  • Patent number: 6326408
Abstract: The invention concerns the transformation of expanded polymers, in particular styrene polymers of the polystyrene type and styrene copolymers. More particularly it concerns a method for transforming polymers in an expanded solid state into a non-expanded amorphous state in the form of a re-usable malleable pasty magma. The method comprises a step for treating the polymer with a transforming solution containing a solvent, a non-fatty lubricant and optionally an alcohol. The invention concerns the transformation method proper, the transforming solution used in said method, the device for implementing said method and the magma resulting from implementing the method.

  • Patent number: 6325922
Abstract: A filter device for filtering plastic melts includes a filter wheel having cavities which are covered by screening elements. A pressure sensor is provided in a melt inflow line upstream of the filter wheel. A pressure sensor is also provided in a melt outflow line downstream of the filter wheel. The pressure sensors measure the pressure drop across the filter. The melt inflow and outflow lines are connected to a melt channel in the filter device, respectively. A melt return line is in connection via a pump and a discharge line with a backflushing slot. The discharge line is connected to an accelerator for increasing pressure in surges. A further melt return/discharge line is connected via a 3-way valve and a return line to the melt inflow line or to a disposal line.

  • Patent number: 6312503
Abstract: A method and apparatus for quenching and scrubbing a hot gas using a liquid in a single packed column while controlling mist formation. Hot gas is introduced at the bottom of the column and drawn upward countercurrent to the scrubbing liquid. The column has three stages, each packed and fed liquid from above. The first stage is a quench region wherein the gas flow rate, liquid flow rate and liquid temperature are controlled such that the quench rate does not exceed 5.4° C./ft2 of packing to prevent formation of an aerosol mist. The second and third stages for scrubbing employ packed regions separately supplied with increasingly cooler and purer liquid.

  • Patent number: 6309719
Abstract: Copolyesters comprising monomeric units derived from norbornane compounds such as 2,3-norbornane dicarboxylic acid anhydride or dicarboxylate exhibit amorphous characteristics. Exemplary copolymers are obtained by polycondensation of ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid, and up to about 40 mole % cis-norbornane-endo-2,3-dicarboxylic acid anhydride or dimethyl trans-norbornane 2,3-dicarboxylate or mixtures thereof, based upon the total moles of ester forming components of the polyester. The copolymers containing monomeric units derived from norbornane dicarboxylic acid or dicarboxylate can be obtained by melt polymerization and exhibit no or very low crystallinity. The copolyesters may be used to produce transparent, optically clear amorphous articles of manufacture such as containers, extruded objects, and packaging by melt processing techniques such as injection molding, blow molding, extrusion or thermoforming.

  • Patent number: 6310233
Abstract: A pressure process for preparing a hydroxyalkyl ester monomer and oligomer that can be used to prepare a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is disclosed. The process includes the steps of reacting, by ethoxylation, dicarboxylic acid and alkylene oxide in the presence of a compressed gas medium to form a specified mixture of monohydroxyalkyl ester and bishydroxyalkyl ester. The reaction pressure is such that the density of the gas medium is greater than or equal to half the critical density of the compressed gas medium. The mole ratio of the alkylene oxide to the dicarboxylic acid is less than about 2:1, and preferably 1.1:1.2. The DP of all reaction products is less than 5. The reactant product may be polymerized into a polyester. The process may optionally employ catalysts such as amines or amino acids. The compressed gas medium can be a solvent and an optional cosolvent. The temperature of reaction is from about 100° C. to 240° C. at a pressure of 50-5000 psi.

  • Patent number: 6285276
Abstract: A control device is provided for an industrial truck, in particular the towbar of a towbar-guided industrial truck, having a circuit element to generate a multi-stage electrical control signal. The invention teaches that the switching element has at least one contact membrane (6) which can be electrically connected by a pressure force exerted on the contact membrane (6) with at least one of a plurality of contact points (2) that correspond to the contact membrane (6). The contact points (2) are connected by electrical resistors (R1-8). The electrical resistors (R1-8) are preferably connected in series, whereby the connecting line between each two resistors is connected to a contact point (2). There are two sliders (8a, b), each of which exerts a pressure force on the contact membrane (6), as a result of which a contact point (2) can be connected to a contact area (3).

  • Patent number: 6249993
Abstract: The present invention includes a trencher assembly with a motor that directly drives a sprocket through the rotation of a shaft of the motor. The rotation of the sprocket drives both a digging chain and an auger assembly simultaneously. The ability to use a motor to directly drive the sprocket decreases the components necessary for a drive train of the trencher assembly to promote a compact design. This occurs because the sprocket is able to drive both the digging chain and auger assembly through the transfer of driving forces from the motor without any intermediate gearing, belts, rotating support structure, and the like.

  • Patent number: 6247577
Abstract: Plain oval cigarettes which issue from a maker in such orientation that the minor axes of their oval cross-sectional outlines extend vertically are advanced lengthwise in the spiral groove of a trough toward an outlet where the major axes of their oval cross-sectional outlines extend vertically. The thus reoriented oval cigarettes are attracted to the undersides of receptacles which are pivotably mounted on a rotary carrier and deliver the cigarettes, without any further changes in the orientation of the major and minor axes of their cross-sectional outlines, to successive peripheral flutes of a rotary drum-shaped conveyor which transports the cigarettes in such a way that the minor axes of their oval cross-sectional outlines extend radially of the rotational axis of the drum-shaped conveyor. This ensures that the oval cigarettes are more reliably held in their flutes during advancement with the drum-shaped conveyor.
