  • Patent number: 5709119
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for the controlled formation of loops of rolling stock between two roll stands, particularly in the finishing or intermediate trains of small and medium iron trains. In the method, the rolling stock emerging from the roll stand is allowed to drop as a result of gravity, the front end of the rolling stock is then deflected in the direction of the subsequent roll stand and the rolling stock is temporarily supported during the deflection phase until the front end of the rolling stock has entered the subsequent stand and the loop control unit stabilizes the loop. The arrangement for carrying out the above-described method includes a support and guide member for at least the rear roll stand of two roll stands. • Patent number: 5709261
Abstract: A billet guiding unit of a continuous casting plant for thin slabs includes guide rolls supported on oppositely located frames, wherein the frames are tensioned relative to each other against stop surfaces by means of tension rods. Hydraulic cylinders for extending or stretching the tension rods are mounted between corresponding stop surfaces of the frames. The distance between oppositely located rows of rolls of the frames are corrected by determining a lower deviation side of the slab by carrying out a continuous measurement of the thickness of the slab sides, by determining from the difference of the dimensions the required extension of the tension rods on the lower deviation side and by applying to the hydraulic cylinders the pressure required for the extension of the tension rods.

  • Patent number: 5697244
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for rolling strip with axially displaceable rolls, particularly wear-resistant rolls. Rolls with increased diameter end portions are used. The rolls are axially displaced relative to each other in such a way that the rolled strip is in contact over the width thereof with the portions of the rolls having the smaller diameter. With increasing temperature of the rolls and, thus, thermal cambering of the rolls, the rolls are displaced in opposite direction relative to each other until areas of the increased diameter end portions are moved over edge areas of the rolled strip.

  • Patent number: 5694799
Abstract: The invention is directed to a hot-rolling process and a hot-rolling mill for metal strips (5) having one or more roll stands with work rolls (1, 2). In order to prevent surface defects on the work rolls (1, 2), a coolant liquid is sprayed on the entry side in a narrow region extending immediately in front of the roll gap exclusively by a series of flat jet nozzles in such a way that their core jets primarily strike the surface of the work rolls or are directed into the roll gap for direct cooling and in that the entering metal strip is acted upon at the same time by the same coolant liquid for protecting the surfaces of the rolls from the radiated heat of the metal strip. The spraying of the coolant liquid is regulated in such a way that the metal strip is cooled only in a very narrow outer zone. In so doing, the temperature at the surface of the work rolls (1, 2) is adjusted in such a way that it lies below the boiling point of the coolant liquid at least immediately in front of the roll gap.

  • Patent number: 5690804
Abstract: A method and a plant for regenerating zinc sulfate electrolyte in steel strip electrogalvanizing processes by precipitating dissolved iron from electrolyte circulating through a coating cell. A partial quantity of the circulating electrolyte to be regenerated is removed from the coating cell and the dissolved iron is oxidized to Fe.sup.3+ by a redox-controlled addition of oxidizing agents. Subsequently, by raising the pH value to the precipitation limit of Fe.sup.3+ by a controlled addition of a ZnO/water suspension or a ZnCO.sub.3 /water suspension, the dissolved iron is precipitated as sludge. Any excess ZnO or ZnCO.sub.3 is then dissolved by adding fresh electrolyte. The precipitated iron sludge is conducted through a suitable filter such as a filter press, a filter belt, a decanter, etc., and the precipitated iron is filtered out in this manner. Subsequently, the purified partial quantity of the electrolyte is returned to the coating cell.
