  • Patent number: 6103154
Abstract: A method for injection-molding a cross-linked, foamed composition including the introduction of an inert gas into a mold chamber of a preheated mold to evacuate air and oxygen from the mold chamber. A mixture of a resin, a cross-linking agent and a chemical blowing agent are introduced into the mold chamber after the inert gas has evacuated air and oxygen from the mold chamber. The inert gas is evacuated from the mold chamber while the mixture substantially fills the mold chamber. The mixture is heated within the mold chamber to a temperature sufficient to thermally decompose the chemical blowing agent. The temperature of the mixture is maintained within the mold chamber until the resin substantially forms a cross-linked composition. The mold is opened and the cross-linked composition foams to produce a finished product that is free of oxidation.

  • Patent number: 6018892
Abstract: An internal collar device for an article of footwear. The internal collar device includes ankle wraps, a pivoting spine and a heel cup. The pivoting spine is a relatively narrow portion of the internal collar device which is flexible so that it pivots with the wearer's movement. The internal collar device is disposed in an external boot of the article of footwear so that the internal collar device pivots about a pivot axis near the wearer's malleoli. The article of footwear is configured so that internal collar device pivots almost entirely independently from the external boot. As such, the internal collar devices controls the forward and rearward flex of the wearer's ankle and provides support to the wearer's foot and ankle within the article of footwear. Further, forward and rearward flex of the wearer's ankle does not result in a crease or wear area forming in the external boot so that the present invention prevents premature wear of the boot material.

  • Patent number: 5997014
Abstract: A braking system for an in-line skate. The skate includes a boot mounted on a chassis. A cuff is rotatably mounted on the chassis. The chassis also has a plurality of wheels rotatably mounted thereon. The braking system for the skate includes a brake pad housing which is either fixedly or pivotally attached to a rear portion of the cuff, a brake pad disposed in the housing, and a roller arm rotatably mounted on the chassis. The roller arm is spring loaded so that when the brake is not in use, the roller arm is disposed above the wheels. The roller arm has a bearing assembly disposed therein, so that when the brake is actuated by a rearward rotation of the cuff, the brake pad engages the bearing assembly of the roller arm, thereby causing said bearing assembly to engage at least one of the wheels to slow and/or stop the skate. A rear wheel of the skate may be biased to enhance the braking action and reduce wheel wear.

  • Patent number: 5992057
Abstract: An article of footwear including a strapping and closure system providing additional support to a wearer's ankles and feet. The system includes a pair of heel straps fixedly attached to opposing sides of the article of footwear and includes an instep piece that is also fixedly attached to the article of footwear. The heel straps and the instep piece are not fixedly attached to an upper of the article of footwear, but are fixedly attached to a lasting board of the article of footwear, thereby allowing the heel straps and the instep piece to be tightened independently of an upper of the article of footwear. The article of footwear further includes a breathable piece of material or shroud attached to a base of the upper for protecting the upper from mud and dirt.

  • Patent number: 5987779
Abstract: An athletic shoe is described, provided with an inflatable tongue or bladder for a more secure fit to the user's foot. The bladder may include a plurality of chambers with a valve disposed therebetween to selectively inflate the chambers. The inflatable tongue or bladder has a lightweight pump disposed thereon. Inflatable footwear having an inflation bag under the foot is also disclosed. The inflation bag is formed by two sheets of material that are welded together. Interior welds are provided to moderate the thickness of the inflation bag. A foam layer having apertures is positioned adjacent to the inflation bag. The apertures overlie the interior welds and are sized larger than the interior welds. Also described is a slider valve that enables selective inflation of individual bladder chambers.

  • Patent number: 5893219
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an article of footwear including an upper, a sole and a pumping chamber for producing a continuous supply of fluid. The sole includes a midsole and an outsole. The pumping chamber is formed between the bottom surface of the midsole and the upper surface of the outsole and includes at least one inlet and at least one outlet. Movement of the wearer's foot causes fluid to be drawn into and expelled from the pumping chamber. The fluid produced by the pumping chamber may be used to inflate an expandable bladder or to provide ventilation to the wearer's foot.

  • Patent number: 5823544
Abstract: An anti-abrasion and rockering system for an in-line skate. The skate includes a skate boot mounted on a chassis. The chassis includes two sidewalls which are parallel and opposite to each other. Each sidewall has a row of holes formed therein, such that the holes on the first sidewall align with and are opposite to the row of holes on the opposing sidewall. Two of the opposing sets of holes are oblong. A plurality of axles are disposed in the holes on the chassis so that the wheels are rotatably mounted on the axles and between the sidewalls of the chassis. The anti-abrasion and rockering system for the skate includes bushings disposed in the holes in the chassis. The bushings disposed in the oblong holes slide up and down in the holes. An anti-abrasion and rockering plate is disposed on the exterior of each sidewall. Each plate has a first and second row of holes for accommodating the axles.
