Abstract: A storage device is described that detects a data error and then notifies a distributed file system, for example, of such error. A data recovery can then be initiated in many ways, one way by the storage device.
Abstract: An apparatus having a circuit is disclosed. The circuit may be configured to (i) generate a sequence of hash values in a table from a stream of data values with repetitive values, (ii) find two consecutive ones of the hash values in the sequence that have a common value and (iii) create a shortened hash chain by generating a pointer in the table at an intermediate location that corresponds to a second of the two consecutive hash values. The pointer generally points forward in the table to an end location that corresponds to a last of the data values in a run of the data values.

Abstract: A plating apparatus includes a vessel and a rack operable to be positioned inside the vessel. The rack includes a number of mandrels including a number of substrate mounting surfaces. The number of mandrels is non-revolving with respect to the rack. The rack further includes a number of gears coupled with the number of mandrels. A partition separates the number of gears from the number of mandrels. A diffuser is positioned below the rack. The diffuser is operable to produce a substantially uniform laminar flow of a fluid from a bottom to a top of the vessel. Thus, the laminar flow may reduce dead zones in the bath and remove defect-causing particles and gases away from the substrate.
Abstract: Management of device firmware update effects as seen by a computing host enables continuously running an OS on the host across a device firmware update, e.g., via delaying visibility of at least a portion of effects of the firmware update, such as in a context where without the delay in visibility the OS would encounter an unrecoverable error and crash. For example, a device (e.g. an SSD) is coupled to a computing host running an unmodified version of Windows. Firmware on the device is updated/activated, such as by being booted. Visibility of a portion of information that would otherwise become immediately visible to the OS (upon activation of updated firmware) is delayed until a power cycle of the device. If the portion includes, e.g., a firmware revision identifier, then the delayed visibility enables continuously running the OS across the firmware update/activation without rebooting the OS.

Abstract: A magnetic element can be configured with a write pole that continuously extends from an air bearing surface along a plane orthogonal to the air bearing surface. A magnetic shield can be separated from the write pole by a first gap distance on the air bearing surface throughout a tip portion of the write pole and by a second gap distance distal the air bearing surface along the plane orthogonal to the air bearing surface along a body portion of the write pole with the first and second gap distances measured parallel to the air bearing surface and the second gap distance being greater than the first gap distance.

Abstract: Technologies are described herein for rewriting the initial sectors of a data track on a recording medium of a storage device in order to reduce the occurrence of initial sector weak writes and/or adjacent track erasure. Upon receiving a write command at the storage device, a plurality of sequential segments on the recording media targeted by the write command is determined. The plurality of sequential segments is written to the recording medium, and then data is rewritten to an initial segment of the plurality of sequential segments.
Abstract: A data writer may be generally configured at least with a write pole that has a pole sidewall and a continuous first taper angle connecting leading and trailing edges. The write pole can be positioned adjacent to a side shield that is configured with first and second shield sidewalls tapered to a shield tip that is the closest point between the write pole and side shield.

Abstract: A data storage device may be constructed as a data reader in various embodiments with a magnetic stack that has a barrier layer disposed between first and second magnetically free layers. The magnetic stack may have a horizontally symmetrical configuration that provides negative exchange coupling between the magnetically free layers.
Abstract: An apparatus comprising a memory and a controller. The memory is configured to process a plurality of read/write operations. The memory comprises a plurality of memory modules. Each memory module has a size less than a total size of the memory. The controller is configured to write user data using a plurality of threshold voltages. The data considered hot-read data is written using a first voltage threshold. The data not considered hot-read data is written using a second voltage threshold. The first voltage threshold reduces an impact on endurance of the memory.
Abstract: A magnetic element may be generally configured with at least a write pole that has leading and trailing regions on an air bearing surface. The leading region may have a trailing width connected to a leading width of the trailing region via a transition feature to form a substantially T-shaped cross-section on the air bearing surface.

Abstract: Described embodiments provide a media controller that processes requests including a logical address and address range. A map of the media controller determines physical addresses of a media associated with the logical address and address range of the request. The map is a multi-level map having a plurality of leaf-level map pages that are stored in the media, with a subset of the leaf-level map pages stored in a map cache. Based on the logical address and address range, it is determined whether a corresponding leaf-level map page is stored in the map cache. If the leaf-level map page is stored in the map cache, a cache index and control indicators of the map cache entry are returned in order to enforce ordering rules that selectively enable access to a corresponding leaf-level map page based on the control indicators and a determined request type.
