  • Patent number: 5875760
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method of controlling a drive unit of a motor vehicle wherein the drive unit is controlled in dependence upon at least one operating variable. The operating variable is detected with at least first and second measuring devices as first and second quantities, respectively, thereby providing a redundant detection of the operating variable. The two measuring devices are mounted so that they move in synchronism with each other within a predetermined tolerance. The second quantity is checked for a fault utilizing a comparison in the context of the tolerance of the synchronism of movement. A fault without a movement out of the tolerance is detected when the value of the second quantity does not change in correspondence to the value of the first quantity within at least a predetermined value range of the operating variable. The invention is also directed to an arrangement of controlling the drive unit in dependence upon the operating variable.

  • Patent number: 5875411
Abstract: A method is introduced for detecting combustion misfires on the basis of the time-dependent course of the rotational movement of a transducer wheel, which is coupled to the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. In this method, the segment times, in which predetermined segments of the transducer wheel pass a sensor, are detected and processed to a measure for the rough running of the internal combustion engine. A conclusion as to misfires is drawn from the behavior of the measure. The measure for the rough running is formed by digital filtering of segment times with predetermined filter coefficients.

  • Patent number: 5873350
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for periodically clock driving a through-flow control valve between a first position wherein the valve is closed and a second position wherein the control valve is open to pass a flow of fluid therethrough. The valve is driven by a drive signal having a period duration and the valve opens in response to the drive signal only after a delay time (tv) has elapsed. In the method, the period duration of the drive signal is changed, and a reaction of a variable, which is operatively coupled to the flow, is detected. A value of the delay time (tv) is utilized when forming the drive signals and the value of the delay time (tv) is changed in dependence upon the detected reaction of the variable.

  • Patent number: 5873346
Abstract: A fuel injection pump is proposed, with an annular slide (20) that is displaceable on the pump piston by a governor and that has a control edge by which a relief conduit of the pump work chamber can be opened in the course of the pump piston supply stroke; the relief conduit portion emerging from the jacket face of the pump piston is embodied as a radial bore (18), and the fuel stream emerging from it is deflected by a deflection face (34) on the annular slide or a deflection face (76) on the pump piston, in such a manner that the stream is deflected out of the radial plane, avoiding axially active pressure zones, so that varying axial loads resulting from the various diversion events on one another on the control slide are avoided, and thus fluctuations in injection quantity from one injection event to another and the strain on parts of the governor are reduced as well.

  • Patent number: 5871411
Abstract: For an electro-hydraulically actuable continuously variable belt transmission, the selected contact pressure at the movable conical pulley discs must be of such a magnitude that the chain, the force transmitting belt or the like does not slip. On the other hand, the contact pressure should not be too great for a high efficiency of the transmission to be achieved at every operating point. The invention reliably prevents slippage of the belt (chain, force transmitting belt or the like) by controlling the belt slip. The mean contact pressure is thereby reduced. As a result, there is a decrease in the mechanical and hydraulic losses at the transmission. A variant of the invention includes an embodiment of a rotational-speed sensor which makes it simultaneously possible to measure the axial position of the pulley disc(s). As a result, there is a reduction in the additional complexity required for slip control compared to the belt-tension control.
