  • Patent number: 6769843
Abstract: A tool holder for holding a cutting insert includes a head on which an insert-support surface is disposed. A plate is mounted on the head by a serrated connection, the head including fingers that form side surfaces disposed on opposing sides of the support surface. Each of the side surfaces includes a recess, wherein each side surface defines spaced apart contact areas. A slot extends through one of the fingers in spaced relationship to the side surface formed by that finger to render that side surface flexible. A passage interconnects an intermediate portion of that flexible side surface and an intermediate portion of the slot.

  • Patent number: 6767156
Abstract: Two components used in a percussive drill string include a spigot and a sleeve, respectively. The spigot includes a male thread connected to a female thread of the sleeve to form a thread joint. The male and female threads are dimensioned such that axially inner and outer end areas of the female thread are in non-engagement with the male thread when the thread joint is in a tightened state. The spigot includes axially inner and outer conical guiding surfaces facing toward respective axially outer and inner conical guiding surfaces, respectively. Each conical guiding surface forms an angle with a centerline of the sleeve, the angle lying in the range 1 to 20 degrees, to prevent the spigot and the sleeve from being welded together by frictional heat during a drilling operation.

  • Publication number: 20040136793
Abstract: A tool assembly includes a support body, a clamping device, and a tool holder clamped in a groove of the support body. A stopper block is disposed in the groove and abuts against the tool holder for positioning the tool holder along an axis. The stopper block is held in place by a wedge-type stopper clamp which applies a clamping force to the stopper block in a direction transversely of the axis. A wedge-type holder clamp is provided for applying a clamping force to the tool holder in a direction transversely of the axis. The stopper clamp is secured to the support body by a single fastening bolt, and the holder clamp is attached to the support body by a single fastening bolt. Each of the fastening bolts is provided with a part that forcefully pushes the respective clamp away from the support body in response to loosening of the fastening bolt. The arrangement is such that the tool holder can be inserted and removed without completely removing the holder clamp or its fastening bolt.

  • Patent number: 6736574
Abstract: An insert holder includes a head having ridge teeth, and an insert seat plate seated on the head such that ridge teeth thereof mesh with the ridge teeth of the head. The plate forms a V-shaped recess in which a cutting insert is to be received. The recess thus defines a position of support for the insert. A bisector of the V-shaped recess extends parallel to the ridge teeth. The insert seat plate is adjustable in the direction of the bisector (e.g., by individually deployable spacer plates of different thickness) to adjust the position of support defined by the V-shaped recess.

  • Patent number: 6709065
Abstract: A cutting bit includes a steel body on which a carbide cutting tip is brazed. Disposed rearwardly of a rearwardmost end of the tip, on a tapered side surface of a head of the bit body is an annular ledge which extends laterally outwardly sufficiently far to deflect cuttings laterally away from the bit. The ledge can be formed integrally with the bit body as the result of a machining operation, or the ledge can comprise a split ring that is elastically held in a groove formed in the tapered side surface. The ledge extends perpendicularly to a center axis of the bit, or is inclined slightly forwardly, in order to trap cuttings, such as asphalt, to cause a protective ring of asphalt to be formed in front of the ledge.
