Abstract: Implementations disclosed herein allow a signal detected by a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor to be improved by providing for a region of reduced anisotropy within a synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) shield. The SAF shield includes first and second layers of ferromagnetic material separated by a coupling spacer layer. A distance between the first and second layers of ferromagnetic material is greater in a region proximal to the sensor stack than in a region away from the sensor stack.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for dynamically moving data between tiers of mass storage devices responsive to at least some of the mass storage devices providing information identifying which data are candidates to be moved between the tiers.
Abstract: Apparatus and method for moving a control object, such as but not limited to a data read/write transducer adjacent a rotatable magnetic recording medium in a data storage system. In accordance with some embodiments, a compensation value is calculated for a baseline friction model which predicts friction in a positioning system. A modified friction model is generated based on the compensation value and the baseline friction model. A control object of the positioning system is moved from an initial position to a final position responsive to a trajectory profile calculated using the modified friction model.

Abstract: Alignment of a near field transducer (NFT) optical input coupler and a light emitting device involves providing excitation radiation from an excitation light source through an optical input coupler to the NFT and filtering output radiation from the NFT using a short wavelength pass optical filter. The optical input coupler is scanned through multiple positions while the photoluminescent radiation is detected. A first alignment position between the NFT input coupler and the excitation light source is identified based on the detected photoluminescent radiation. A light emitting device is scanned through multiple positions the light output is detected by a detector. A second alignment position between the light emitting device and the detector is identified. The first and second alignment positions are used to align the light emitting device with the optical input coupler.
Abstract: An apparatus disclosed herein comprises a magnetically free layer and a bottom shield, wherein a first portion of the bottom shield substantially adjacent the free layer is pinned perpendicular to an air-bearing surface (ABS) of the apparatus and a second portion of the bottom shield not substantially adjacent the free layer is pinned parallel to the ABS of the apparatus.

Abstract: A light source is configured to produce light, a waveguide is optically coupled to the light source and configured to direct the light to an intended focus location, and a slider is configured to use the light as an energy source for heating a region of a magnetic recording medium. A thermal sensor is situated on the slider at a location outside of a light path that includes the intended focus location. The thermal sensor is configured for sensing a short time constant change in temperature resulting from light source heating of the thermal sensor, wherein the sensed change in thermal sensor temperature is representative of optical intensity of the light delivered to the intended focus location.

Abstract: Various aspects of the present disclosure are directed toward an apparatus, such as a disc drive, including a disc having multiple tracks, a magneto-resistive transducer assembly, and multiple-track signal correction circuitry. The multiple-track signal correction circuitry compensates for asymmetry in a readback signal of read data stored in at least one of multiple tracks based on different correction coefficients for respective ones of the multiple tracks.
Abstract: A planarization process may planarize a media disk that has data trenches between data features and larger servo trenches between servo features. A filler material layer is deposited on the media disk and provides step coverage of the trenches. The filler material has data recesses over the data trenches and servo recesses over the servo trenches that must be removed to produce a planar media surface. A first planarization process is used to remove the data recesses and a second planarization process is used to remove the servo recesses.
