Abstract: A device for cutting or felling trees comprises a rotating blade of uniformly increasing width in the shape of a partial, truncated cone mounted on the edge of a base disk. The blade does not extend completely around the base disk. Cutting is performed by attacking the tree at an angle and rotating the blade in the direction of increasing width.
Abstract: An arrangement for adjusting the compressive force of drive rolls used for advancing a tree along a feed line for lopping. Drive rolls are arranged on opposite sides of the tree trunk and driven by hydraulic motors. Each drive wheel is pivotably mounted on its own arm and a cylinder-piston is connected between the arms and is used to adjust the distance between the drive rolls and to produce a compression force between them. A hydraulic circuit is provided which includes a drive motor, a pressure reducing valve and the cylinder-piston. The tank connection of the control pressure of the pressure-reduction valve is connected to the working pressure of the hydraulic motor so that when the rolls require a low rotating force the compression pressure created by the cylinder-piston is low and when the rolls require a high rotating force the working pressure required by the hydraulic motor increases and this working pressure increases the compression forces exerted by the cylinder-piston.
Abstract: A wedge-shaped deflector for small trees and brush, pivotally mounted on the side of the chassis of a lumbering machine ahead of the front wheels pivots freely about a horizontal axis which is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the machine. In its normal, downward position, the deflector presents a surface upon which steps are secured to provide access to the cab. Another surface, slanting downward and outward away from the side of the chassis engages solid and immovable obstacles along the path of the machine and causes the deflector to pivot upward, thereby avoiding breakage. Upper and lower stop means limit the arc through which the deflector can pivot.
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved vehicle retaining means comprising a plurality of retaining members, each of said retaining members being rotatably journalled in a bearing, each of said bearings being located proximate a side of a vehicle chassis, each of said bearings being tilted outwardly with respect to a perpendicular line to the plane of the chassis.
Abstract: A seat for a work machine or vehicle is mounted to be laterally pivotable about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the machine to permit the seat to accommodate to uneven terrain. Springs and shock absorbers are provided to absorb the shock of sudden changes in angular position. By restricting the seat to a lateral swinging motion, the driver maintains full control of steering and operation of foot pedals.
Abstract: A method and apparatus which permit a tree fetching member to continuously feed trees to harvesting apparatus without waiting for a previously deposited tree to be handled is characterized by having a single member function both as a means for lifting a tree to the handling line from a temporary holding location in the apparatus, below the handling line, and also as a lopping or delimbing knife. This lopping knife, which is rotatable about a horizontal, longitudinal axis, raises one tree at a time over its turning axis to the handling line. Then, acting as a feeding member, it takes part in the lopping operation in conjunction with other lopping knives which are intended for lopping only. The rotatable lopping knife is the sole means for raising a tree to the handling line.
Abstract: A method for breaking or extinguishing foam on a body of foam-forming liquid, requiring only a fraction of the amount of foam breaker used in conventional procedures, comprises initially adding a small amount of a catalyst-like foam preventive agent to extinguish the foam, then recycling the resulting foam preventive-containing liquid to contact fresh foamed liquid. Recycling continues until the foam preventive, due to dilution, becomes substantially ineffective, whereupon defoamed liquid, containing diluted preventive, is withdrawn from the system, a fresh amount of foam preventive is introduced, and the cyclic procedure repeated. Apparatus for performing the process is also disclosed.
Abstract: A continuously operative electrochemical ion exchange process for producing sodium, ammonium or magnesium sulphite or hydrogen sulphite in an aqueous solution simultaneously with the production of a useful calcium salt as a by-product by subjecting an aqueous solution of a salt of sodium, ammonium, or magnesium to an electrodialysis procedure with an aqueous solution of calcium sulphite or calcium hydrogen sulphite.

Abstract: A vibratory structure of a screening apparatus has two shafts connected to rotate together by a toothed belt. Each shaft carries an eccentric weight which may be adjusted relative to the position of the shaft. The amplitude and frequency of the screening apparatus may be easily adjusted by adjustment of the weights and change of the transmission ratio between the two shafts.
