    Abstract: A signal compensating apparatus is an apparatus for compensating a control signal which is generated on the basis of a light beam reflected by an optical recording medium and which includes information with respect to a relationship between a spot of the light beam and a track of the optical recording medium. The signal compensating apparatus has: a detecting device for detecting a damaged part of the control signal, which is caused by a defect of the optical recording medium or an obstruction existing on an optical path of the light beam or on the optical recording medium; a replacing signal generating device for generating a replacing signal whose level gradually varies so as to connect a level of a first normal part of the control signal immediately before the damaged part with a level of a second normal part of the control signal immediately after the damage part; and a replacing device for replacing the damaged part by the replacing signal.

The apparatus has reading device which irradiates read light to a recording medium 1 having information recording surfaces formed on at least two layers, respectively, receiving return light of the read light from the recording medium, and generating a read signal; and control device which executes a focus jumping process to generate a drive signal of a focusing actuator to move an optimum light converging position of the read light from one of the recording surfaces to the other based on a focusing error signal that is generated based on the return light. The apparatus further has drop-out detecting device which detects a drop-out of the read signal and vibration detecting device which detects a vibration of the recording medium or reading device.

    Abstract: The CATV system includes a center device and a plurality of terminal devices. The center device sends downstream timeslots, to the terminal devices, including upstream timeslots occupancy information and collision information. Upstream timeslot occupancy information indicates whether or not an upstream timeslot corresponding to the downstream timeslot is vacant, and collision information indicates whether or not a collision has occurred. The terminal device receives the downstream timeslot, checks upstream timeslot occupancy information to detect upstream timeslot in the vacant state, and sends upstream data to the center device via the vacant upstream timeslot. If the upstream timeslot makes a collision, the center device detects it and sends a downstream timeslot which includes collision information indicative of the occurrence of the collision. The user of the terminal device recognizes the collision having occurred or not by referring to the collision information.
