Another embodiment may further comprise selecting a physical address-based move operation or a logical address-based move operation based on a number of sets of contiguous valid memory spaces in the first storage area, wherein the physical address-based move comprises moving data based on physical data addresses, and logical address-based moved comprises moving data based on logical block addresses.
Abstract: A method for determining a retention time in a solid state device (SSD), comprising the steps of providing a plurality of write operations to a memory, determining a reference voltage for each of the write operations, determining a difference between (i) the reference voltage after each of the write operations and (ii) a target reference voltage and if the difference is above a predetermined value, generating a flag indicating an excessive retention has occurred.

Abstract: A method for encoding a reduced polar code is disclosed. The method generally includes steps (A) to (C). Step (A) may generate the intermediate codeword by polar code encoding input data. Step (B) may remove one or more bits from one of (i) a first part of the intermediate codeword and (ii) a second part of the intermediate codeword. Step (C) may generate an output codeword by concatenating the first part of the intermediate codeword with the second part of the intermediate codeword after the bits are removed.

Abstract: A perpendicular recording medium having a perpendicular magnetic recording layer and a magnetically soft underlayer structure disposed beneath the recording layer. The soft underlayer structure includes at least first and second soft magnetic layers having different magnetic permeabilities to create a magnetic permeability gradient in the soft underlayer structure. One or more of the soft magnetic layers can be antiparallel coupled. The soft underlayer structure of the present invention having a magnetic permeability gradient advantageously leads to reduced adjacent track erasure (ATE) while maintaining good overwrite (OW) properties.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for performing a rewrite operation on recording bands of a data storage medium. In some embodiments, data may be read from a target band including a plurality of tracks, and modified. A portion less than all of the modified data is stored to a nonvolatile memory, and all of the modified data is written to the target band. In some embodiments, modified data corresponding to the first two tracks of the target band is stored to the nonvolatile memory, and modified data corresponding to the third track of the target band is written back to the first physical track. Each track may be written in order, ending with the modified data corresponding to the first two tracks. The result may be that data for each track in the band has shifted up two tracks, with data for the first two tracks moved to the end.

Abstract: Technologies are described herein for utilizing a head heater to test temperature stability of a head of a storage device and to prevent the head from operating in an unstable temperature condition. A first power level may be applied to a head heater of a head in a storage device, the first power level configured to simulate a temperature condition in the head. An instability of the head is determined and the temperature condition and the instability of the head are recorded in a memory. The process may be repeated to develop a range of temperature conditions in which the head exhibits instability. The range of temperature conditions and the head heater may then be utilized to prevent the head from operating in an unstable temperature condition during normal operation.

Abstract: An imminent state reset of a data storage device is detected. In response to determining volatile data of the data storage device could be lost in response to the state reset, the volatile data of the data storage device is stored to a backup memory of the data storage device together with first header data that facilitates recovering the volatile data. The backup memory includes non-volatile, solid-state memory. In response to determining the volatile data would not be lost in response to the state reset, second header data is stored in the backup memory. After the state reset, a recovery of the volatile data from in the backup memory is attempted if the first header data is detected, or a host device is alerted if neither the first header data or second header data is detected.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for verifying and controlling a clearance distance of an object, such as but not limited to a fly height of a read/write transducer adjacent a recording medium in a data storage device. In accordance with some embodiments, a sensor is used to sense a plurality of patterns from an adjacent surface, with each pattern being written at a different constant frequency. A final clearance distance between the sensor and the surface is established in response to a multi-frequency response ratio from the sensor and a single frequency response ratio from the sensor.
