Abstract: A mass spectrometry device includes a sample seating part including an ultrasonic vibrator having a through hole through which liquid particles formed by the ultrasonic vibrator from an adsorbent material including a sample and a solvent are discharged, the adsorbent material being seated on the ultrasonic vibrator; a reaction part in which plasma or an ionization medium generated by plasma come into contact with the liquid particles discharged from the through hole to form an ionized material; an introduction part discharging and introducing the ionized material to a detection part; and the detection part analyzing the ionized material discharged from the introduction part. The mass spectrometry device and the mass spectrometry method can detect the components of various samples by converting a sample into liquid particles using ultrasonic waves and applying plasma and can detect samples in various fields without regard to locations.

Abstract: A method of determining disease diagnosis, progression and response to therapy through the use of xenograft animal models for determining cancer biomarkers is presented. In use, a tumor from a patient is transplanted into an animal model such as a mouse. Expression levels of biomarkers for a disease are assessed in the serum of the animal model. A personalized gene expression profile or biomarker gene signature may be obtained from the expression levels of the biomarkers which can be used to determine disease recurrence, progression and response to therapy.

Abstract: A method for operating a computer system to generate and display multidimensional data. A set of multidimensional data points and a selected deviation range is received at a processor. The processor processes each data point to determine its value about the selected deviation range. Display data representative of data point indicia of the determined data point values at circumferentially spaced locations and with respect to an origin in a coordinate system is generated and stored by the processor. The data point indicia for the multidimensional data points are at circumferentially spaced locations, and a radial distance of the indicia with respect to the origin represents the determined data point values. A visual display of the display data can be produced on a printer or monitor.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of replicating viruses in vitro. In particular, the invention relates to a genetically modified population of cells, and/or a population of cells treated with an exogenous compound, wherein the cells are capable of producing more virus than cells lacking the genetic modification and/or lacking treatment with the exogenous compound. The invention also relates to methods of producing populations of such cells, as well as the use of the viruses obtained to prepare vaccine compositions.

Abstract: Methods of testing the material of a metal object made by additive manufacturing. An electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) is used to transmit long duration acoustic signals into the object, and to receive response signals representing resonance of acoustic waves within the material. At least one resonance peak is identified and used to determine attenuation and/or wave velocity. These values can then be used to determine material properties, such as porosity, Shear Modulus, Young's Modulus, or Poisson's Ratio.

Abstract: According to some aspects, a portable magnetic resonance imaging system is provided. The portable magnetic resonance imaging system comprises a B0 magnet configured to produce a B0 magnetic field for an imaging region of the magnetic resonance imaging system, a noise reduction system configured to detect and suppress at least some electromagnetic noise in an operating environment of the portable magnetic resonance imaging system, and electromagnetic shielding provided to attenuate at least some of the electromagnetic noise in the operating environment of the portable magnetic resonance imaging system, the electromagnetic shielding arranged to shield a fraction of the imaging region of the portable magnetic resonance imaging system. According to some aspects, the electromagnetic shielding may be configurable to providing a variable amount of shielding for the imaging region.

Abstract: A confinement structure and an actuation member that provides a system that allows for controllable deformation of a variety of containers are disclosed. In one embodiment, the system of the present disclosure provides for controllable deformation of a container such that a portion of the container acts as a wiping means to empty a substance from the container. A container that includes an indentation formed on a first end of the container and a container opening located at a second end of the container is also disclosed. In one embodiment, with the container deformed to a final position, the indentation fits inside the container opening to completely expel a substance from the container.
Abstract: A vector control system is used to control a vapor compression circuit that includes a compressor motor. The vector control system is used to monitor the vapor compression circuit and adjust the speed of one or more motors within the vapor compression circuit to increase efficiency of the system by taking into account the torque forces placed on the compressor motor.
Abstract: Provided is a low-temperature superconducting wire having a low stabilizing matrix ratio. The present invention provides a superconducting wire including: a low-temperature superconducting filament; a stabilizing Matrix encompassing the filament; and a sheath of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) material, which encompasses the stabilizing matrix on the exterior of the stabilizing matrix. According to the present invention, a low stabilizing matrix ratio is achieved while coping with heat caused by a quench phenomenon, thereby reducing manufacturing cost and achieving a high current density.

Abstract: Size-controlled ultra-small iron-based metal oxide nanoparticles, nanocolloids comprising the nanoparticles, and methods of making the nanoparticles. The method for making the iron-based nanoparticles include sequential mixing of an iron(III) salt, a metal (II) salt, a carboxylic acid, an amine, and an inorganic base in water at temperatures ranging from 25-80° C. Nanoparticles in the size ranging from 2 nm to 10 nm with a narrow size distribution are obtained with the method. The nanoparticles have an iron-based core surrounded by molecules such as a panel of different carboxylates, polycarboxylates, and amines. Depending on the hydrophilicity of the carboxylates used, the functional nanoparticulate colloid can be dispersed in either organic or aqueous solvents. The nanocolloids comprise the nanoparticles in a concentration ranging from 1-10 mg/ml, and are stable for at least several months.

Abstract: A method of separating sludge which involves adding an insoluble mineral colloidal suspension into an industrial sludge to destabilize the industrial sludge and separating destabilized components of the industrial sludge. The insoluble mineral colloidal suspension includes magnesium hydroxide. In an alternative embodiment dry finely divided magnesium hydroxide can be added and then dispersed into an industrial sludge. Conventional flocculants and/or coagulants can also be added. Conventional physical separation processes can be used to separate the destabilized industrial sludge.
