  • Patent number: 6223640
Abstract: A chain saw comprises interconnected center links and side links. The side links include front and rear heels having front and bottom contact surfaces, respectively, which slidably engage an edge rail of a chain saw guide bar. The bottom contact surface of at least one of the heels includes a recess formed therein. The recess has an open front end and a closed rear end. The recess is of less width than a width of the respective bottom contact surface, whereby portions of the contact surface straddle the recess. The depth and width of the recess gradually decrease from the front end toward the rear end. During a cutting operation, lubricant enters the recess and creates a pressure which lifts the heel slightly off the rail, eliminating metal to metal contact.

  • Patent number: 6217263
Abstract: A rhombic shaped metal cutting insert is adapted for longitudinal turning and copy turning. Opposing nose corners of the insert form equal angles less than 60 degrees. A pair of side cutting edges converge toward each of the nose corners. The side cutting edges of each pair form obtuse angles with respective side cutting edges of the other pair. A longest diagonal extending through the insert intersects both of the nose corners and forms an acute angle relative to a diagonal which bisects both of the obtuse angles. Each nose corner has a corner cutting edge formed by a plurality of curved segments. First and second ones of those segments are disposed on opposite sides of the longest diagonal and together form an angle of about 90°. Situated between the first and second segments is a third segment which is intersected by the longest diagonal. Adjacently disposed ones of the curved segments at each corner have radii that are different from one another.

  • Patent number: 6209703
Abstract: An object-sorting system includes a plurality of conveyor platforms traveling along a travel path between a loading zone and an unloading zone. The unloading zone includes a plurality of exits spaced apart along the travel path for receiving respective ones of the objects. Each conveyor platform receives and unloads objects in a direction transverse to the travel path. Two objects are loaded onto each platform so that the first object to be unloaded is disposed closest to the side of the platform from which it is to be discharged. The loading station is arranged to load the two objects without stopping the conveyor platform. The loading station includes two loading conveyors arranged to load objects onto each platform at respective locations along the travel path.

  • Patent number: 6199284
Abstract: Shears for cutting metal sheet include first and second jaws pivotably interconnected by a jaw joint. The jaws have respective cutting edges located forwardly of the jaw joint, and which are arranged to cross one another at a crossing point which moves during a cutting operation. The cutting edges are configures to cross one another at a substantially constant angle during a cutting operation. The second jaw includes an extension extending rearwardly of the jaw joint. The first jaw has a rigidly attached first gripping handle. A second gripping handle is pivotably connected to the first handle by a handle joint located rearwardly of the jaw joint. The second handle engages a surface of the extension by a sliding contact, whereby a distance between the jaw joint and the sliding contact increases during a cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 6193451
Abstract: A tool holder includes a house and a clamping mechanism provided therein. The clamping mechanism includes a male member adapted to engage in a female-like opening in a tool. The male member is movable to and fro between clamping and releasing positions by means of a piston device that separates inner and outer hydraulic medium chambers. A passage extends through the piston device and emerges in the two chambers. A valve is provided in the passage in order to open the passage when the hydraulic pressure in the outer chamber rises to a preset limit value so as to limit the amount of force that clamps the tool.

  • Patent number: 6168356
Abstract: A metal cutting tool includes a holder arrangement, an indexible cutting insert seated on an insert-receiving site of the holder arrangement, and a screw for fastening the insert to the site. The bottom side of the insert includes more than two upright abutment surfaces arranged to abut respective upright support surfaces of the site, whereby the areas of contact formed by the mutually abutting surfaces lie inside of an outer perimeter of the insert. The abutment surfaces are oriented non-parallel to one another. The screw is arranged to urge the insert in a direction whereby less than all of the abutment surfaces abut respective support surfaces, and at least one abutment surface does not abut a support surface. When the insert is indexed, the non-abutting abutment surface is relocated and caused to abut a support surface when the screw is tightened, while an abutment surface that previously abutted a support surface becomes a non-abutting surface.

  • Patent number: 6112832
Abstract: During the drilling of rock by a rock drill bit, percussive impacts are applied to the drill bit by a reciprocating piston which impacts a shank that transmits the impacts to the drill bit. Secondary pistons are provided to push the shank forwardly in response to a pressure medium acting on rear surfaces of the secondary pistons. The secondary pistons push the shank to its optimum point of impact. During a drilling operation, as the piston applies percussive impacts, return pulses are reflected back to the secondary pistons. Pressure sensors detect the return pulses in the form of pressure pulses, which indicate whether the drill bit has encountered weaker or stronger materials. Based upon characteristics of the detected pressure pulses, the operation of the drilling machine, e.g., the feed and/or impact power thereof, is regulated, so that the shank is returned to its optimum point of contact.
