Abstract: Aspects include recording media with enhanced areal density through reduction of head media spacing, head keeper spacing, or head to soft underlayer spacing. Such aspects comprise replacing currently non-magnetic components of devices, such as interlayers and overcoats with components and compositions comprising magnetic materials. Other aspects relate to magnetic seed layers deposited within a recording medium. Preferably, these aspects, embodied as methods, systems and/or components thereof reduce effective magnetic spacing without sacrificing physical spacing.

Abstract: A low-density parity-check decoder in a system with multi-level cells identifies zones of reliability where write errors or stuck cells are identifiable. The system uses assumedly successfully decoded pages associated with bits in a cell to identify candidate write errors or stuck cells and erases a corresponding log-likelihood ratio even where such log-likelihood ratio is saturated, thereby breaking a potential trapping set without post-processing.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for detection and decoding in flash memories using a correlation of neighboring bits or errors in neighboring bits. Data from a flash memory device is processed by obtaining one or more read values for a plurality of bits in one or more pages of the flash memory device; converting the one or more read values for the plurality of bits to a reliability value, such as a log likelihood ratio (LLR), for a given bit among said plurality of bits based on a probability that a data pattern was written to the plurality of bits given that a particular pattern was read from the plurality of bits; and decoding the given bit in a given page of the one or more pages using the reliability value. The probability may be obtained from one or more transition probability tables, or may be based on one or more reference cells, prior decoded decisions or performance factors.

Abstract: A data writing device may be constructed and operated with at least a data writer that has at least a write pole and a magnetic feature. A controller may selectively activate the magnetic feature to magnetically oscillate and produce a radio frequency signal proximal the write pole on an air bearing surface (ABS).
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for dynamic band boundaries in data storage devices, particularly devices employing shingled magnetic recording. Band boundaries may be modified to include spare sectors from guard areas between bands to achieve field defect-slipping. Band boundaries can also be shifted to migrate spare sectors from one guard area to another in order to dynamically distribute spare sectors. In one embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a data storage medium and a controller. The data storage medium may have a first and second sequence of circumferentially adjacent data sectors, and a first guard area disposed between the first and second sequence such that no sector of the first sequence is directly adjacent to a sector of the second sequence. The controller may be configured to restructure the first sequence to include a sector from the first guard area to produce a shifted first sequence.
Abstract: A write pole may be formed by first depositing a dielectric layer onto a substrate and then patterning the dielectric layer to form a trench with a write pole shape. The trench is subsequently filled with the evaporation deposition of a magnetic material to form a write pole. The trench may have a greater depth dimension than width dimension.

Abstract: Apparatus for dissipating heat during the operation of a device. In accordance with some embodiments, the apparatus compares spaced-apart first and second heat sources. A thermally conductive plate is disposed between the first and second heat sources. A thermal interface layer is contactingly disposed between the plate and the first heat source, and has a relatively higher thermal conductivity so that heat generated by the first heat source passes through the thermal interface layer and to the plate. A thermal barrier layer is contactingly disposed between the plate and the second heat source to mechanically support the plate relative to the second heat source. The thermal barrier layer has a relatively lower thermal conductivity to thermally isolate the conductive plate from the second heat source.
