to 100.degree. C. and sufficient chlorine gas is passed therethrough in the presence of UV light to form a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is about 60 to about 80 wt. % chlorine. One part by weight of the composition is added to at least two parts by weight per part of a C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 monohydric alcohol, which results in the precipitation of the chlorinated hydrocarbon. The precipitated chlorinated hydrocarbon can be removed from the composition by, for example, filtration.

A compound having the formula ##STR2## is sulfonated using at least 2 moles per mole of said compound of a sulfonating agent selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, and mixtures thereof, to produce a sulfonated compound. The sulfonated compound is chlorodesulfonated to produce a chlorobenzene, such as 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. Preferably, the starting material is ortho-dichlorobenzene.
Abstract: The present invention provides an efficient process for the production of ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and vinyl chloride, in which some 1,2-dichloroethane (EDC) may also be produced, by reacting chlorine with ethane. The process is characterized by a conversion of ethane per pass through the reactor of at least about 50%, and a combined molar yield of ethylene and vinyl chloride of at least about 80% based on the ethane consumed. In accordance with this invention, there is provided a process for preparing ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and vinyl chloride by the reaction of ethane and chlorine which comprises:(a) providing a stream of ethane feed gas and a stream of chlorine feed gas;(b) preheating either said ethane stream only or both said ethane and chlorine streams;(c) thoroughly mixing said ethane and chlorine feed gases within about one second and at a molar ratio of ethane to chlorine of at least about 0.9:1.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of selecting a gas oil feedstock for use in manufacturing olefins. The feedstock is analyzed for the presence of benzothiophenes and is used to manufacture olefins only if it contains less than 50 ppm (as sulfur) of benzothiophenes. The concentration of benzothiophenes can be reduced by distilling the feedstock and removing the fraction of the feedstock that boils between about 45.degree. and about 60.degree. C. under reduced pressure of about 0.05 to about 0.1 mmHg. The concentration of benzothiophenes can also be reduced by passing the feedstock through a benzothiophene adsorber such as activated alumina or activated carbon.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making 3,5-diaminobenzotrifluoride from 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride. A solution of 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride in an alcohol is prepared. Separately, a slurry is prepared of a palladium catalyst on a suitable substrate, at least one equivalent of magnesium oxide per equivalent of 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride, sufficient hydrogen-donating reducing agent to reduce the 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride to 3,5-diaminobenzotrifluoride, and an amount of alcohol sufficient to make the slurry stirrable. The solution is added to the slurry with stirring at a rate that does not exceed the reaction rate of the 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride so that no unreacted 4-chloro-3,5-dinitrobenzotrifluoride accumulates in the slurry. The reaction mixture is heated at about 75.degree. to about 100.degree. C.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of determining a diffusion coefficient for a diffusant in a particulate. An inert gas is passed through a particulate containing the diffusant. A parameter that is proportional to the concentration of the diffusant in the inert gas is measured over a period of time and the slope of the linear portion of that relationship is determined and is multiplied by a constant.
