  • Patent number: 6488285
Abstract: A hydraulic chuck includes a center bore for receiving a tool shank. At least one closed cavity is disposed in the chuck body adjacent the bore and extend circumferentially by a distance less than 360 degrees. The cavity containing device communicates with the medium for pressurizing the medium to radially deform and expand the bore wall from a normal diameter to a larger diameter to enable the tool shank to be moved into or from the bore. A depressurizing of the medium causes the bore wall to radially retract to the normal diameter for clamping the member in the bore.

  • Patent number: 6454498
Abstract: A clamping arrangement includes a holder blade having a body portion, the body portion having a key slot and a key recess are disposed relative to each other and relative to an insert-receiving slot such that, when a first keying member of a key is received in the key slot and the second keying member of the key is received in the key recess and the key is moved from an at-rest position to an opening position, the height of the insert-receiving slot is increased against resilient forces of the body portion to a sufficient height to install an insert for the holder blade and, when the key is returned to the at-rest position, the resilient forces cause the height of the insert-receiving slot to decrease and clamp the insert between the upper and lower surface of the insert-receiving slot.

  • Patent number: 6443672
Abstract: A cutting tool includes a nozzle for directing coolant toward an insert seat disposed in the tool. The nozzle includes a bore which directs coolant toward a location on the seat that is spaced from a center hole in which the nozzle is mounted. A rear end of the nozzle is pressed against a fixed surface of the tool by the pressure of coolant. The bore in the nozzle is in non-coinciding relationship relative to the axis of the hole in which the insert is mounted. The bore can be angled relative to axis of the hole, or the bore can be parallel to, but radially offset from, the axis of the hole.

  • Patent number: 6421906
Abstract: Identical ring-shaped metal blanks are machined whereby each blank forms a plurality of identical components. The blanks are first machined on both sides, and then a stack of the blanks is clamped axially adjacent one another on an arbor. Tools machine the blanks for reshaping the blanks. One of the tools is a slitter which makes axial cuts through the stack to separate each blank into a plurality of components distributed around the axis.

  • Patent number: 6352194
Abstract: A damaged area of a metal sheet, such a conveyor belt, is repaired by affixing frames to upper and lower sides of the sheet, and rotating a center element that is rotatably mounted in one of the frames, whereby a chip-removing cutting blade disposed on the center element cuts a piece out of the metal sheet following a number of rotations of the center element. The same mechanism is used to cut a correspondingly shaped replacement piece from a metal replacement sheet. The replacement piece is then positioned in the hole cut in the sheet to be repaired, and the center element carrying the cutting blade is replaced by a center element carrying a welding device. The welding device welds a joint between the replacement piece and the sheet as the center element is rotated. Inert shielding gas is supplied above and below the weld joint during the welding operation, and support rollers keep the sheet and the replacement piece flush with each other during the welding operation.

  • Patent number: 6343898
Abstract: A metal cutting tool includes a holder arrangement, an indexible cutting insert seated on an insert-receiving site of the holder arrangement, and a screw for fastening the insert to the site. The bottom side of the insert includes more than two upright abutment surfaces arranged to abut respective upright support surfaces of the site, whereby the areas of contact formed by the mutually abutting surfaces lie inside of an outer perimeter of the insert. The abutment surfaces are oriented non-parallel to one another. The screw is arranged to urge the insert in a direction whereby less than all of the abutment surfaces abut respective support surfaces, and at least one abutment surface does not abut a support surface. When the insert is indexed, the non-abutting abutment surface is relocated and caused to abut a support surface when the screw is tightened, while an abutment surface that previously abutted a support surface becomes a non-abutting surface.

  • Patent number: 6334740
Abstract: A milling tool includes a number of peripheral recesses, each of which accommodates an insert-carrying cartridge, and a clamping wedge which is tightenable by of a clamping screw. The clamping wedge includes two separate contact surfaces. One of the contact surfaces presses the cartridge into its respective recess. The other contact surface presses the insert into its seat in the cartridge while simultaneously pressing the cartridge into the recess.

  • Patent number: 6312199
Abstract: A metal cutting tool includes a tool body which carries a cutting insert and has nozzles for directing cooling fluid against the insert. The tool body defines a longitudinal axis and is insertable into a holder in an axial direction, whereby a surface of the tool body abuts a surface of the holder. Those surfaces include respective holes that are aligned with one another in a radial direction for transferring cooling fluid from a channel of the holder to a channel of the tool body. A seal surrounds one of the holes and is compressed when the tool body is inserted into the holder.

  • Patent number: 6280122
Abstract: A cutter head of a milling tool is equipped with machining elements which can be fastened in respective recesses of a rotary body by one or more clamping wedges. On the rear side of the individual machining element there are serrations which co-operate with serrations formed in a rear wall of the recess. The serrations extend generally parallel to an axis of rotation of the cutter head. A bottom wall in the recess is divided into a plurality of wall parts which are separated by a first axially facing abutment surface against which an axially facing a second abutment surface on the machining element can be engaged, to define an exact initial mounting location for the machining element.

  • Patent number: 6270294
Abstract: A tool for parting or grooving includes a holder to which is mounted an adapter having an insert-receiving slot formed between support and clamping portions of the adapter. The holder includes a serration meshing with a serration of the adapter. Threaded holes are formed through the serration of the holder, and through-holes are formed in the adapter in alignment with respective holes of the holder. Screws extend through the aligned through-hole and threaded hole to secure the adapter to the holder. A slot intersects through one of the through-holes of the adapter to render the clamping portion elastically deformable. That through-hole includes a conically-shaped entrace surface, and the associated screw includes a conical head which acts as a wedge to force the clamping portion into clamping engagement with the insert.
