Abstract: Input data is encoded using a look-up table and then transmitted over a transmission medium as a series of pulses. The look-up table includes data elements. The length of each pulse is calibrated to correspond to one of the data elements in the look-up table. Upon receipt at another end of the transmission medium, the data is decoded using a look-up table. This decoding includes measuring the length of each received pulse to match the measured length to a corresponding one of data elements in the look-up table.
Abstract: A method for tracking and reporting material movements and responding to material movements. Tracked-components are assigned a component identifier which can be associated with a location. The identifier is associated with a first location, and in response to a movement trigger, the location associated with the identifier is updated to a second location. A component can be comprised of multiple sub-components, each of which itself is a tracked component. When the location of the component is updated, the location of each sub-component is similarly updated. Each update of the location of a component can trigger reports or other actions within the system.
Abstract: One implementation of the disclosed technology involves detecting a transition in a signal received via one of a first indexed input and a second indexed input. The transition defines a first symbol having a symbol value. This implementation further involves outputting the first symbol in response to detection of a transition. The symbol value of the first symbol is designated by the index of the indexed input upon which the transition is detected.
Abstract: Physical subsector error marking allows for selectively marking subsectors of a physical sector of a storage medium as unreadable. The error marking may include a bad sector mask to indicate that the subsector is unreadable combined with an error signature to confirm that the bad sector mask was set intentionally. The remaining readable subsectors of the physical sector may be returned to the host.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for detecting and compensating for lubrication disturbance (lube disturb) events on a rotatable data recording medium. In some embodiments, a lube disturb event is detected responsive to displacement of a data transducer away from a first memory location on a rotating data recording medium during a write operation to write data thereto. The lube disturb event arises responsive to a transfer of accumulated contamination from a data transducer to a lubrication layer on the rotating data recording medium and a smearing of the transferred accumulated contamination along the first memory location. The write data are stored to a different, second memory location instead of to the first memory location responsive to the detected lube disturb event.
Abstract: Various embodiments can be generally directed to a magnetoresistive stack with a first stripe height and a biasing magnet positioned adjacent the magnetoresistive stack. The biasing magnet can have a second stripe height that is less than the first stripe height. The first and second stripe heights may correspond to a minimum signal to noise ratio in the magnetoresistive stack.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for managing data in a memory. In accordance with some embodiments, a first data object and an associated first ECC data set are generated and stored in a non-volatile (NV) main memory responsive to a first set of data blocks having a selected logical address. A second data object and an associated second ECC data set are generated responsive to receipt of a second set of data blocks having the selected logical address. The second data object and the second ECC data set are subsequently stored in the in the NV main memory responsive to a mismatch between the first ECC data set and the second ECC data set.

Abstract: Digital rights management (DRM) can be effectively implemented through use of an anchor point and binding records within a user's anchor point domain. Assigning security levels to various components within an anchor point based DRM system and evaluating them against a security criterion provides additional protection against authorized access of the digital content. The content provider may specify the security criterion (e.g., a security level threshold), and the ability to use the digital content is denied or granted based on the ability of components to satisfy this criterion. For example, the ability to use a digital property instance is granted to a content handler that satisfies the security criterion and denied to a content handle that does not satisfy the security criterion.
Abstract: Flux-closed spin-transfer torque memory having a specular insulative spacer is disclosed. A flux-closed spin-transfer torque memory unit includes a multilayer free magnetic element including a first free magnetic layer anti-ferromagnetically coupled to a second free magnetic layer through an electrically insulating and electronically reflective layer. An electrically insulating and non-magnetic tunneling barrier layer separates the free magnetic element from a reference magnetic layer.
Abstract: A data reader may be configured at least with a magnetic stack positioned on an air bearing surface (ABS) and contacting a spin depolarizing layer that is a minority spin current carrier. The spin depolarizing layer can have a thickness and spin diffusion length corresponding to a net zero spin polarization at an interface of the magnetic stack and spin depolarizing layer.

Abstract: Certain exemplary aspects of the present disclosure are directed towards an apparatus in which a base deck and a base deck cover interface with one another to provide a permeability path. The base deck includes an outer region, and the base deck cover includes a lip that interfaces with the outer region of the base deck to provide the permeability path. The permeability is further defined by at least three interleaved sidewalls of the base deck and base deck cover that define two segments of the permeability path. The permeability path is filled with a polymer material that creates a seal between the base deck and base deck cover.
