    Abstract: In a process for the preparation of 3-(4-methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl) butyraldehyde by hydroformylation of limonene in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, the improvement wherein a rhodium carbonyl complex containing additionally a triphenyl and/or trialkyl phosphine as ligands is used as catalyst and the reaction is conducted at a pressure of 100 to 350 bars and at a temperature of 110.degree. to 160.degree. C., the triphenyl or trialkyl phosphines or mixture thereof being present in an amount of 10 to 50 moles per gram atom of rhodium in the reaction mixture.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2-methyl-2-sec.butyl-1,3-propanediol comprising hydroformylating 2-methyl-1-butene with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a first catalyst to form the substance 3-methyl-pentanal, condensing said substance with formaldehyde, or a compound which forms formaldehyde under the conditions of condensation in a basic medium to form alpha-sec.butyl-acrolein, partially hydrogenating said acrolein in the presence of a second catalyst to form the material 2,3-dimethyl pentanal, and converting said material into said diol by treatment with formaldehyde, or a compound which forms formaldehyde under the conditions of conversion, in the presence of a strong base as a third catalyst.The compound of the present invention is useful as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and drugs; in particular, the production of carbamates which are useful as tranquilizers and blood pressure lowering agents.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of di-n-propyl-acetic acid, comprising the steps of:A. catalytically reacting n-butyric acid with cleavage of carbon dioxide and water to form heptanone-4;B. hydrogenating heptanone-4 in teh presence of a catalyst to form heptanol-4;C. dehydrating heptanol-4 in the presence of an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 catalyst to form heptene-3;D. hydroformylating heptene-3 in the presence of a rhodium complex compound as catalyst to form a mixture of 2-propyl pentanal and 2-ethyl hexanal;E. oxidizing the 2-propyl pentanal/2-ethyl hexanal mixture to form a mixture of di-n-propyl acetic acid and 2-ethyl hexanoic acid, andF. separating the mixture of di-n-propyl acetic acid and 2-ethyl hexanoic acid to recover pure di-n-propyl acetic acid.If desired, step B can be carried out without purification of the product of step A. Moreover, the dehydration of step C can be carried out without previous purification of the product of step B.

    Abstract: An improvement in the process for the gasification of a solid fuel wherein the solid fuel is at least partially oxidized at a temperature above the melting point of ash of the solid fuel and at a pressure of 10-200 bar where the resultant synthesis gas is thereafter cooled in the presence of combustion residues of the solid fuel, and the combustion residues are thereafter discharged directly, the improvement residing in carrying out the gasification in a gasification zone disposed vertically over and in fluid communication with a radiation zone comprising cooling surfaces, the radiation zone have disposed at the bottom thereof and in fluid communication with the radiation zone a water containing bath. The radiation zone is cylindrical or conical, widens by 0 to 15 degrees towards the bottom, is made in a finned wall construction with a relation of height to diameter of .ltoreq.6:1 and comprises cooling surfaces.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2,3-dimethylbutene-2 is disclosed, which comprises the steps of converting isovaleraldehyde to isopropylacrolein, hydrogenating .alpha.-isopropylacrolein to form 2,3-dimethylbutanol, dehydrating 2,3-dimethylbutanol to form an olefin mixture comprising 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 and 2,3-dimethylbutene-2, and isomerizing the 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 contained in the mixture into 2,3-dimethylbutene-2. The present process is technically simple and inexpensive to utilize, and results in high yields of the desired product.

    Abstract: A process for preparing carboxylic acids by the oxidative conversion of the corresponding aldehydes comprises oxidizing the aldehydes in the presence of a catalyst comprising the anion [Fe(CN).sub.5 H.sub.2 O].sup.-3. The catalyst may be selected from [Fe(CN).sub.5 H.sub.2 O].sup.-3, compounds that form [Fe(CN).sub.5 H.sub.2 O].sup.-3 under the reaction conditions, and their salts. The catalyst is useful for the oxidation of aldehydes with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases. The present process permits the use of lower reaction times and temperatures, and reduces the formation of undesirable reaction by-products.

    Abstract: A foamable copolymer comprising 40 to 98 percent by weight units of ethylene, 1 to 30 weight percent units of vinyl alcohol, 1 to 30 weight percent units of acrylic acid ester of a secondary or tertiary alcohol, and up to 2 percent by weight of vinyl acetate units is described together with a process for the manufacture thereof. The same is useful in the formation of a foamed mass which is relatively highly cross-linked. The copolymer can be foamed to form a foam by heating the same at 250.degree. to 350.degree. C. for 5 to 60 minutes in the absence of oxygen.
