Abstract: Water-soluble polymers comprising an N-vinyl amide such as an N-vinyl lactam are found to be useful in processes wherein the polymer is introduced into a subterranean wellbore.Polymers useful in the recovery of natural resources are prepared by polymerizing an N-vinyl lactam by free radical initiation with polymerization conducted in an aqueous solution polymerization medium preferably containing a mixture of dissolved electrolytes, or in a polymerization medium consisting essentially of a tertiary alkanol. Copolymers of such N-vinyl lactams with unsaturated amides, and terpolymers prepared by polymerizing an N-vinyl lactam and an unsaturated amide with a selected termonomer compound are also useful when prepared by these methods. The invention also broadly encompasses utilizing a water-soluble polymer comprising at least one of a hydrophilic vinyl-containing sulfonate, phosphonate or ester and/or a hydrophilic N-vinyl lactam for applications under hostile conditions.

Abstract: A composition is provided which, when applied to a metal surface, forms a corrosion-inhibiting film thereon. The composition comprises an epoxy resin, an effective amount of a curing agent for the epoxy resin, an alcohol, and a hydrocarbon diluent. The composition is applied by contacting the metal surface with the composition as one solution or as a hydrocarbon solution of the epoxy resin and a solution comprising the alcohol and the curing agent. The composition is particularly useful in the treatment of down-well metal surfaces in oil and gas wells to inhibit the corrosion of the metal.

Abstract: A method for removing particulate solids, such as catalyst fines, from a hot slurry oil having a gravity of 5.degree. API to 15.degree. API, an atmospheric pressure initial boiling point of from about 500.degree. F. to about 750.degree. F. and an atmospheric pressure end point of less than 1,000.degree. F. which entails mixing a preselected amount of the slurry oil with a preselected amount of a hot vacuum reduced crude oil having equilibrium flash vaporization characteristics such that when the mixture is subjected to a selected temperature in a vacuum tower maintained at a vacuum of from about 1.0 mm Hg to about 10.0 mm Hg, at least 85 volume percent of the slurry oil will be flashed overhead and not more than about 15% of the vacuum reduced crude oil will be flashed overhead, and the particulate solids will remain in the liquid bottoms.
Abstract: A cutter for tapping a plastic pipe, which is capable of retaining a cut coupon, comprises a generally cylindrical element that terminates at one end in a smooth, thin walled circular cutting edge. The cutting edge surrounds a hollow coupon receiving section of the cutter which contains internal threads for engaging the cut coupon so that the coupon is retained within the hollow section of the cutter after completion of the tapping operation. The cutter is used in conjunction with a tapping tee having an internally threaded through-bore for receiving external threads that are provided on a portion of the cutter. The cutter is rotatably advanced through the bore of the tapping tee so as to contact and then cut through the plastic pipe to be tapped.

Abstract: A wire guided float level measurement system includes a float, a nozzle and an ultrasonic level detector which are attachable to an open frame. The float, which is supportable on a froth, is slideably attached to te frame via one or more guide wires, and the nozzle and ultrasonic level detector are fixed near the top of the frame. In operation the frame, with attachments, is disposed in a flotation cell in an upright position so as to traverse a froth layer which is formed in the cell. The float, while supported by the froth so as to follow the froth level, serves as a target for pulses transmitted from the ultrasonic level detector, and the detector continually measures the distance to the float which is an indirect indication of froth level. Any mineral accumulation on the float, which would interfere with its buoyancy, is washed off the top of the float by spraying wash water through one or more nozzles.
