  • Patent number: 5416336
Abstract: A radiation image read-out apparatus which comprises an optical system for exposing a stimulable phosphor plate (1) which contains a latent radiation image to a stimulating beam, and a light collector (3) for directing the stimulated light generated in the phosphor plate (1) to a photodetector (4), for example, a photomultiplier tube. Such read-out apparatuses often have the disadvantage that sufficient light cannot be collected into the photodetector. This problem has been solved by using a shiny mirror tube as the light collector.

  • Patent number: 5386448
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for imaging a desired object by using a panoramic X-ray radiography apparatus equipped with exposure automatics, the apparatus including an X-ray generator (5), an X-ray tube (6), and an image receptor (8) with its holder (10). The detecting of the cone of rays (7) which has passed through the object, for the purpose of determining the exposure value, is carried out during the imaging at points positioned in each given case at different heights (17) in the cone of rays, by using one or more detectors (1). The positioning can be done either by moving the detector or by activating a certain detector in an arrangement of a number of detectors.

  • Patent number: 5386449
Abstract: The invention relates to a method used in the panoramic X-ray photography of a patient's set of teeth and a device for carrying out constant enlargement also in those spots (21) of the dental arch where the X-ray beam (12) is not perpendicular to the tangent (23) of the dental arch (20). Constant enlargement is achieved by selecting, on the film (13), a speed profile which follows the formula: v.sub.f =((A+B/A).times.v1.times.1/ cos (b), where v.sub.f is the speed of the film, v.sub.1 is a component of the propagation speed of the intersection of the X-ray beam and the spot to be photographed which is perpendicular to the X-ray beam, A is the distance between the focus of the X-ray source and the spot to be photographed, B is the distance between the spot to be photographed and the film, and b is the angle between the tangent (23) of the spot in question of the dental arch and the normal (22) of the X-ray beam.

  • Patent number: 5382699
Abstract: A method for the preparation of 3,4-dihydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde by reacting 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde with a strong nucleophilic agent which may be created by reacting an aromatic mercapto compound with a strong organic or inorganic alkali metal base such as lithium hydroxide. The reaction is performed at elevated temperatures using an aprotic polar solvent. It is preferably carried out in an inert atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5374538
Abstract: A method for detecting and quantifying mutans streptococci in the saliva of an individual is provided comprising the steps of(a) collecting a sample of saliva on the surface of a solid carrier strip;(b) introducing the sample on the solid carrier strip into a liquid medium which is selective for mutans streptococci and incubating in the liquid medium for a period of time sufficient to allow growth of visible colonies of mutans streptococci; and(c) detecting and counting colonies of mutans streptococci on the surface of the solid carrier strip. The invention further provides a kit for carrying out the method of the invention. The kit includes a solid carrier strip for obtaining a sample, an incubation vessel sized to accept the solid carrier strip, and a selective medium for growth of mutans streptococci.

  • Patent number: 5371775
Abstract: The invention relates to a panoramic X-ray photography apparatus having a rotatably mounted supporting arm (1) which has at one end an X-ray source (2) and at the opposite end an image receptor (3), in which case the object is placed between the X-ray source (2) and the image receptor (3) and the imaging is carried out by rotating the supporting arm. The idea of the invention is that a simple panoramic X-ray photography apparatus can also be used for tomography, since the object to be imaged, i.e. the denture, contains mainly vertical surfaces and a horizontal oscillating movement suffices for blurring them. An additional idea is that by moving the bearing shaft (4) of the supporting arm along a circle arc portion during blurring, the fulcrum can be shifted to outside the bearing shaft, thus eliminating certain limitations imposed by the mechanics of a conventional X-ray photography apparatus with respect to the area to be imaged and the location of the supporting arm.

  • Patent number: 5342756
Abstract: The degradation of type III collagen in the body is quantitatively determined by measuring the concentration of the liberated aminoterminal telopeptide region of the type III collagen molecule in the body fluid by a specific immunological method. This degredation product is resistant to further degradation and can thus be found in body fluids e.g. in serum or urine. For the determination the telopeptide region must be isolated from a human source e.g. from uterine leiomyoma.

  • Patent number: 5296618
Abstract: A method is provided for supplying the desired optical isomer of a derivative of epoxypropionic acid from a racemix mixture. A representative derivative of epoxypropionic acid is an ester of (p-methoxyphenyl)epoxypropionic acid. The racemic mixture initially is dissolved in carbon dioxide and the resulting solution is passed through a chromatographic column. The desired isomer is subsequently separated from the resulting eluant. In a preferred embodiment the chromatographic column is packed with microcrystallized cellulosetriacetate, cellulose-tris-(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate), or cellulose-tris-(p-methylphenylcarbamate).

  • Patent number: 5282391
Abstract: The invention relates to a pulling device for providing a smooth linear pulling movement. The device comprises a shaft (8) rotatable around its longitudinal axis, a pulling nut moving linearly on the shaft and driven by the rotational movement of the shaft and arranged to have the member to be pulled to be attached to, and a motor (9) providing the rotational movement of the shaft. The linear movement of the pulling nut is advantageously provided with the aid of pulling bearings set against the shaft (8) at a pitch angle. It is essential to the invention that the rotational movement of the motor (9) is transmitted to the shaft (8) through the intermediary of a flexible O-ring (25) between mutually nested parts (8, 22) associated with the motor and the shaft. The O-ring (25) forms between said parts (8, 22) a narrow contact surface closing a circular line, the purpose of which is to keep the rotational movement of the shaft as smooth as possible.
