Abstract: Fused cyclopentane—4-substituted 3,5-dioxalane lactone compounds useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of prostaglandin analogs are provided. The compounds have the formula A: wherein R represents an aryl group such as p-methoxyphenyl. This compound can be reacted with a lower alkyl aluminum compound to open the dioxalane ring and reduce the lactone to lactol, without over-reducing to diol. The resulting compound can be functionalized to insert chemical side groups of target prostaglandins, adding the required ?-side chain and then the required ?-side chain sequentially and independently of each other. The compounds and process are particularly suitable for preparing lubiprostone.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for performing the estimation and/or prediction of the dynamic system state of large power system networks, using a multi-processor approach. More particularly, a large power system network is divided into smaller sub-systems, each sub-system having associated dynamic state variables. Each sub-system is assigned to one or more of a plurality of processing elements, and dynamic state variables for each sub-system are estimated or predicted independently, using the processing elements and sensor measurements. In several embodiments, the dynamic state of each sub-system is computed through the construction of a set of dedicated observers, such as linear parameter-varying (LPV) observers, which are designed to reduce the effects of other sub-systems on the state estimation problem.

Abstract: A motor structure includes a case, a rotor, a first magnet, a second magnet and at least one magnetic conductive plate, wherein the rotor is disposed within an accommodating slot of the case, and the first magnet is disposed between the case and the rotor. The first magnet comprises a first end portion spaced apart with the case to define a first separation space. The second magnet comprises a second end portion spaced apart with the case to define a second separation space. A spacing slot is composed of the first separation space and the second separation space, and the at least one magnetic conductive plate is disposed within the spacing slot. The magnetic conduction through the at least one magnetic conductive plate enables to lower the reluctance of the motor structure for prevention of magnetic flux leakage therefore increasing the air-gap flux density.

Abstract: Methods and architecture for monitoring hard disk drive operation is provided. The hard disk drive system provided includes a spindle, a head and a disk with a disk medium including a buried servo layer having a first frequency of data on a first track and a second frequency of data on a second track, the second track adjacent to the first track. The method includes the steps of writing a wide track pattern having a predetermined frequency on a track of a hard disk drive medium, generating a readback signal by reading the pattern from the track, processing the readback signal by mixing the readback signal with a reference signal to obtain a mixed signal having a summed signal and a difference signal, and filtering the mixed signal by a filter centered around the difference signal to generate a measurement signal corresponding to a relative speed change of the spindle and a head-to-disk motion.

Abstract: A method of testing visual performance includes determining a difficulty rating for each of a plurality of visual recognition tests. The method further includes displaying one of the visual recognition tests to a subject and receiving from the subject a response to the visual recognition test. After receiving the response to the visual recognition test, a subsequent visual recognition test is selected to have a difficulty rating determined based on the response received from the subject, the subsequent visual recognition test is displayed, and a response is received from the subject. The subsequent visual recognition tests are repeated until a predetermined number of responses is reached. A visual performance score is determined based on the set of responses received from the subject and the difficulty ratings for the visual recognition tests displayed to the subject is then output.
Abstract: A cover for a portable electronic device includes a keyboard for electrically communicating with the portable electronic device. The cover includes a back cover body for coupling to a back side of the portable electronic device, and a front cover body coupled to the back cover body and foldable relative thereto. The back cover body is movable relative to the portable electronic device such that a first portion of the back cover body slides away from a back side of the portable electronic device. The front cover body is foldable to stack a keyboard portion, on which the keyboard is disposed, and a support portion of the front cover body. The first portion of the back cover body, the support portion, and the keyboard portion are stacked when the keyboard is exposed for use.
Abstract: Methods and devices for reconstructing coefficient levels from a bitstream of encoded video data for a coefficient group in a transform unit. Sign bits are hidden in the parity of partially overlapping subsets of a set of coefficients. This enables the hiding of multiple sign bits per coefficient group. Other information bits may be hidden instead of sign bits in some cases.
Abstract: Methods and devices for reconstructing coefficient levels from a bitstream of encoded video data for a coefficient group in a transform unit. Greater-than-one flags are encoded by grouping them into tuples and by encoding a tuple-based value that is a function of the greater-than-one flags within that tuple. The tuple-based value may permit the decoder to infer the greater-than-one flags in some cases, in which case they are not encoded in the bitstream.

Abstract: There is provided a fusion protein comprising albumin and retinol-binding protein, which can be used for preventing or treating fibrotic diseases. The fusion protein, in which albumin and a retinol-binding protein (RBP) are bound together, induces the formation of cytoplasmic lipid droplets in stellate cells and returns the shape of activated stellate cells to the previous shape thereof before activation. Therefore, the fusion protein can be effectively used in preventing or treating fibrotic diseases occurring in the liver, pancreas, lungs, or other organs.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a circuit sharing time delay integrator structure. The major composing elements of this circuit sharing time delay integrator structure are: a sharing circuit, a first control block, a plurality of second control blocks and a timing set generated by a timing generator circuit. The sharing circuit can be an OP-AMP, an active load, or any of a variety of combinations used in signal accumulation applications. With the implementation of the present invention to applications of signal accumulations, the necessity of an adder circuitry is eliminated, the overall circuitry and hence the total amount of transistors required when producing the integrated circuit is massively reduced, and thus a great cost reduction and better timing and power efficiency can all be thereof achieved.

Abstract: Provided are an oxide sintered body and a sputtering target which are suitable for use in producing an oxide semiconductor film for display devices and combine high electroconductivity with a high relative density and with which it is possible to form an oxide semiconductor film having a high carrier mobility. In particular, even when used in production by a direct-current sputtering method, the oxide sintered body and the sputtering target are less apt to generate nodules and have excellent direct-current discharge stability which renders long-term stable discharge possible. This oxide sintered body is an oxide sintered body obtained by mixing zinc oxide, tin oxide, and an oxide of at least one metal (M metal) selected from the group consisting of Al, Hf, Ni, Si, Ga, In, and Ta, and sintering the mixture, the oxide sintered body having a Vickers hardness of 400 Hv or higher.
