Abstract: A method of and apparatus for controlling the position of an electrode in relation to the upper surface of a body of molten glass in an arc glass-melting furnace comprising providing an alternating current of constant effective magnitude to the electrode, sensing the effective voltage supplied to the electrode, determining if the sensed voltage is within a predetermined range of voltages, and modifying the position of the electrode if the sensed voltage is not within the predetermined range of voltages.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying granules to continuously moving strip asphaltic material comprises discharging granules onto tacky strip asphaltic material, continuously removing the non-adhered portion of the granules, sensing the amount of removed granules, and controlling the amount of granules discharged onto the asphaltic material in response to the sensed amount of removed granules.
Abstract: A method of recovering heat from furnace flue gas which comprises passing the hot gases into contact with high specific heat media and the media into contact successively, with combustion gases and glass batch.

Abstract: A pressure-sensitive adhesive is disclosed which is prepared by hot melt blending paving grade asphalt, a depolymerized virgin rubber, a terpene resin, and a vulcanizable, non-depolymerized styrene-butadiene copolymer. These adhesives are especially useful in forming membranes by coating one side of an asphaltic based coated reinforcement with these adhesives. They are useful for highway repair and maintenance purposes and for waterproofing and show good adhesion to cementitious, for example asphaltic concrete or Portland cement concrete, substrates.

Abstract: Apparatus for producing and collecting continuous glass filaments is provided comprising: feeder means for supplying a plurality of streams of molten glass to be drawn into filaments; means for applying a liquid to said filaments; a rotatable member adapted to wind said filaments in layers therearound and to draw said streams into said filaments; distribution means for supplying a plurality of streams of gas to at least partially dry the filaments wound around said member, said streams being directed into contact with the layers along the length thereof and over a portion of the arcuate periphery of the layers; and collection means for removing the moisture containing air from around the periphery of said layers of filaments, said collection means extending along the length of said layers and over a portion of the arcuate periphery of the layers.
Abstract: Controlling the level of molten material in a melting furnace is disclosed. The level of molten material is sensed downstream of the furnace and batch materials are choke fed to keep the total batch crust plus molten glass depth constant. This provides for simpler molten glass level control as melter power can be directly controlled in response to glass level.
Abstract: Off-size greenware (the product resulting from the initial gelation and filter pressing of calcareous and siliceous materials in an aqueous slurry) is recycled. The greenware is pulverized into a desirable size and combined with new calcareous and siliceous materials in the initial slurrying step. The slurry containing recycled greenware gels at an improved rate.
Abstract: A gel suitable for fiber formation is produced by reacting a Group II water soluble metal oxide with an aluminum chlorohydrate-organic complex to form a complex which is hydrolyzed and dried at elevated temperatures.
Abstract: A solar collector assembly is provided comprising an absorber means adapted to transfer heat to a fluid, a solar energy transmitting cover member, and a housing adapted to receive said cover member and to contain said absorber means, said housing having a bottom wall and foot sections adapted to receive an after-defined elastomeric mounting means; and elastomeric mounting means being fastened to said foot sections and being adapted to cooperate with a fastener means associated with a mounting bracket to movably secure said housing to said bracket.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for cooling a continuously moving strip of asphaltic material includes directing the asphaltic material into a plurality of loops, spraying an evaporative liquid onto the asphaltic material, evaporating the evaporative liquid by causing an array of air jets to impinge on the asphaltic material subtantially normally to the asphaltic material, sensing the surface moisture of the asphaltic material subsequent to one or more of the loops, and modifying the flow of evaporative liquid sprayed in one or more of the loops in response to the sensed surface moisture.

Abstract: A primer composition for use in the bonding of asphalts comprising the reaction product of an elastomer and a terpene resin. The primer composition of this invention can be used in the treatment of substrates to which asphalts are bonded to improve the bonding relationship between the substrate and the asphalt, such as in road-paving applications, roofing applications and the like.
Abstract: A gas to solid contacting apparatus comprising a chamber, at least one solid inlet conduit opening into the chamber, at least one gas inlet conduit opening into the chamber, the gas inlet and outlet comprising superimposed conduits.
Abstract: The feeding of batch material to a melting furnace is disclosed. The batch materials are choke fed to keep the total batch crust plus molten glass depth constant. The batch level keeps the arc electrodes submerged and helps promote arc stability and melting efficiency.
Abstract: The purpose of this monitor is to detect a failure in either the computer or the monitor itself. The computer supplies an output to the monitor which toggles at a preselected first frequency. The monitor includes a mechanism for sensing if the output of the computer is toggling at a frequency outside a preselected range of frequencies. A test circuit generates periodic test pulses and a clock circuit generates timing pulses. A latching mechanism changes from a first state to a second state in response to the sensing mechanism sensing that the first frequency of the computer is outside said preselected range. A bistable mechanism is coupled to the latching mechanism and generates a second frequency only if the latch mechanism is in its first state and if the test pulses and timing pulses are present at the bistable mechanism. The failure of the monitor to generate the second frequency indicates a failure of the computer or the monitor.
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for producing a mat of continuous glass filaments at increased throughput while maintaining desirable tensile strength characteristics by means of a fluidic distribution system employing diagonally opposed Coanda effect surfaces having extensions therefrom.
Abstract: A method of removing coatings from glass fibers in which the fibers are introduced into a bed fluidized by a gas at elevated temperatures, the gas converting the coatings to substances which leave the bed with the gases.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a laminated pack of mineral fibers comprising two sections, each having a forming conveyor, a plurality of sources of mineral fibers positioned to successively deposit the fibers onto the forming conveyor to form a layer of fibers, vacuum means to provide suction to the fibers through the forming conveyor, the suction being sufficient to force substantially all of the fibers down onto the forming conveyor, thereby crushing the bottom portion of the layer and forming a bottom surface which is smooth relative to the top surface, and means for joining the top surfaces of the layer formed in each section by diverting each layer downwardly while maintaining the suction on the layers to produce a laminated pack having as its outer surfaces the bottom surfaces of each of the two layers.
