  • Patent number: 6469253
Abstract: The present invention relates to an oxide superconducting wire. The wire has a filament made essentially of an oxide superconductor, and a stabilizing metal covering the oxide superconductor. The stabilizing metal includes a silver alloy having at least either higher mechanical strength or higher specific electrical resistance than that of silver. In one embodiment, the stabilizing metal further includes a first portion directly covering the oxide superconductor and a second portion covering the first portion. The first portion is adapted to prevent the component of the second portion from diffusing into and reacting with the oxide superconductor. The first and second portions have different materials, and the first portion is made essentially of an Ag—Sb alloy. In another embodiment, the stabilizing metal further has a first portion directly covering the oxide superconductor, a second portion covering the first portion and a third portion covering the second portion.

  • Publication number: 20020136251
Abstract: The present invention is an automatic gain control system for use with a multiple wavelength laser LIDAR system that transmits sets of time-separated interrogating signals to generate sets of time-separated return signals. A comparator defines a plurality of unique peak amplitudes and a corresponding plurality of unique binary words associated therewith. The comparator receives each of the laser LIDAR system's return signal from an i-th set thereof and outputs a binary word indicative of a peak amplitude achieved thereby. The binary word is one of the plurality of unique binary words. A memory has each of a plurality of address locations defined by one of the plurality of unique binary words. Each address location stores a unique gain value. An adjustable gain amplifier has a signal input for receiving each return signal and a gain adjustment input coupled to the memory.

  • Patent number: 6456523
Abstract: A ferromagnetic double quantum well tunneling magnetoresistance device is disclosed that utilizes a two-dimensional electron (positive hole) system to obtain an infinitely great magnetoresistance ratio. Also disclosed are a sensitive magnetic sensor and a nonvolatile storage device derived from that device. In structural terms of the device, a first and a second quantum well layer of ferromagnetic material (4, 8) in each of which the quantum confinement for carriers is established in a two-dimensional electron (positive hole) state are each sandwiched between a pair of barrier layers of nonmagnetic material (2, 6, 10) through which the carriers can tunnel. The first and second quantum well layers (4, 8) have a difference in coercive force so that when an external magnetic field is applied thereto only one of them may be reversed in the direction of magnetization.

  • Patent number: 6452140
Abstract: A substance 6 is located in a gradient magnetic field and held in a levitating state by a magnetic force produced by the gradient magnetic field. The substance 6 as such in the levitating state is heated and melted by ray or heat irradiation or by a resistance heater. Thereafter, the heating is stopped, and the substance 6 is cooled as such in the levitating state. Since the magnetic force realizes the microgravity field where the substance 6 is melted and cooled in the levitating state, the substance 6 is formed to an ideally spherical shape with an extremely smooth surface.

  • Patent number: 6452244
Abstract: On a semiconductor layer 1 consisting of a substrate of a semiconductor single crystal or the like, a metallic layer 2 of a thickness of 20 nm or less is formed. The metallic layer 2 comprises a first area A directly contacting with the semiconductor layer 1, and a second area B that is interposed by an intermediate layer 3 consisting of an insulator, a metal different from the metallic layer 2 or a semiconductor different from the semiconductor layer 1 between the semiconductor 1 and the metallic layer 2, and of a thickness of 10 nm or less. The first area and the second area are different in their Schottky currents, further in their Schottky barrier heights. Any one of the respective areas A and B has an area of nanometer level, and the respective interfaces in each of the areas A and B have an essentially uniform potential barrier, respectively. Such a film-like composite structure contributes to a minute semiconductor device of nanometer level and realization of a new functional device.

  • Publication number: 20020095108
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for regenerating an oxygen-binding ability by reducing the methemoglobin contained in hemoglobin-vesicle by light irradiation. This method comprises adding electron donors such as amino acids, saccharides, alcohols, and/or flavin derivatives in appropriate amounts to the inner aqueous phase of the hemoglobin-vesicle, applying light to the vesicle when the content of methemoglobin increases as a result of oxidation of hemoglobin, thereby reducing the metohemoglobin. In this manner, the oxygen-binding ability is recovered, thereby maintaining the function of the hemoglobin-vesicle.
