  • Patent number: 6074138
Abstract: A cutting insert adapted for cutting-off and grooving operations comprises a body adapted to be mounted in a holder, the body including a pair of side surfaces spaced apart to define a thickness of the body. The body further includes a bottom surface, a rear surface, a top surface and a front surface each extending transversely from one of the side surfaces to the other side surface. A wall is oriented substantially parallel to the side surfaces and is situated midway therebetween. The wall includes a pair of side faces spaced by equal distance from respective ones of the side surfaces, a front side extending upwardly from the front surface, and a top side extending forwardly from the top surface. The front and top sides intersect one another to define a cutting edge formed of the same material as the front and top sides.

  • Patent number: 6053669
Abstract: A cutting insert is cooled during chip removing machining of a workpiece by conducting cooling medium through a porous supporting body of the insert. The cooling medium enters the insert through an inlet formed therein at a location remote from a cutting edge of the insert and exits the insert through an outlet formed in the insert at a location proximate the cutting edge. The discharged cooling medium impinges on, and cools, the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6017171
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of a milling tool for cutting machining, preferably of metals. The milling tool includes a holder part (2) for the fixation of the milling tool upon a rotating driving arrangement, and an insert carrying part which around its periphery is equipped with several detachable cutting inserts (23), each cutting insert being fastened in an insert seat, which at least partly is situated in a peripheral, insert-carrying milling tool portio (12). Each insert seat includes a bottom support surface (10) and a side support including at least one side support surface (9), a chip pocket (25) being provided in front of each insert seat in the direction of rotation. The side support of the insert seat at least partly is made by a ball-nose end mill (8). This brings about that the number of insert seats in a milling tool may be substantially increased.

  • Patent number: 6006629
Abstract: A saw chain is automatically sharpened during use by causing top sides of the cutter links to be pressed against a stationary abrasive block when the saw chain is running around a rim type sprocket. The cutting link includes a cutting edge, and a depth gauge recessed radially from the cutting edge by a distance defining the cutting depth. The generally cylindrical outer periphery of the drive sprocket has raised steps or ramps formed thereon which lift the front end of the cutter links relative to the rear ends, thereby allowing a sufficiently large cutting depth to be achieved without locating the depth gauge far in front of the front rivet. This reduces vibration and instability of the saw chain when sawing.

  • Patent number: 5983508
Abstract: A chain saw includes a motor unit and a guide bar clamped thereto by a clamping plate. The guide bar, which supports a saw chain, has a longitudinal slot formed therein. Clamping bolts carried by the motor unit pass through the slot and through the clamping plate for securing the clamping plate to the motor unit. One (or both) of the side edges of the slot includes corrugations. The clamping plate includes a hole aligned with the corrugations to enable a toothed key to be arranged in meshing engagement with the corrugations whereby a rack-and-pinion relationship is formed. By manually rotating the key, the guide bar is longitudinally displaced for varying the tension on the saw chain.

  • Patent number: 5967705
Abstract: A rotary metal-cutting tool includes a tool body and a cartridge carrying a cutting insert that is adjustable in relation to the tool body. The adjustment is accomplished by providing a serration on one side surface of the cartridge and a correspondingly curved recess in the tool body adjacent the serration for the receipt of a key element. The key element has teeth engageable with the serration such that rotation of the key produces adjustment of the cartridge and insert.

  • Patent number: 5944457
Abstract: A toolholder forms a seat in which a cutting insert is seated. The insert is held in place by a clamp having front and rear portions. The front portion engages within a center hole of the insert, and the rear portion engages an inclined surface of the toolholder so that the clamp is pushed downwardly and rearwardly when attached by a screw. A coil spring surrounds the screw and is compressed between the clamp and the toolholder to bias the clamp upwardly. An upper end of the spring is disposed in a bore of the clamp which is inclined relative to the screw, whereby the spring abuts a rear portion of a wall of the bore to bias the clamp rearwardly as well as upwardly.

  • Patent number: 5934844
Abstract: A round cutting insert, normally made of cemented carbide, for turning operations is provided. It comprises a top surface, a round clearance surface, and a bottom surface. The top surface comprises a number of main, circumferentially spaced chip-breaking grooves. Essential for the invention is that each of the main grooves comprises a further chip-breaking groove which is encircled by the main groove. Thanks to the superposed grooves, the insert becomes very versatile, with good chip control both at low and high feeds, as well as at small and large cutting depths.

  • Patent number: 5871309
Abstract: A rotary milling cutter body includes a plurality of inserts positioned at a positive axial angle and a negative radial angle. Shims are disposed behind respective inserts. One of the shims is thinner than the other shims (e.g., by 20-150.mu.m) so that the insert associated with the thinner shim has a greater axial projection than the other inserts. If shims are not used, one of the inserts could be thinner than the other inserts to achieve the same effect.

  • Patent number: 5862600
Abstract: A chain saw includes a drive unit having a drive shaft, and a chain guide bar mounted to the drive unit by two bolts. The guide bar is attached to the drive unit by an insert structure which fits into a longitudinal slot of the guide bar. The insert structure can be oriented in at least two different orientations within the slot for establishing different positional relationships, respectively, between the drive shaft and a longitudinal center line of the guide bar. For example, the center line could be offset either above or below the drive shaft, or the center line could intersect the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 5827017
Abstract: A metal cutting insert, especially for grooving operations includes a front cutting edge and two side cutting edges disposed on a top side of the insert. Two laterally spaced, upstanding ridges are disposed on the top side, each ridge extending generally longitudinally. A chipbreaker pit is formed in the top side between the two ridges. A front portion of the pit is deeper than a rear portion of the pit and intersects the front cutting edge to form a depression therein. The pit guides a chip longitudinally rearwardly toward an edge formed by the intersection of the front and rear pit sections. The ridges converge rearwardly in the vicinity of the intersection edge to form therewith a squeezing zone which squeezes the chip. A pair of burls are upstanding on the pit front portion in the vicinity of respective ones of the ridges.
