Controlling reverse-direction neighbor reports based on the characteristics of queued bearer traffic
Patent number: 9307458Abstract: A wireless communication device (WCD) may determine that the WCD has bearer traffic queued for transmission to a radio access network (RAN). The WCD may be configured to transmit the bearer traffic and neighbor reports over a reverse-direction channel of the RAN. The neighbor reports may contain information related to wireless coverage areas. One or more characteristics of the bearer traffic may also be determined. Based on the one or more characteristics of the bearer traffic, the neighbor reports may be scheduled to be transmitted over the reverse-direction channel at a particular rate. The WCD may transmit the neighbor reports over the reverse-direction channel at the particular rate.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2014Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Siddharth S. Patent number: 9307075Abstract: A first communication device receives a communication from a second communication device. The communication could be part of the signaling used to establish a call to the second communication device or an audio signal that the second communication device conveys after its user has answered the call and started speaking. Based on the communication from the second communication device, the first communication device provides a user-discernible indication regarding the environment in which the second communication device is being used, such as an indication that the second communication device is being used with a speakerphone. If the second communication device is being used in a vehicle, the first communication device may also provide a user-discernible indication regarding the operational status of the vehicle, such as whether the vehicle is in motion and/or the number of occupants in the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2014Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Simon Youngs, Gary Koller, Piyush Jethwa, Mark Peden

Patent number: 9307455Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for transitioning an active communication session of a mobile station from being conducted over a communication path that includes a source base station to being conducted over a communication path that includes a target base station, without terminating the communication session. A wireless communication device situated within a source coverage area of a source base station operates as a clone of the mobile station that is situated within a source coverage area of the source base station and also within a target coverage area of the target base station. The transition involves the clone relaying the communication session between the source base station and the mobile station; meanwhile, the target base station (i) establishes an air-interface connection with the mobile station and (ii) detects a handoff-completion trigger, and responsively serves the mobile station over the air-interface connection with respect to the communication session.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2010Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventor: Srikanth Pulugurta

Patent number: 9300587Abstract: A first number of wireless devices in communication with an access node over a first frequency band is determined. A total bandwidth and a spectral efficiency of the first frequency band are determined, and a throughput provided to each of the first number of wireless devices in the communication between the access node and the first number of wireless devices is calculated. Based on the total bandwidth of the first frequency band, the spectral efficiency of the first frequency band, and the throughput provided to each of the first number of wireless devices, a second number of wireless devices permitted to communicate with the access node over the first frequency band is determined. Patent number: 9288728Abstract: Embodiments are described that may help to provide wireless service in a circuit-switched fall back scenario. In particular, when a user entity (UE) falls back from a first network to a second network to conduct a voice call, the first network may instruct the UE to scan a certain predetermined channel or channels for coverage from the second network. However, certain types of base stations typically operate on unlisted channels that differ from the predetermined channels that the UE is instructed to scan. Accordingly, a UE may pre-emptively scan unlisted channels, and report any unlisted channel that is detected to the first network. The first network can then coordinate with the second network to re-provision the base station that was operating on an unlisted channel, to instead operate on one of the predetermined channels that a UE will be instructed to scan during fall back to the second network.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2013Date of Patent: March 15, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Ryan S. Patent number: 9288710Abstract: A wireless communication device (WCD) stores a mapping that maps each of a plurality of ranges of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) to a respective data rate indicator in a plurality of data rate indicators. Each data rate indicator is associated with a respective modulation-and-coding scheme (MCS) that supports a respective downlink data rate from a radio access network (RAN). The WCD selects a maximum data rate indicator based on a type of application on the WCD that is to receive downlink data, a priority of downlink data to be received by the application, an amount of downlink data to be received by the application, a device type of the WCD, or a subscription level of the WCD. The WCD selects an applicable data rate indicator based on a measured SNR and the mapping, such that the applicable data rate indicator does not exceed the maximum data rate indicator.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2012Date of Patent: March 15, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Rajveen Narendran, Ryan S.
