Abstract: The present invention relates to an optical recording apparatus with processing means (50) arranged for processing encoded data (NRZ). The processing means further has demultiplexing means (DEMUX) arranged for demultiplexing the encoded data (NRZ) into a first plurality (m) of data channels (65) using a second clock frequency signal (CLK2). The data channels are transmitted through a flexible transmission path (40) where each data channel (65) has at least one electrical conductor means (41) for each data channel. In the optical pick-up unit (OPU; 20) synchronising by retiming means (23) of the first plurality (m) of data channels (65) using the first clock frequency signal (CLK1) takes place. Thereby, the optical recording apparatus will have an increased effective bandwidth between the processing means (50) of the optical recording apparatus, and the optical pick-up unit (OPU; 20) by nature of the parallel transmission of the plurality of data channels (65).

Abstract: A beverage maker (1) comprises a water tank (20) for containing and supplying water during a beverage making process, and a pump (40) for pumping the water out of the water tank (20). In order to terminate a pumping action at a predetermined point, the beverage maker (1) comprises a switch (64) which is arranged in a pumping circuit (41) for energizing the pump (40), a float (70) which is located in the water tank (20), and a coupling arm (71) attached to the float (70). During a pumping action, when a water level (21) in the water tank (20) is above a predetermined minimum level, the coupling arm (71) couples the float (70) to the switch (64), and the switch (64) is held in a closed position. However, as soon as the water level (21) reaches the minimum level, the coupling of the float (70) to the switch (64) is lost, and the switch (64) switches back to an opened position, as a result of which the pumping action is terminated.

Abstract: A prefetch bit (126) is associated with cache block (125) of a cache (120), and the management (130) of cache-prefetch operations is based on the state of this bit (126). Further efficiencies are gained by allowing each application to identify memory areas (115) within which regularly repeating memory accesses are likely, such as frame memory in a video application. For each of these memory areas (115), the application also identifies a likely stride value, such as the line length of the data in the frame memory. Pre-fetching is limited to the identified areas (115), and the prefetch bit (126) is used to identify blocks (125) from these areas and to limit repeated cache hit/miss determinations.

  • Publication number: 20090190461
Abstract: Multi layer near-field optical recording using a moderate numerical aperture (NA) is superior to the high-NA (NA=2.0) first-surface single-layer technique. The use of very flat and thin spacer layers limits spherical aberration due to difference in layer depth. The thin spacer layers may have a high refractive index because their thickness allow for a relatively high absorption constant. This makes possible in principle an m-layer system, e.g. m=4, with NA=1.6 which may include a flat, protective cover layer. Further a medium for use in such a system is described.

  • Publication number: 20090180184
Abstract: Methods for permanently introducing patterns in electro-optic crystals are provided, by forming patterned variations in the composition of the electro-optic crystals [28], during the crystal growth process. These methods open a way to a family of light-controlling devices that can operate at temperatures as high as 80 degrees centigrade, and may be stored at temperatures as high as 300 degrees centigrade. Additionally, they may withstand radiation of natural light and cosmic ray. In accordance with one embodiment, an electrically [76] controlled Bragg grating is introduced into a crystal, by a permanent periodic spatial variation [60] of its composition, forming permanent periodic striations. The periodic striations induce a spatial modulation of the dielectric constant, and the application of a uniform electric field produces an induced polarization grating.
