Abstract: Feature vectors used in discrimination of images include information on feature blocks of images in an image-document retrieving apparatus of the present invention. Text areas of a page image document are combined to form rectangular images. On the basis of information on the rectangular images that are extracted, a geometric structure of the page is analyzed, the page image document is divided into plural blocks, and then a plurality of feature blocks describing features of the page document image are selected from the plural blocks. The feature vectors are constituted of information on the feature blocks thus selected. This makes it possible to provide an image-document retrieving apparatus and a method of retrieving image documents, by which retrieval of image documents containing mainly text and a graphic is improvable in accuracy.

The alignment layer is subjected to alignment treatment by irradiation of light. UV light can be irradiated in the oblique direction onto the alignment layer through a mask having openings. When the AGC voltage V2 is higher than the AGC voltage V1, a voltage on an anode of the diode becomes high, and the diode 11 is tuned on. Therefore, in the case of an ordinary signal level, the AGC voltages establish a relationship of, and the AGC voltage V2 performs the control. When an excessively large disturbing signal is input, the AGC control unit controls the AGC amplifier to suppress deterioration of performance.

The first conductivity type current block layer has a lattice mismatch rate of ?0.20% or more but not more than 0% relative to the semiconductor substrate. The lattice mismatch rate may be uniform within the current block layer. Alternatively, the lattice mismatch rate may increase continuously or stepwise with an increasing distance from a portion of the second conductivity type second cladding layer other than the ridge.
